OTTO PASSOYV, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
PETROLEUM-LAMP BURNER.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,793, dated November 11, 188
Application filed August 20, 1883. (No model.)
T0 to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Orro PASSOW, of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Petroleum-Lamp Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tolamp-burners in which an integral cylindrical main wick is used in connection with auxiliary suctionwicks.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved burner applied to a lamp suspended from the ceiling. Fig. 2 shows a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse section of the burner, taken on a plane at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 represents a vertical central section of the burner applied to an ordinary lamp. Fig. 5 shows a horizontal section on line so :0, Fig. 4,- and Fig. 6 represents a detail view, on alarger scale, of the burner shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate the corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents an interior cylindrical air-tube, which is open at the top and bottom to facilitate the passage'of air to the flame. A wick-tube, A, is raised or lowered by means of a rack-bar, c, that is attached to the same, and engaged by a pinion, c. The shaft 0 of the pinion c has its bearings in the casing of the burner, and is provided at its outer end with a toothed head, 0 At the lower part of the wick-tube A are arranged, at proper distance from the tube A, wick-clamps a, through which auxiliary suction-wicks a are drawn and retained thereby on the wicktube A. These suction-wicks extend into the oil-receptacle below and serve to conduct the oil to a seamless cylindrical main wick, D, that is placed over the wick-tube A and held at its lower end in contact with the overlapping ends of the suctionwieks. The body of the main wick D extends above the wick-tube, and is moved by the same, together with the suctionwicks, along the guide-tube A,so as to be raised above the upper edge of the same for lighting the burner, or below the same for extinguishing it. The intimate contact of the main and suction wicks is secured by a fixed guide-tube, 1), whereby a ready conduction of the oil to the main wick is secured. The guide-tube?) is provided at its lower part with an outwardly-extending circumferential flange, b, which is placed against a shoulder of the threaded collar b of the oil-receptacle E, and secured there- 'in by the exterior burnertube, A, which is screwed by its threaded lower end into the collar If. The exterior burner-tube, A, is bent inwardly at its upper end, the flange thus formed preventing the suction-wicks from being raised above the upper end of the air-tube A and burned by the flame. WVhenever a new main wick is to be inserted, the exterior burner-tube A is unscrewed and removed with the guidetube .b. A-cylindrical wick is placed over the wick-tube. The guidetube b and exterior burner-tube A' are then placed in position again, whereby the suction-wicks are pressed against the main wick and held in contact therewith.
My improved burner can be applied to sus= pension-lamps and ordinary lamps. In the former case air is admitted to the main wick through the interior air-tube, A, which is pro vided at its upper end with a deflecting-disk, 6, supported on a shank, c, that is applied to the center of a cylindrical guide-piece, e having radial arms. The suction wicks are in-- closed in an annular casing, B, which communicates with the oil-receptacle E by means of openings 1; 12, arranged at the lower part of the outer wall of the casing 13, while the lower part of the guidetube A constitutes theinner wall.
For burners used in connection with ordinary tablevor bracket lamps the guide-tubeA is closed at its lower end, not extended below the neck of the oil-fount, while air is admitted to the interior of the air-tubethrough screened side openings, 9 g, which are arranged in the exterior burner-tube, and communicate with side openings 9' g g of the guide and wick tubes, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The advantage of myinvention is that round burners of simple and effective construction, with a seamless main wick,.are furnished to be used in place of the flat-wick burners. The main wick can be readily replaced when used up, while the suction-wicks always remain in the burner. An even and steady flame is thereby obtained, and thereby a more general introduction of round wick-burners for suspension, wall, and table lamps rendered possible.
I am aware that a lamp has heretofore been made having a stationary air-tube and ashort wick-holder, to which a tubular wick and auxiliary wick-feeders are attached, said wick being mainly in direct contact with the air-tube, and said wick-holder being raised or lowered by a complicated mechanism, which action causes the wick to slide on the air-tube.
I am also aware that a lamp-burner has heretofore been made having a fixed central air-tube and a tubular wick in direct contact therewith, fed by auxiliary wicks, said tubular wick being raised and lowered on the air-tube by a spur-wheel in direct contact with the wick.
The advantages of my invention are that a more positive, regular, and even movement of the wick is secured and the mechanism for adjusting the wick greatly simplified, this beiug accomplishedlmainly by the use of an in dependent wick-tube, to which the main and feed wicks are attached without contact with the air-tube, said wick-tube being adapted to slide on the air-tube, and being provided with a rack, with whichfa pinion engages.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, substantially as set forth, of an interior air-tube, a wick-tube movable on said air-tube and adapted to carry a cylindrical main wick, said wicktube being to, and also with external wick-clamps adapted to hold suction-wicks which overlap the main wick, and a stationary guide-tube adapted to surround the wick-tube. v
3. The combination, substantially as set forth, of an interior air-tube,awick-tube movable on said air-tube and adapted to carry a cylindrical main wick, said wick-tube being provided with external wick-clamps adapted to hold suction-wicks which overlap the main wick, a stationary guide-tube adapted to surround the wick-tube, means for raising and lowering said wick tube, and an exterior burner-tube having an inwardly-bent guardflange at its upper end.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. OTTO PASSOW.
