This invention relates to one-sided separable fasteners, wherein the scoops of each stringer are disposed solely on one surface of the stringer tape and attached to the bead of the tape. More particularly, the invention deals with atop stop for checking movement of the usual slider against displacement from the stringer tapes.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a top stop structure, generally horseshoe-shaped in cross-sectional form, wherein the side walls terminate in roughened or tooth-like edges and the arched wall of the stop includes a projecting stop element engaged by the conventional slider in limiting movement of the slider along the stringers.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of one corner portion of the top stop end of a separable fastener stringer illustrating one of the top stops in position thereon.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view through a formed top stop, preparatory for attachment to the bead of a fastener stringer, the section being on the line 22 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 3 is an edge view of the top stop, as seen in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a section substantially on the line 4-4 of FIG. 1, showing the top stop as formed around the bead and upon the taps in securely anchoring the top stop in position, the top stop being shown in end elevation; and
FIG. 5 is a view, similar to FIG. 2, showing a modified form of construction.
My present invention deals with What I term one-sided separable fasteners, wherein each stringer has the scoops thereof disposed on one surface only of the stringer tape. By way of illustration, the fastener can be of the type and kind disclosed in my prior application Serial Number 107,737, filed April 211, 1961, now Patent No. 3,044,475.
In FIG. 1 of the drawing, 1 have shown, in perspective, a diagrammatic illustration of one upper corner portion of a stringer tape at 10, the bead of which is indicated at 11. The head 11 is spaced inwardly from the outer edge 21 of the tape. Attached to the bead are longitudinally spaced scoops 12, the upper end scoop being spaced from the tape end '13 to provide a space for attachment of one of my improved end stops 14 therewith. Each scoop has a mounting end portion 22 with an inner end 23 and a top surface 24.
Preparatory to attachment of the end stop to the stringer tape, the end stop is first formed, in any suitable manner, to the contour illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawing with the side walls 15 in substantial parallel relationship to each other and joined by the arched portion 16. The
side walls 15 and the arched portion 16 may be called the body portion of the stop. The edges of the walls 15 are roughened and, in the construction shown, this roughening is in the form of longitudinally spaced teeth, as clearly seen at 17 in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The roughened edges may be defined as gripper edges.
In FIGS. 1 to 4, inclusive, the arched portion 16, has, at one end, an outwardly projecting flange 18 forming the projecting stop element of the end stop, which element checks movement of the slider along the stringers of the separable fastener, as with other devices of this type and kind.
In attachment of the end stop with the stringer 10, the stop, as shown in FIG. 3, is placed over the bead -11 of the tape 10 and the side walls are then forced inwardly toward each other by suitable tools, converting the body portion of the end stop into what can be termed a horseshoe-shaped cross-sectional contour, as illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawing. In this operation, the pronged ends of the Walls 15 are moved toward each other and become embedded in the tape adjacent the bead 11, as clearly illustrated at 19 in FIG. 4 of the drawing, thus establishing a secure attachment of the end stop to the tape, retaining the same against movement longitudinally of the tape bead and, thus, resisting stresses or strains to which the end stop would be subjected in checking movement of the slider along the stringers. After attachment the upper surface 25 of the body portion is either flush with or below the level of the top surfaces 24 of the scoops. In addition, the inner surface 26 of the arched portion is either flush with or closer to the bead than the inner ends 23 of the scoops. Thus the body portion is adapted to partially enter the slider channels which are designed to accept the scoops.
In FIG. 5 of the drawing, 1 have shown at -14' a modified form of top stop 15' illustrating one of the side walls having the prongs 17' at the lower edge thereof. The arched portion 16, instead of having the flange stop end 18, is pressed outwardly intermediate ends of the end stop to form a projecting stop element 20, as clearly illustrated. It will be noted that the end stop 14' will be attached to the bead of the stringer tape, similar to attachment of the stop 14, as illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawing. The structure of FIG. 5 lends itself to better hopper feed, as there is no need to orient the same. In other words, it makes no difference how the stop is delivered from the hopper, as both ends are of the same structural contour.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An end stop for use in a separable fastener stringer of the type comprising a tape, an outer edge on the tape, a scoop support surface on the tape, a bead fastened to the scoop support surface and projecting outwardly therefrom, the axis of said bead being parallel to the outer edge and said bead being spaced inwardly from said outer edge, and a plurality of scoops, each scoop having a mounting end portion surrounding and clasping the bead, said end stop comprising a body portion of arcuate cross section clasping the bead, toothed gripper edges on the body portion embedded in the tape adjacent the bead where the bead and tape are fastened together, said gripper edges preventing motion of the end stop along the bead, the upper surface of said body portion lying below the plane of the top surfaces of the scoop and the inner surface of said body portion lying Within the plane of the inner ends of the scoops said body portion being thereby adapted for partial entrance into a scoop receiving channel on a slider, and an outwardly projecting means on the stop projecting above the plane of the top surface of the scoops for preventing passage of a slider over the stop.
2. The stop of claim 1 in which the outwardly projecting means is a turned up flange at one end of the body portion.
3. The stop of claim 1 in which the outwardly projecting means is a bulge in the wall of the body means intermediate the ends thereof, said stop being symmetrical about a plane perpendicular to the axis of the bead and halfway between the ends of the stop.

Claims (1)

1. AN END STOP FOR USE IN A SEPARABLE FASTENER STRINGER OF THE TYPE COMPRISING A TAPE, AN OUTER EDGE ON THE TAPE, A SCOOP SUPPORT SURFACE ON THE TAPE, A BEAD FASTENED TO THE SCOOP SUPPORT SURFACE AND PROJECTING OUTWARDLY THEREFROM, THE AXIS OF SAID BEAD BEING PARALLEL TO THE OUTER EDGE AND SAID BEAD BEING SPACED INWARDLY FROM SAID OUTER EDGE, AND A PLURALITY OF SCOOPS, EACH SCOOP HAVING A MOUNTING END PORTION SURROUNDING AND CLASPING THE BEAD, SAID END STOP COMPRISING A BODY PORTION OF ARCUATE CROSS SECTION CLASPING THE BEAD, TOOTHED GRIPPER EDGES ON THE BODY PORTION EMBEDDED IN THE TAPE ADJACENT THE BEAD WHERE THE BEAD AND TAPE ARE FASTENED TOGETHER, SAID GRIPPER EDGES PREVENTING MOTION OF THE END STOP ALONG THE BEAD, THE UPPER SURFACE OF SAID BODY PORTION LYING BELOW THE PLANE OF THE TOP SURFACES OF THE SCOOP AND THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID BODY PORTION LYING WITHIN THE PLANE OF THE INNER ENDS OF THE SCOOPS SAID BODY PORTION BEING THEREBY ADAPTED FOR PARTIAL ENTRANCE INTO A SCOOP RECEIVING CHANNEL ON A SLIDER, AND AN OUTWARDLY PROJECTING MEANS ON THE STOP PROJECTING ABOVE THE PLANE OF THE TOP SURFACE OF THE SCOOPS FOR PREVENTING PASSAGE OF A SLIDER OVER THE STOP.
