Description
Dec. 4, 1962 P. SCHLUMBOHM ROOM AIR CONDITIONER Filed March 23, 1961 JIM Patented Dec. 4, 1962 Fire 3,066,498 ROOM AIR CONDITEUNER Peter Schiurnhohm, 41 Murray St, New York 7, N.Y. Filed Mar. 23, 1961, Ser. No. 97,949 1 (Iiaim. (Cl. 62-4569) The invention refers to a room air conditioner. More specifically, the invention refers to an air conditioner which uses the evaporative cooling effect of water.
In my Patents #2,909,909 and #2,.973,829 I have shown how such an evaporative effect can be increased beyond the ordinary wet-bulb-thermometer efiect by evaporating the water in a zone of pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure.
The present invention refers to apparatus in which this increased effect can be applied to a room air conditioner without adding the vapor of the evaporated water to the air of the room. The vapors are ejected into the outside air, and the cooling effect of the evaporation is transferred to the room air indirectly, for instance by means of a metallic Wall. A separate fan circulates room air over that metallic wall.
The invention is shown, by way of example, in the FIGURE of the accompanying drawings.
The figure is a side view of a casing mounted against the inside of a wall of the room. The casing contains the air conditioning means, which are shown in view. The casing with its partitioning walls are shown in vertical cross section.
The casing 1 has a bottom wall 2, a rear wall 3, a front wall-screen d, a top wall 5 and sidewalls, of which only one, 6, is shown. With its rear Wall it is mounted against the wall 7.
A partition Wall 8 divides the interior of the easing into the humid rear zone and the dry zone in front of the wall 8. The center of this Wall 8 is a metal plate 9. This plate 9 is with its rear surface in heat exchange contact with a porous plate 10. This plate It is kept wet by conventional means, such as a water circulating system, including a pump 11, a feeding tube 12, a distributor plate 13, a drip guide 14, 15, a water supply sump 16 and a water intake tube 17 leading from the sump to the pump 11.
In front of the wet plate a centrifugal fan 18, driven by a motor 19, rotates. As described in my patents cited above, this reduces the pressure over the surface of plate 10. The water evaporates and its vapors join the air which is moved by the fan. As indicated by arrows, such air enters from the outside through tube 20 into the humid section of the apparatus. Through an opening 22 in a partition wall 21 the air enters axially into the fan 18, to be ejected peripherally, leaving the humid section of the apparatus through a tubular duct 23, which leads through the wall 7 to the outside an.
The dry section of the casing is also partitioned by a wall 24- with a central opening 25. Together with the wall 8, these two partition walls 21, :24 form cowls for the two fans 18 and 26 respectively, to collect the air which leaves the fan peripherally. From this collection space, the air then is flowing through ducts 23, 23 to different spaces. The fan 26, driven by its own motor 27, circulates the room air, as indicated by arrows. Entering through the front screen 4 and opening 25 the air enters axially the fan 26 and contacts the cold metal wall 9, to be ejected peripherally into the cowl space and to return through tubular duct 28 into the room.
Contact of the room air with the cold metal plate 9 causes condensation of water on the plate. The condensate is collected by a drip catcher 29, from where it flows through tube 30 into the water supply sump 16.
Having now described the nature of my invention and having given an example of the manner in which it may he performed, I claim as my invention:
A room air conditioner of the type in which the air of a. walled room is cooled by evaporation of water, characterized by a casing having bottom wall, top wall, side wall, rear wall and front wall; said casing being partitioned by a partitioning wall into a front space and into a rear space; said partitioning wall being a metal plate; said front space of the casing having intake and exhaust openings and air moving means for circulating room air through said front space in heat exchange with said metal plate; said rear space having intake and exhaust ducts, which penetrate the wall of the room, and having air moving means for circulating air from the outside of the room through said rear space; said rear space further comprising a water supply and means to circulate water in heat exchange with said metal parti tioning wall; said water circulating means comprising a porous plate adjacent to the partitioning wall, a water pump and a spray-duct directed against the porous plate.
