- This invention relates to a suspended refractory roof and more particularly to such roofs for use in open hearth checker chambers.
- ceramic hangers are suspended from 3 I-beams by means of metal hangers and the refractory tiles or bricks are suspended from the ceramic hangers. Since each hanger suspends only two bricks a great number of these hangers must be used. During replacement of the checker roof many of the ceramic hangers are broken or damaged to such extent that they cannot be reused. Also, the construction is such that the labor cost in replacing the roof is high.

REICH Attorney Unit This invention relates to a suspended refractory roof and more particularly to such roofs for use in open hearth checker chambers. In a common type of roost presently used ceramic hangers are suspended from 3 I-beams by means of metal hangers and the refractory tiles or bricks are suspended from the ceramic hangers. Since each hanger suspends only two bricks a great number of these hangers must be used. During replacement of the checker roof many of the ceramic hangers are broken or damaged to such extent that they cannot be reused. Also, the construction is such that the labor cost in replacing the roof is high.
It is therefore an object of my invention to provide a suspended roof in which .the ceramic hangers are eliminated. v f
This and other objects will be more apparent after referring to the following specication and attached drawings,
in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of the suspended roof of my invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the suspended roof;
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken on the line III-lll of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a hanger used in suspending the 3" I-beams; and
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of a hanger which is suspended from the bottom ilanges of the 3 I-beams.
Referring more particularly to the drawings reference numeral 2 `indicates spaced parallel roof support beams having their ends supported in any suitable manner adjacent the refractory Walls 4 of the checker chamber. A plurality of intermediate beams 6 are suspended from the bottom llanges of the beams 2 by means of beam clamps 8. The beams 6 are the 3 I-beams mentioned above and it will be seen that they extend transversely of the beams 2. A bottom beam 10 (preferably a standard 6 steel beam) is suspended from each of the beams 6 by means of metallic hangers 12. Each of Ithe hangers 12 consists of two standard 4" steel channels connected by a 1/2 bolt. Refractory tiles or bricks 14 and 16 are suspended from the bottom flanges of the beam 10. For this purpose a horizontal recess 18 is provided in the brick 14 adjacent' the top .thereof and a similar recess 20 is provided in the brick 16 with the top of the brick 14 above recess 18 being reduced in width to provide an opening 22 forthe web of the beam 10. An insulation board 24, preferably made of asbestos, is provided in the recesses 18 and 20 Sites Patent ICC When installing the roof the 3" beams 6 are clamped to the lower flanges of the beams 2 by means of the hangers 8. The hangers 12 are slid over the bottom flanges of beams 6 and the beams 10 are slid over the bottom lianges of the hangers 12. The beams 10 are preferably made in 4 lengths for ease of handling. The bricks 14 and 16 are then slid over the bottom anges of the beams 10 and the insulation board 24 is slid into the recesses 18 and 20 beneath the bottom liange of the beam 10 so as to protect the metal of the beams 10 from damage due to heat.
While one embodiment of my invention has been shown and described, it will be apparent that other adaptations and modiiications may be made without departing from the scope `of the following claim.
I claim: l
A flat suspended refractory roof comprising a plurality of bricks supported in a single layer in abutting relationship, spaced parallel anged beams extending in one direction across the roof with Itheir anges generally horizontal, a plurality of intermediate I-beams beneath said rst named beams, means suspending said intermediate I-beams from said first named beams in spaced apart relationship transversely of said first named beams with their iianges substantially horizontal, a plurality of standard steel bottom I-beams, one beneath each intermediate beam, and an articulated connection between each of said intermediate beams and the bottom beam therebeneath, said bottom beam being supported entirely by said articulated connection, each of said plurality of bricks having a generally horizontal recess adjacent the top thereof extending from one vertical side thereof, the opposite vertical side off each brick abutting a vertical side of an adjacent brick, said bricks being arranged in pairs with their recesses facing each other, the bottom iianges of said bottom beams being received in the recesses of each associated pairs of bricks with more than two pairs of bricks being supported by each bottom beam, and insulation in said recesses beneath said bottom flanges of said bottom beams.
