Description

July 24, 1962 .1. A. CINOTTI UNIVERSAL CONCRETE EDGER Filed Sept. 21, 1960 FIG.3.
INVENTOR Julius A. Cino'rti F'G.4. BY
ATTORNEY 3,045,271 UNIVERSAL CONCRETE EDGER lulius A. Cinotti, 78 Erb St, Buffalo, Filed Sept. 21, 1960, Ser. No. 57,458
12 Claims. (Cl. 15---235.8)
The present invention relates to a universal concrete edger, and more particularly to a concrete finishing or edging tool which is readily adapted for either right or left hand use, having a handle which may be rotated relative to the blade of the edger. 3
When concrete is poured, it is finished by troweling to United States Patent give it the desired finish, and inaddition the edges of the concrete work are finished with an edging tool, usually to provide a rounded or arcuate edge to the work. The tools used for this concrete finishing work have heretofore been relatively simple, and there are at the present time few choices of edger construction available to the workmen. Those edgers which are available do not readily permit the edging of the concrete work, with facility, where access to the desired part of the Work is dilficult. This may occur, for example, in corners, and at certain sections of curvings and sidewalks.
The presently known concrete edgers are also deficient in that they are all made for use by right handed workmen, 'and the Workman who is left handed usually has to have certain of these tools specially made.
An object of the present invention is to provide a concrete edger which Will permit and facilitate edging where access to the work is dilficult.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a concrete edger which may be converted to right handed or left handed use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a concrete edger in which the relative positioning of the parts, particularly the handle and the blade, may be readily changed.
Yet another object of the present invention is the provision of a concrete edger which is adapted to be economically manufactured through the utilization of standard equipment and materials.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will be readily understood from the specifications and drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a universal concrete edger in accordance with the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1.
' FIG. 3 is a perspective view, with parts removed, of
another embodiment of a universal concrete edger accordance with the present invention.
FIG. 4- is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like or corresponding numerals are used to designate like or cor-responding parts throughout the several views, there may be seen in FIG. 1 a universal concrete edger 1(1 comprising a blade 11 having a generally planar first portion 12 and a second portion 13 atright angles, thereto. The portion 12 is generally rectangular, and the portion 13 lies along a long side of the portion 12, being joined thereto by an arcuate portion generally designated 14.
Secured at approximatelythe mid-region of the first portion 12 is a mounting plate 16 which is preferably of a generally sector shape. Mounting plate 16 has a plurality of indentations 17 therein, the indentations 17 lying on an arc and being equally distant from a threaded.
post 18. As may be seen in FIG. 2, the threaded post 18 extends upwardly from the mounting plate 16, and two of the indentations 17 of mounting plate 16 lie on a line that extends through the post and generally parallel to 3,045,271 Patented July 24, 1962 the blade section 13. The indentations 17 preferably extend completely through the mounting plate 16.
A handle support member 20 comprises a first leg 21 that lies on top of and adjacent mounting plate 16, and a second leg 22 that is joined to the first leg and extends generally upwardly therefrom. In the free end of leg 21 there is an aperture 23, and in the free end of leg 22 there is an aperture24. As is clearly shown in FIG. 2, the post 18 extends through the aperture 23. The first leg 21 is also provided with a second aperture 25, this aperture overlying and registering with one of the indentations 17 in mounting plate 16.
In general conformity to the handle support member 20 is a detent support member 311 which comprises a first leg 31 which lies adjacent the first leg 21 of handle support member 26 and a second leg 32 which lies adjacent the second leg 22. The first leg 31 of detent support member 30 is provided with apertures 33 and 35 which overlie the apertures 23 and 25 in the leg 21. The second leg 32 is shorter than the second leg 22 of handle support member 21?, and has extending from the upper end there of a third leg 36 having an aperture 37. The third leg 35 partially overlies the first leg 31, and the aperture 37 overlies and is in registry with the aperture 35.
A wing nut 40 is threaded on the post 18, and so serves to removably secure together the blade 11, the mounting plate 16, the first leg 21 of handle support member 20 and the first leg :31 of detent support member 30. Wing nut 411 has a central, threaded nut section 41 and a pair of oppositely extending wings 42, which will be readily seen in FIGS. 1 and 2 to be characterized by having an axial extent that is no greater than that of the nut section 41. There is also provided a lock washer 43 and washer 44.
A detent 50 having a gripping portion 51 and a pin 52 is provided, the pin 52 extending through the apertures 37, 35 and 25 and into one of the indentations 17. A washer 53 is secured adjacent the lower end of pin 52, and a spring 54 extends between this washer and the third leg 36, the spring 54 encircling pin 52', and thereby urges pin 52 downwardly.
Extending through the aperture 24 in handle support member 241 is a bolt 56, and on the bolt 56,is a hollow handle 57, the handle being secured on bolt 56 and to handle support member 20 by a wing nut 58.
The universal concrete edger 10 may be used with the parts in the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and may be used in the usual manner for both readily accessible work and Work which is more difficult of access. If it is desired to change the relative positioning of the parts, there is only required the actions of loosening the Wing nut 40 and then withdrawing the pin 52 of detent 50 from the aperture 17, and then rotating handle 57, handle support member 2d and detent support member 36 about the post 18 until the pin '52 of detent 5t) overlies another-of the indentations 17, and then releasing the detent 50. The Wing nut 40 is then tightened and the new orientation or positioning of the parts is thereby obtained, together with rapidity of change and secureness of the assemblage. In addition, the wing nut 58 may be loosened, the handle 57 slid off bolt 56, and the bolt removed from aperture 24 and reversed. The handle 57 is then again placed on bolt 56 and wing nut 58 tightened to complete the assembly. It will be understood that-by thisconstruction, the handle may be reversed from the position shown in FIG. 2, while the handle support member 20 remains in the position shown therein, so that handle 57 overlies post 18.
Referring now to FIG. 3, there may be seen another embodiment of the present invention, there being shown in FIG. 3 the blade 11 of a concrete edger 611. There may also be seen the mounting plate 16 and the post 18, together with wing nut as. In thisembodiment, the detent support 30 and detent 50 of FIGS. 1 and 2 are not present, and instead there is provided a detent 61 comprising a leg 62 having an aperture 63 at one end, with the post 18 extending therethrough, and at the other end a pin 64 which extends through the aperture 25 in the leg 21 of handle support member 20, and into an indentation 17 of the mounting plate 16.
In this embodiment, by loosening the wing nut 40 the pin 64 of detent 61 may be withdrawn from an indentation 17 and the handle support member 20 and handle 57 (not shown) repositioned as set forth above with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. Thereafter, Wing nut 40 may be retightened, with pin 64 in another one of the indentations 17.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore the invention is not limited to What is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
