"J J. SGHILLINGER.
MACHINE FOR MAKING BUILDING BLOCKS.
No. 293,525. Patented Feb. 12,1884.
WITNESSES: I I V INVENTOR l Q J]; ch'fihkwagf ATTORNEYS machines referred to With a means for perfo- UNITED STATES J OHN J SGHILLINGER,
PATENT OFFICE.
on NEW YORK, N. Y.
' MACHINE FOR MAKING BUILDING-BLOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,525, dated February 12, 1884.
Application f led November 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. SoHILL-INGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Building-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for making building-blocks from a plastic composition, and especially such machines in which the composition is expelled from the hopper bya suitable feed or propellingdevice through a block-forming die.
The object of myinvention is to provide the rating the blocks; and to this end it consists in the arrangement of punches in one or both. sides of the block-forming die, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a plan or top view.
Similar letters indicate-corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the feed-hopper, having a suitable opening, B, in the top, for introducing the proper composition.
B designates the feed device'of thehopper, consisting, in this example, of ascrew; and G, the block-forming die, arranged in proper relation to the screw, for receiving the material expelled from the hopper by its means.
The letters D Din'dicate the punches of the die. In-the present example these punches are arranged in two opposite sides of the die; but it should be understood that one set of the punches may be omitted, as when the blocks are to be perforated only on'one side. Each set of the punches D D extends transversely to the die 0, opposite to suitableholes therein, and each set is supported by a lever, E or E, engaging with a trip-wheel, G, so that when a revolving motion is imparted to this wheel it acts on the levers, and thence on the punches,
per in suitable positions, while, for the purpose of keeping the levers inengagement with the wheel, a suitable spring, .9, or suitable Weights, may be used, and since the. trip- .wheel is common to both levers, the whole constitutes a simple means for operating the punches; but it is evident that other means may be used for this purpose.
The holes formed in the blocks are intended, chiefly, to admit a nail into a wall in which the blocks may be used; and to this end the punches are preferably made of tapering form,
as shown, and to operate alternately, so'that the holes in one side of the block alternate 1n position with those in the other side.
When the blocks are to be hollow, suitable internal dies, 0, are or main die.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, with the hopper, its feed device, and the block-forming die, of the reciprocating punches arranged in the die for perforating. the blocks, and a means for impartingmotion to the punches.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, with the hopper, itsfeed device, and the block-forming die, of the reciprocating punches arrangedin opposite sides of the die, the levers supporting the punches, and the trip-wheel common to both levers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. SOHILLINGEB. [L. s.]
