LoeAN, OHIO, AssIeNoB or oNE-TI-IIBD TO sEwE 'L e. BENNETT, OF sAME BLAoE.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,137, dated February 5, 1884.
' Application filed April 27, 1883. (No model.)
To alt whom, it may concern; V
Be it known that I, DANIEL BENNETT, of Logan, in the county of Hocking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Inlprovement in Fire-Escapes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my fire-escape. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, partlyin section; Fig. 4, exterior View of window with rope ladder in position; Fig. 5, view of ladder-round.
The object of my invention is to provide a fire-escape in convenient form for storing away rope ladder or rope when not in usethatis,
. permanently in its placeand yet is movable and O the base.
A only so far as guide-rod will permit it to move from and to the window along the wall. If away from the window, it can be put to its place in a moment by any one without a light, because it is so constructed that it can only be moved to the right place.
In the accompanying drawings, A is a sectional view of a side of a room; B, the floor, On the base-board near the floor, and at a suitable distance apart, are securely fastened brackets G, of cast, malleable iron, or any other suitable material. One of these brackets is placed beneath the window, so that when the box is moved forward it will rest against the said bracket, and when resting against this bracket it is directly under the window. G is a nut on the end of said.
rod, to hold it firmly in position. Extending between and securely fastened to the brackets G is the rod, guide, or tramway H, of iron or any suitable material. The gibs I, made of cast or strap iron, are fastened on the under side of the box D by means of screws and the bolt J. The bolt J, through the clip I, is provided at its upper end with the eye K. On
the under side of the box farthest from the wall are fastened the rollers or casters F, so
placed as to travel in a parallel line with the face of the wall A. The box D, moving on the rollers F and rod H, has a lid or cover, E, with the flange E around the edgeon its lower side, to fit down over the top of the box, so
that it can be easily removed. Coiled within the box, Fig. 4, with one end fastened to the bolts J, or to the rod H by loops, is a rope ladder, L, one end of which, on the lid being removed, can be thrown out of the window. The ladder is thus always in a convenient po- 5 5 sition for handling, and can be readily and easily manipulated. The rounds of the ropeladder L, Fig. 5, have the central part, M, made as usual, but with the ends enlarged, and
a groove, N, out in its face to receive and fasten the side ropes. By having enlarged ends to the rounds the central part of the round will not rest against the building, so that the feet can be placed on the round without coming in contact with the building, and the hand can more readily grasp the same.
In case of fire the box is pushed in front of the window, the lid removed, and the rope ladder thrown out when it is ready for use. 3.;
WVhat I claim as new is- W o l. The box D, having on one side, beneath the box, the casters or wheels F, resting on the floor to support said box, and the other side of the box provided with gibs I, so that said box may be moved along the wall on the rod H, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The box D, having on one side, beneath the box, the casters or wheels F, resting on the floor to support said box, and the other side of said box provided with the gibs I, in comhave hereunto set my hand this 24th day of March, 1888, in the presence of witnesses.
