- Figure 14 is a front perspective view of the embodiment shown in Figure 12 with all parts in position save for the skirt assembly portion, one side of which is not attached.
- the slip-cover includes a seat panel 20, an inner back panel 21, left and right shoulder panels 22 and 23, left and right arm panels 24 and 25, left and right front panels 26 and 27, and a skirt portion designated generally as 28; said portions of the slip cover being composed of non-stretchable, nonelastic woven material such as'cretonne or chintz, orthe like. However, if desired, a knitted stretchable material may be used.
- An outer rear back-panel 29 may consist of a stretchable, tensioning or breather panel. composed of elastic or knitted material and concealed behind the back of the furniture piece, but adapted to draw the aforesaid panels closely about the upholstered furniture piece.
- the rear back-panel 29 may consist of a knitted material which has an inherent stretchability and contract ability. Thus, panel 29 can expand or breathe when stresses are exerted on the other panels. Moreover, panel 29 may have knitted into its material, some elastic cords, strands or yarns which increase the effective tensioning qualities of. the back-panel 29. g
- the back-panel 29 may also be a woven fabric with rubber or similar elastic or contractable strands or yarns (such as Lastex yarn) woven into it, at intervals, weft wise, and/or warp-wise; said strands or yarns being disposed horizontally and/ or vertically in the back-panel 29 (or on a bias).
- panel 29 may be composed entirely of an elastic or. rubber-like sheet.
- the rear back-panel or breather panel 29 is shown generally in our Patent 2,286,171. While the material of these breather panels may be knitted of non-elastic yarns it may contain stretchable yarns, as shown in Krasnov Patent 2,429,187.
- Seat panel 20 is fastened along its side edges 30 to,
- a skirt 28 is permanently attached beneath its uppermost cord-welted seam 57 to the center portion 36 of seam 35 of seat panel 20 (see Figure 4). The remainder of the front portion 55 of skirt 28 is detached from the slip-cover.
- the width of the center portion 36 of the seat-panel 20 which is attached to the skirt 2% is the width of the smallest chair-seat on which the slip-cover is tobe mounted.
- a small tab 33 may extend in front of seam 35, and is normally covered by skirt 28, when the latter is in position.
- the front back-panel 21 is fastened, at its upper edge 37 to the stretchable rear back-panel or breather panel 29 along the upper portion of the edge 6! thereof.
- the rear portion of the shoulder panels 22 and 23 are attached to rear back-panel 29 along its edge 60.
- Right arm panel 25 is likewise attached to rear back-panel 29 along its edge 60.
- the left (or right) arm-panel 24 or 25 respectively may be detachably secured to outer backpanel 29 by means of a slide-fastener or Zipper or snapfasteners or the like, which may be used to secure edge 40 of one arm-panel 24 to edge 60 of outer back-panel 29.
- seam-line 42 between right shoulder panel 23 and front back-panel 21 and the seam-line 41 between left shoulder panel 22 and front back-panel 21 are cordwelted seams. Such seams act as stabilizers to hold shoulder panels 22 and 23 in place against the back of the chair.
- Gaps 45 and 46 do not extend to rear back-panel 29, there being a seam 100 between shoulder panel 22 and arm panel 24 and a similarly positioned seam between shoulder panel 23 and arm panel 25.
- Gaps 45 and 46 permit snug fitting adjustment of the back portion and arms of the slip-cover.
- edges 30 and 32 of the seat panel 20 may be tucked into the space between the seat and the arms and back of the chair as is shown in Figure 4.
- the edges 43 and 44 of arm panels 24 and 25 which are generally longer than the exposed surface of the arms of the chair on which the slip-cover is to be mounted can be tucked into the space between the arms of the chair and the back of the chair in order to provide a snug and neat fit.
- the arms of the chair are longer than normal, a greater portion of the arm panel may be let out to provide a snug and neat fitv If the arms of the chair are shorter than normal, a greater amount of the edge portions adjoining edges 43 and 44 of arm panels 24 and 25 can be tucked into the space between the rear of the arms and the back of the chair.
- edge portions 47 and 48 of the shoulder panels 22 and 23, respectively, can also be tucked into the gaps between the arms and the back of the chair to provide a neat fit.
- the inner back-panel 21 and the shoulder panels 22 and 23 smoothly cover the front and side surfaces of the back of the chair.
- gaps 45 and 46 in the slip-cover permit independent adjustment of the arm panels 24 and 25 and of the shoulder panels 22 and 23.
- each of the arm panels 24 and 25, which edge is adapted to be flush with the front edge of the arms of the chair, is provided with a cord-welted seam, namely seams 50 and 51, respectively;
- These cord-welted seams when overlying the front edge of the arms of the chair make for a pleasing appearance, and also serve to guide the user of the slip-cover as to the amount of the material to be tucked into the space between the back of the chair arm and the back of the chair.
- Front panels 26 and 27 are permanently attached to arm panels 24 and 25, respectively, along their outer side beneath cord-welted'seams and 51 at 52 and 53. The remainder of the edge of each of the front panels 26 and 27 is detached from arm panels 24 and 25. Thus, front panels 26 and 27 may be inserted under arm panels 24 and 25 to provide a smooth fit over the front surface of the arms of the chair, with the free edges of the front panels 26 and 27 concealed beneath arm panels 24 and 25. This permits a neat fit to be achieved.
- the skirt 28, comprises a pleated portion 34 and an upper unpleated band 54 separated by a cord-welted seam 82.
- Skirt 28 includes front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56.
- Front skirt portion 55 is, as heretofore noted, permanently attached to the slip-cover only at the central portion 36 of seam 35 of seat panel 20 (see Figure 4), with the remainder of front skirt portion 55 having a detached cord-welted upper edge 57.
- Rear skirt portion 56 is permanently attached along cordwelted seam 58 to the rear portion of the slip-cover, namely, the rear portion of arm panels 24 and 25 and rear-back panel 29.
- the front skirt portion 55 is provided with a plurality of hook means 59 which project beyond its side edges 61 and permit gripping attachment to rear skirt assembly portion 56 (see Figures 1 and 2).
- each of the hook means 59 is attached to front skirt assembly portion 55 by means of a metallic snap-grommet or snap-fastener socket 62 which is secured there to.
- Pronged hook members 63 are detachably secured to grommets 62 by the insertion of a mating head on such hook members into the socket of the grommet 62. The pronged or hooked ends of hook member 63 are then hooked into the fabric of rear skirt portion 56.
- hook means 59 permits the taking up of slack between front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56, and thereby permits a snug continuousappearing arrangement of front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56 to be achieved with the bottom of the slip-cover pulled about the furniture piece.
- elastic tie string or anchorage 65 is permanently anchored at 66 adjacent the front inner corner of left arm panel 24 and is provided with a snap-fastener element 67 adapted to mate with a snap-fastener element 67 on the outside front corner of arm panel 24 or with hook means.
- Elastic tie string or anchorage 68 is permanently anchored adjacent the front inner corner of right arm panel 25 at 69' and carries a snap-fastener element 105 at its free end adapted to mate with a snap-fastener element on the outside front corner of arm panel 25.
- Elastic tie strings 65 and 68 are slipped over the left and right forward legs of the chair in the manner shown in Figures 4 and 5 and serve to anchor the front portion of the slip-cover to the chair.
- the rear portion of the slip-cover is provided with tie string 70 which is connected to the lower right and left hand portions of rear back-panel 29, and, for example, may pass through a tunnel or tube on the underside of rear back-panel 29.
- Tie string 70 is slipped around the rear back legs ofthe club chair passed through a loop depending from the center portion of the'tunnel or tube in rear back-panel 29, as shown in Figure 6 and the free ends thereof tied together tautlyso as to provide a down- Ward pull on rear back-panel 29.
- a slide-fastener or zipper 71 is used to connect the free edge of each of the front panels 26 and 27 with the adjacent free edge of respective arm panels 24 and 25.
- Zipper 71 is anchored at the top of the juncture 53 between front panel 27 and arm panel 25 (while only the right arm panel 25 and right front panel 27 are shown in Figures 9 and 10, it is, of course, to be understood that in this embodiment of the present invention, a similar slide-fastener may be similarly mounted on left arm and tucks the excess portion of front panel 27 beneatharm panel 25, with slide-fastener 71 beneath the overlying cord-welted seam 51 and the adjacent portion of arm panel 25, so that the closed slide-fastener 71 is hidden from view.
- the use of slide-fastener 71 permits more secure anchoring of front panel 27 beneath arm panel 25 to be achieved.
- the skirt instead of comprising a front skirt portion and a rear skirt portion comprises a unitary skirt 81 having an upper unpleated band portion 54a and a pleated portion 34a with an uppermost cordwelted seam 57a, and a cord-welted seam 82a separating the upper unpleated band portion 54a and the pleated portion 34a.
- Skirt 81 is not permanently secured to the seat panel but, instead, is detachably secured to seat panel 20a by means of a mating snap fastener or similar fastener 83, one element of which is positioned on the center front portion of seat panel 20a and the other on the center portion of a skirt-securing portion 84.
- Skirt-securing portion 84 is a three-sided box-like seatencasing member and includes a generally rectangular upper panel 85, which is secured at 87 along its forward edge 86 to the band portion 54a by means of cord-welted seam 57a.
- the region of attachment 87 is generally the same length as the width of the smallest chair-seat to which the slip-cover is to be applied.
- the box-like end portions 88 which protrude beyond the region of attachment 87 are not secured to the cord-welted seam 57a.
- Seat panel 20a need not extend over the front of the chair but instead its forward edge 89 may be somewhat short of the front end of the chair.
- skirt-securing portion 84 When the skirt-securing portion 84 is engaged by means of snap-fastener 83 to seat panel 2011 with its sides tucked in between the side edges of the seat and the adjacent arms of the chair, as shown in Figure 14, the remainder of skirt 81 is secured to the slip-cover in the following manner.
- skirt 81 are provided with hook means 90 in band 54a, each of which hook means 90 is similar to the hook and grommet arrangement shown in Figure 11.
- Hook means 90 may be used to secure the side portions of skirt 81 in a neat hugging fit to arm panels, 24 and 25, the point of engagement of the hook prongs being so adjusted as to compensate for variations in the chair size.
- the detached ends 92 of skirt .81 are also provided with hook means.91 which can be secured to back-panel 29.
- the skirt 81 may be overlapped at the rear of the chair, as in the case of a small chair, with one of the sets of hook means 91 inserted into the overlapped portionof skirt 81.
- skirt-securing portion 84 of the fully detachable skirt 81 to the seat panel 20a as in Figures 12 to.14
- the full-sized seat-portion would be laid over the seat of the chair or sofa, with its edge tucked in between the seat and the arms and between the seat and the back of the chair or sofa, thereby to hold it in place, and the inner portions of the arm panels and the front panel of the back of the slip-cover would be likewise tucked in.
- This latter form of construction would be similar to that shown in Figures 12 to 14, but the skirt-securing portion 84 would extend all the way back and would be of sufiicient width to permit it to be tucked in on the sides as well.

Referring to the embodiment of the present invention shown in Figures 1 through 8, inclusive, the slip-cover includes a seat panel 20, an inner back panel 21, left and right shoulder panels 22 and 23, left and right arm panels 24 and 25, left and right front panels 26 and 27, and a skirt portion designated generally as 28; said portions of the slip cover being composed of non-stretchable, nonelastic woven material such as'cretonne or chintz, orthe like. However, if desired, a knitted stretchable material may be used.
An outer rear back-panel 29 may consist of a stretchable, tensioning or breather panel. composed of elastic or knitted material and concealed behind the back of the furniture piece, but adapted to draw the aforesaid panels closely about the upholstered furniture piece.
The rear back-panel 29 may consist of a knitted material which has an inherent stretchability and contract ability. Thus, panel 29 can expand or breathe when stresses are exerted on the other panels. Moreover, panel 29 may have knitted into its material, some elastic cords, strands or yarns which increase the effective tensioning qualities of. the back-panel 29. g
The back-panel 29 may also be a woven fabric with rubber or similar elastic or contractable strands or yarns (such as Lastex yarn) woven into it, at intervals, weft wise, and/or warp-wise; said strands or yarns being disposed horizontally and/ or vertically in the back-panel 29 (or on a bias). Likewise, panel 29 may be composed entirely of an elastic or. rubber-like sheet.
The rear back-panel or breather panel 29 is shown generally in our Patent 2,286,171. While the material of these breather panels may be knitted of non-elastic yarns it may contain stretchable yarns, as shown in Krasnov Patent 2,429,187.
3 arm panels 25 and 24, and at its rear edge 32 to front back-panel 21.
A skirt 28 is permanently attached beneath its uppermost cord-welted seam 57 to the center portion 36 of seam 35 of seat panel 20 (see Figure 4). The remainder of the front portion 55 of skirt 28 is detached from the slip-cover. The width of the center portion 36 of the seat-panel 20 which is attached to the skirt 2% is the width of the smallest chair-seat on which the slip-cover is tobe mounted.
A small tab 33 may extend in front of seam 35, and is normally covered by skirt 28, when the latter is in position.
The front back-panel 21 is fastened, at its upper edge 37 to the stretchable rear back-panel or breather panel 29 along the upper portion of the edge 6!) thereof. In like manner, the rear portion of the shoulder panels 22 and 23 are attached to rear back-panel 29 along its edge 60. Right arm panel 25 is likewise attached to rear back-panel 29 along its edge 60. However, as shown in Figures and 6, the left (or right) arm- panel 24 or 25 respectively may be detachably secured to outer backpanel 29 by means of a slide-fastener or Zipper or snapfasteners or the like, which may be used to secure edge 40 of one arm-panel 24 to edge 60 of outer back-panel 29.
The seam-line 42 between right shoulder panel 23 and front back-panel 21 and the seam-line 41 between left shoulder panel 22 and front back-panel 21 are cordwelted seams. Such seams act as stabilizers to hold shoulder panels 22 and 23 in place against the back of the chair.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5 the rear portions 43 and 44 of the inner part of the arm panels 24 and 25, respectively, are not attached to the shoulder panels 22 and 23, but have a hemmed detached edge. Shoulder panels 22 and 23 are provided with free hemmed edges 47 and 48.
This provides a gap 45 between the left arm panel 24 and left shoulder panel 23.
The edge portions 47 and 48 of the shoulder panels 22 and 23, respectively, can also be tucked into the gaps between the arms and the back of the chair to provide a neat fit. Thus, the inner back-panel 21 and the shoulder panels 22 and 23 smoothly cover the front and side surfaces of the back of the chair.
Thus, gaps 45 and 46 in the slip-cover permit independent adjustment of the arm panels 24 and 25 and of the shoulder panels 22 and 23.
The front edge of each of the arm panels 24 and 25, which edge is adapted to be flush with the front edge of the arms of the chair, is provided with a cord-welted seam, namely seams 50 and 51, respectively; These cord-welted seams when overlying the front edge of the arms of the chair make for a pleasing appearance, and also serve to guide the user of the slip-cover as to the amount of the material to be tucked into the space between the back of the chair arm and the back of the chair.
The skirt 28, comprises a pleated portion 34 and an upper unpleated band 54 separated by a cord-welted seam 82. Skirt 28 includes front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56. Front skirt portion 55 is, as heretofore noted, permanently attached to the slip-cover only at the central portion 36 of seam 35 of seat panel 20 (see Figure 4), with the remainder of front skirt portion 55 having a detached cord-welted upper edge 57. Rear skirt portion 56 is permanently attached along cordwelted seam 58 to the rear portion of the slip-cover, namely, the rear portion of arm panels 24 and 25 and rear-back panel 29.
The front skirt portion 55 is provided with a plurality of hook means 59 which project beyond its side edges 61 and permit gripping attachment to rear skirt assembly portion 56 (see Figures 1 and 2). As shown in Figure 11, each of the hook means 59 is attached to front skirt assembly portion 55 by means of a metallic snap-grommet or snap-fastener socket 62 which is secured there to. Pronged hook members 63 are detachably secured to grommets 62 by the insertion of a mating head on such hook members into the socket of the grommet 62. The pronged or hooked ends of hook member 63 are then hooked into the fabric of rear skirt portion 56.
By having front skirt portion 55 overlap a portion of rear skirt portion 56, hook means 59 permits the taking up of slack between front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56, and thereby permits a snug continuousappearing arrangement of front skirt portion 55 and rear skirt portion 56 to be achieved with the bottom of the slip-cover pulled about the furniture piece.
The anchoring of the' slip-cover tothe chair is achieved by means of elastic or pull ties. Thus, elastic tie string or anchorage 65 is permanently anchored at 66 adjacent the front inner corner of left arm panel 24 and is provided with a snap-fastener element 67 adapted to mate with a snap-fastener element 67 on the outside front corner of arm panel 24 or with hook means. Elastic tie string or anchorage 68 is permanently anchored adjacent the front inner corner of right arm panel 25 at 69' and carries a snap-fastener element 105 at its free end adapted to mate with a snap-fastener element on the outside front corner of arm panel 25. Elastic tie strings 65 and 68 are slipped over the left and right forward legs of the chair in the manner shown in Figures 4 and 5 and serve to anchor the front portion of the slip-cover to the chair.
The rear portion of the slip-cover is provided with tie string 70 which is connected to the lower right and left hand portions of rear back-panel 29, and, for example, may pass through a tunnel or tube on the underside of rear back-panel 29. Tie string 70 is slipped around the rear back legs ofthe club chair passed through a loop depending from the center portion of the'tunnel or tube in rear back-panel 29, as shown in Figure 6 and the free ends thereof tied together tautlyso as to provide a down- Ward pull on rear back-panel 29.
The club hai'r shown in'the drawings is preview with" a seat cushion which may be slip covered of the same material used to form the slip cover of the present invention. Such cushion 16 is placed above seat panel 20. A preferred form of cushion slip cover is shown in Figure 3. I
In the modifiedembodiment shown in Figures 9 and 10, a slide-fastener or zipper 71 is used to connect the free edge of each of the front panels 26 and 27 with the adjacent free edge of respective arm panels 24 and 25. Zipper 71 is anchored at the top of the juncture 53 between front panel 27 and arm panel 25 (while only the right arm panel 25 and right front panel 27 are shown in Figures 9 and 10, it is, of course, to be understood that in this embodiment of the present invention, a similar slide-fastener may be similarly mounted on left arm and tucks the excess portion of front panel 27 beneatharm panel 25, with slide-fastener 71 beneath the overlying cord-welted seam 51 and the adjacent portion of arm panel 25, so that the closed slide-fastener 71 is hidden from view. The use of slide-fastener 71 permits more secure anchoring of front panel 27 beneath arm panel 25 to be achieved.
In the embodiment of the present invention shown in Figures 12, 13 and 14, the skirt instead of comprising a front skirt portion and a rear skirt portion comprises a unitary skirt 81 having an upper unpleated band portion 54a and a pleated portion 34a with an uppermost cordwelted seam 57a, and a cord-welted seam 82a separating the upper unpleated band portion 54a and the pleated portion 34a. Skirt 81is not permanently secured to the seat panel but, instead, is detachably secured to seat panel 20a by means of a mating snap fastener or similar fastener 83, one element of which is positioned on the center front portion of seat panel 20a and the other on the center portion of a skirt-securing portion 84.
Skirt-securing portion 84 is a three-sided box-like seatencasing member and includes a generally rectangular upper panel 85, which is secured at 87 along its forward edge 86 to the band portion 54a by means of cord-welted seam 57a. The region of attachment 87 is generally the same length as the width of the smallest chair-seat to which the slip-cover is to be applied. The box-like end portions 88 which protrude beyond the region of attachment 87 are not secured to the cord-welted seam 57a.
Seat panel 20a need not extend over the front of the chair but instead its forward edge 89 may be somewhat short of the front end of the chair.
When the skirt-securing portion 84 is engaged by means of snap-fastener 83 to seat panel 2011 with its sides tucked in between the side edges of the seat and the adjacent arms of the chair, as shown in Figure 14, the remainder of skirt 81 is secured to the slip-cover in the following manner.
The sides of skirt 81 are provided with hook means 90 in band 54a, each of which hook means 90 is similar to the hook and grommet arrangement shown in Figure 11.
Hook means 90 may be used to secure the side portions of skirt 81 in a neat hugging fit to arm panels, 24 and 25, the point of engagement of the hook prongs being so adjusted as to compensate for variations in the chair size. 'The detached ends 92 of skirt .81 are also provided with hook means.91 which can be secured to back-panel 29. The skirt 81 may be overlapped at the rear of the chair, as in the case of a small chair, with one of the sets of hook means 91 inserted into the overlapped portionof skirt 81.
instead of permanently attaching the unpleated band portion of the composite skirt 28 to the seat panel 20 as in Figures 1 to 10, or instead of detachably securing the skirt-securing portion 84 of the fully detachable skirt 81 to the seat panel 20a as in Figures 12 to.14, we may form the skirt with a fully-sized seat-portion secured thereto along its front edge or along the central portion of its front edge,.which full-sized seat-portion would be unattached in relation to the arm portions of the slip-cover and in relation to the front panel of the back of the slipcover. In this embodiment the full-sized seat-portion would be laid over the seat of the chair or sofa, with its edge tucked in between the seat and the arms and between the seat and the back of the chair or sofa, thereby to hold it in place, and the inner portions of the arm panels and the front panel of the back of the slip-cover would be likewise tucked in. This latter form of construction would be similar to that shown in Figures 12 to 14, but the skirt-securing portion 84 would extend all the way back and would be of sufiicient width to permit it to be tucked in on the sides as well.
In this latter form of construction, we may also extend the so-unattached portions of the band and pleated part of the skirt only around the front and half way or so along the sides in the manner indicated in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 10, with the balance of the skirt being permanently attached to the back and to the sides as in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 10. Thus, in this embodiment the full-sized seat member which would be separable from the arms and back of the slip-cover would carry a skirt not extending fully around the furniture but only along the front and part of the sides.
While the drawings show the slip-cover applied to a clu -type chair, the slip-cover of the present invention may be applied to any upholstered furniture such as club-type sofa, a lawson chair or sofa, a queen chair, a wing chair, a button back chair, a barrel-back chair, etc.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiments be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention. 7
