SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,462, dated May 2'7, 1884. Application filed December 31, 1883. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern} Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Limerick, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bob-Sleigh, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to sleighs, and more particularly to that class known as bobsleighs, and it has for its object, first, to provide a new and improved frame for the reception of a wagon-bodywhich may be placed thereon, whereby the sleigh will be made to accommodate itself to'the unevenness of the ground; second, to provide improved means for connecting the sleighs; and, third, to improve and simplify the construction of sleighs of this class.
The invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described,and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bob-sleigh constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is atransverse section on the line as w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detached'view in perspective of the king-bolt.
A A represent the sled-sections, the same consisting of the sides or runners at a, having dovetailed slots in their upper sides, to receive beams which are dovetailed at their ends, by which means the runners of the sleighs are connected. To the upper sides of these connecting-beams are secured raves a Thus a space is formed between the upper side of the runners and the raves. To the forward end of the sled A; and in the sides of the runners thereof, is pivotally secured a transverse bar, I), which is provided at about its center with a slot to receive the end of a suitable drafttongue, which is secured therein in any suit able manner. Upon the tie-beams of the sled A is secured a strip, 1), which is provided with an opening, 12 directly over the middle tiebeam. The said middle tie-beam is provided on its upper side with a metal facing.
0 represents the king-bolt, which is made spherical at its lower end, and bears upon the upper side of the middle tie-beam and in the opening If of the-strip b. Upon the strip 1) is secured a metal plate, a, which is provided with an opening, 0, of somewhat larger diameter than the end of the king-bolt, to allow of the ready play of the latter. The king-bolt 0 may be made rectangular at itsupper end to receive the end of the reach for connecting the sleds, and to receive the end cross-beam of the supporting-frame, both of which are provided with a rectangular slot to correspond to the upper end of the king-bolt, and will be more fully described hereinafter. Upon the upper sides of the tie-beams of the sled A are secured beams (1. Between these beams d and the sides of the sled are secured strips 61, which are preferably made of metal.
E represents two beams, adapted to slide upon the metal strips d, the said beams being recessed on their under sides to receive rollers, which are adapted to slide upon the metal plates or strips d. These beams E are connected upon their under side by a tie-beam, e, the ends of which project beyond the sides of the beams'E, and slide between the raves and runners of the sled. The beams E are provided at about their center with slots 6 which are adapted to receive the end crossbar of the supporting-frame F. This supporting-frame F is formed of two side rails, which are preferably constructed of hickory or ash, and connected at their ends by cross-beamsf f. The cross-beam f is provided with a slot, which fits over the king-bolt, and it is keyed thereon by means of a transverse pin or bolt. The rear or end cross-beam, f, rests-in the slots e and is provided with openings, through which pass metal plates f the same being secured upon the beams E, by which means the supporting-frame is firmly connected to the end sled.
It will be apparent from the above description that by the construction and arrangement of parts set forth the sleds will adapt themselves to the unevenness of the ground, and thus all jumping of the sleds is avoided.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the sleds A A, the sled A being provided with a strip, 1/,
having an opening, D to receive the end of the king-bolt, and a metal plate, 0, retaining said king-bolt in position, and the sled A be ing provided with beams E, adapted to slide upon plates d, and connected on their under sides by a beam, 0, of a supporting-i'rame, F, the forward end of which is secured to the kingbolt, while the rear end is secured to the beams E, and a reach for connecting the sleds, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the sleds A A, the sled A being provided with a strip, 1), having an opening, 11", to receive the end of the king-bolt, and a metal plate, 0, retaining said king-bolt in position, and the sled A provided with beams E, adapted to slide upon plates (1, said beams being provided upon their under side with rollers, and connected on their under side by a beam, 0, of asupporting-frame, F, the forward end of which is secured to the king-bolt, while the rear end is secured to the beams E, and a reach for connecting the sleds, substantially as set forth.
3. The hereiudescribed bob-sled, consisting of the sleds A A, the sled A being provided with a king-bolt, as described, a reach for connecting the sleds, the same being secured to the king-bolt and to the forward end of the rear sled, the sled A provided with beams E, adapted to slide upon plates (1, and connected upon their under side by a tie-beam, c, a supportingframe, F, connected at its forward end to the king-bolt, and at its rear end to the beams E, substantially as set forth.
