SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,269, dated May 27, 1884.

Be it known that I, MAX RUBIN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has reference to an improved bottle-stopper of that class in which a cap closes the mouth ofthe bottle, said cap being pivoted to a neck-band that is guided in spiral grooves on the neck of the bottle, so as to raise or lower the cap; and the invention consists, of a bottle the neck of which is provided with spiral grooves, and at intermediate points of the latter with vertical grooves, a neck-band guided thereon by projecting pins, and a cap' having an annular iiange and downwardlyextending arms pivoted to said pins, said cap being provided with an interior elastic disk.

C is a ring-shaped neck-band, that is fitted to the cylindrical portion ofthe neck B; and D, a cap, which is provided with an annular ilange, e, and at diametrically-opposite points with dowmrardly-extending arms D', that are pivoted to pins d d of the neck-band C. The pins d d project into the spiral grooves b Z), and are guided in the same, so as to raise or lower the cap I). The cap D is made of suitable sheet metal, the arms D and flange c being made integral therewith. Wh'en the bottlc is to be hermetically closed by the cap, it is provided with an interior disk, D2, of rubber or other elastic material, which disk is (No model.)
when the neck-band is moved along the grooves b b into its lowermost position on the bottleneck. (Showu in Figs. l and 2.) The spiral grooves b b are preferably provided at their upper and lower ends with short horizontal portions, which serve as rests or seats for retaining thel neck-band in raised or lowered position. Vhen the neck-band C is turned in opposite direction until the pivot-pins arrive at the upper horizontal portions of the spiral grooves b b, the cap D 'is raised to such an eX- tent above the bottle-mouth that it can be thrown on the pivot-pins d d into open position sidewise oi' the bottle-neck, as shown in Fig. 4. In this position of the cap the bottle is readily filled or emptied.
To place the bottle-stopper in position on the neck of the bottle, the spiral grooves b b are provided, at a point intermediately between the horizontal ends or seats, and at opposite points of the bottle-neck, with vertical grooves b b', that extend to the upper edge of the neck B. When the cap D is to be placed in position on the bottle-neck, the pivot-pins d d are inserted in the vertical grooves b' b and moved downwardly along the same until they arrive in the spiral grooves b b. By then turning the cap along the grooves b b until they arrive at the lower ends of the spiral grooves b b, the bottle-cap is tightly pressed on the mouth of the bottle, so as to close the same in a reliable manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv In a bottle-stopper, the combination of a bottle-neck, B, having spiral grooves b b and vertical grooves Z1 b at intermediate points of the spiral grooves, a neck-band, C, a bottlecap, D, having arms D pivoted to said neckband, and an interior elastic packing, D2, the pivot-pins of the cap projecting into and being guided in said grooves, substantially as set forth.
