Description
{ 2 April 4, 1961 K. A. BERGSTEDT 2,977,923
MARINE INBOARD MOTOR POWER UNIT Filed March 24, 1959 INVENTOR BY y" APTTORNEYS toward said. groove. I substantially parallel to the side faces. of the flange 9.
Karl AbdonBergstedt, Goteborg, swedena assig'rior to Alifiebolage'ti Pent-a ;Goteborg iswedeny a: corporation This invention relates to a marine inboard motor power unit in which the output shaft of the motor extendshorizontally or substantially horizontally through the stern of the boat and is connected to a transmission gear.
housed in a gear case andcomprising two bevel gearings and an intermediate vertical shaft to transmit the motor output to a propeller.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved power unit in which the motor and the gear case are combined to form a single unit which by means of" a single supporting and sealing device is supported by a base plate secured to the stern of the boat. As a result of such an arrangement, theunit can be easily mounted and detached and, due to the location of the motor close to the stern of the boat, there is obtained a maximum of available space within the boat. t
' The above object and further objects and advantages are attained by the arrangement and combination of parts illustrated in the annexed drawing which shows a partially sectional elevation of an inboard motor power unit constructed in accordance with the invention;
Referring to the drawing, reference numeral 1 denotes the preferably plane stern'board or transom of a motor boat and numeral 2 an opening in the stern. A metallic base plate 3 suitably secured to the outside of the stern such as by means of bolts 4 has a tubular neck portion 5 the external diameter of which closely fits the. opening 2 in the stem 1. Suitable means, not shown, are pro- 1 vided to'eifect a seal between the partsl and 3;
The inboard motor 6 -may be of any suitable type and has a fly-wheel case 7 which merges into asimilar neck portion 8. Neck portion 8 is of smaller diameter than neck portion 5 and is located radially inwardly thereof. The space between the twoflneck portions is occupied by a device constituting an elastically; deformable support for the unit. The neck portion '5 of the base plate 3 has "an internalprojectiori or flange'9 with sloping side faces Patented Apr. ,4, 1961 bevefgearing" 19; a'vertical transmission shaft 20 mnectin'g theqgearing 19 to a second bevel gearing-21 and aj drive'sha'ft. ZZiforthe propeller 23: An oil-circulation pump and, otherauxiliariesnot shown, may also be provided in the gear case 17. i
To steer the boat, the gearrcase 17 is movedhorizontallyfabout'aj vertical axis. To thisend, theiou'tput shaft 15 Oftheniotor andthe shaft 18 "in'the ear case 17 m st 10 be. articulated' to each'other, such as by means; of auniversar oimj provided ,betwr'een said shaft s, in the space between the" neck portions and thegear case 17,.- This space is closed by} nieans'of abellows 25 of rubber or simiIarTmateriaLone end of the bellows being slid onto the neck portion 8 and the other end onto a corresponding projecting portion of the gear case 17 The base plate 3 has a bracket 26 which supports the gear case 17 by means of lugs 27 on the gearcase and a vertical pivot 28 in alignment with the center of the universal joint 24, these parts forming a hinge for the gear case.
In certain cases, it may be desirable to provide an additional support for the motor 6 below the fiy-wheel case 7. As shown in the drawing, a lug 29 secured to the motor casing is connected with a rubber cushion member ing an opening coinciding with the opening in said stern boat. It should also be noted that the construction described facilitates quick exchange of the motor, if necessary.
What I claim is:
'1. In combination with an inboard motor boat having a stern board with an opening therein, a motor within said boat, and a gear case and propeller unit outside said boat on the opposite side of said stern board from said motor; the invention which comprises means for supporting said motor and said gear case and propeller unit solely from said stern board comprising a base plate secured to the outside surface of said stern board and havboard, said motor being operatively connected to said gear case and propeller unit through said stern'board and base plate openings and havinga casing with a neck por-' tion extendinginto the opening in said base'plate, said 1 motor casing neck portion having a circumferential groove A flanged ring .11 is by-means of bolts 10'detachably Y formedbetween the flanged ring 11 and the case 7.
