Description
UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
LEWIS NEVSOM, OF GALLIPOLIS, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR HEATING ROOMS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 29,710, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS NEwsoM, of Gallipolis, Gallia county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Increasing the I/Varmth of Rooms with the Taste Heat that Escapes from Fires up Chimneys.
My invention consists in forming, or constructing a metallic flue of sheet-iron, castiron, copper, brass, or other metal, and letting` the same into a chimney in such manner, as to close up the iue thereof so as to require, but little of anything else, so as to t-urn the entire current of smoke and waste heat, through said metallic fiue, which I term a radiator. This radiator disperses a portion of the ascending heat through the apartments, in which it is situated andareturns the balance with the smoke to the chimney at any convenient distance, near the plastering ceilings or joists above, to be used in like manner in the room or rooms above, or in other apartments, on the back side of the chimney, or other place if desirable, and finally escape through the top of the chimney into the open air.
That others skilled in the art, may make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation. I construct a metallic radiator, or fiue of any desirable form, rectangular, in the cross front, semicircular, elliptic or other form; and 0f a capacity, equal at least to the draft of the chimney. I extend the inner or back plate of the radiator, a short distance into the flue of the chimney so as to require but little of anything else, to close up the said flue, to change the entire current of the ascending smoke and waste heat.
The form of the radiator, and its appendages, the manner of letting it into the chimney, and its operation, will be all readily understood, by a reference to the anneXed drawing and making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of chimney and radiator, letter c is a front view of chimney, b the radiator, c the handle of scraper. Fig. 2 is a section View, @c side view of chimney and radiator, b radiator c end of rod operating the scraper, CZ entrance from chimney into radiator, e current of heat and smoke f space between chimney and radiator.
The scraper may be required, where the draft of the chimney is too feeble, to scrape off any accumulation of soot or other deposits, but is not deemed a material part- That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
rIhe arrangement of the radiator, const-ructed as specied, in the particular manner described in relation to the fire place and chimney.
LEWIS NEVSOM. Vitnesses:
FRANKLIN CAREL, EDWARD S. MAXON.
