EDMUND A NIDA ATTORNEYS United States Patent C A INTERLOCKING COMBINATION DOOR Edmund A. Nida, Redford Township, Oakland County, Mich. (9590 Hazelton, Detroit 39, Mich.)
Filed Mar. 3, 1958, Ser. No. 718,770
3 Claims. (Cl. 20-16) The invention relates to doors of that type in which portions thereof and also the door frames are formed of extruded metal bars or bars of other materials such as Fiberglas, vinyls or plastics or any combination thereof formed by molding or extrusion for example. This type has the advantage that the said bars may be made of any desired cross sectional contour so that each of the several sides of the door will interfit adjacent portions of the door frame with provision for retaining a resilient sealing strip therebetween. However, the sealing to be effective depends upon the condition of this strip which after continued use sometimes becomes defective. It is the object of my invention to insure more effective sealing by providing an additional inter-engagement between door and frame which may be accomplished by modification in the cross sectional contour of the extruded bars. To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through adjacent portions of the frame and swinging stile of the door in the closed position of the latter.
Fig. 2 is a similar section through the hinged stile and adjacent frame.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified construction.
As shown the stiles A of the door are formed by hollow extruded bars A having on the inner side thereof a projecting flange A for attachment of a central panel or any other means, not shown) for completing the inclosure between stiles. B is a stile of the door frame having an L-shaped portion B for receiving the door stile and an outwardly extending flange B for overlapping the wall. Any desired cross sectional contour may be imparted to the members A and B but, as shown, the member A has adjacent arcuate portions A and A forming the outer wall and the member B has a somewhat similar contour of the flange B The L-shaped portion B is fashioned with an undercut groove B therein for receiving a resilient sealing strip C contacting with the portion A to form the seal. There is also formed a return bent portion B adjacent to the portion B for completing the connection with the wall.
With the construction as thus far described one of the door stiles A is connected by a hinge D to the adjacent frame stile B while the other door stile A swings into engagement with the L-shaped portion B' of the opposite frame stile B. The resilient strips C contact with both of these stiles A when the door is in closed position.
As above stated, the sealing strip C may when worn become ineffective as a seal and it is the object of my invention to overcome such defect. This is accomplished by adding to the cross sections of the members A and B portions which form a tongue and groove engagement with each other. More specifically and as shown a flange A extending outward substantially in line with the portion A forms an L-shaped portion which tor 2,960,733 Patented Nov. 22, 1960 2 gether'with the L-shaped portion B of the bar B forms a hollow rectangle. A flange A extending from the end of the flange A into the hollow forms the tongue and a flange-B on the member B completes the groove. The clearance between the tongue and groove may be quite restricted so as to check flow of air therebetween. If desired the pair of bars for door and frame on the hinge side thereof may have the tongue and groove portions concentric with the axis of the hinge, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby reducing necessary clearance. Thus, even if the door is not tightly closedagainst the sealing strip C, the tongue and groove engagement will restrict passage of air thereby. 1 r
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3 the frame bar only has an L-shaped portion and the door bar extends therewithin with the tongue and groove engagement E and E on the inner side of the L, and one or more additional projecting'tongues F and F adjacent to the outwardly extendingportion of said L to further restrict air flow between said bars.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A door and a frame therefor hingedly connected to each other and having interfitting marginal portions formed by pairs of bars, the bar forming the swinging stile of the door having a cross section comprising a hollow generally rectangular portion having means at one end thereof for attachment to a central door panel, an L-shaped portion extending from one corner at the other end of said rectangular portion in the plane of said door and terminating in a portion extending parallel to the ends .of said rectangular portion and toward the other corner of said other end of said rectangular portion, and a portion extending outward from said other corner and in the plane of said door, the bar forming the hinged stile of the door having a cross section comprising a hollow generally rectangular portion having means at one end thereof for attachment to a central door panel, straight portions extending outwardly in the plane of said door and perpendicular to the other end of said rectangular portion at both corners of said other end, and a centrally located arcuate portion extending outwardly away from said door at the other end of said rectangle from between said straight portions, said arcuate member being concave toward the hinged connection between the door and frame.
2. A door and a frame therefor hingedly connected to each other and having interfitting marginal portions formed by pairs of bars, the bar forming the swinging stile of the door having a cross-section comprising a hollow generally rectangular portion, a portion centrally located on and extending perpendicularly outwardly from one end of said rectangular portion to facilitate attachment of the swinging stile of said door to a central door panel, an L-shaped portion extending from one corner at the other end of said rectangular portion in the plane of said door and terminating in a portion extending parallel to the ends of said rectangular portion and toward the other corner of said other end of said rectangular portion, and a portion extending outward from said other corner and in the plane of said door, the interfitting frame bar for said bar forming the swinging stile of said door having a cross-section comprising a U-shaped portion extending in the plane of said door and opening inwardly toward said frame, one side of said U-shaped portion being located to contact the portion of said swinging stile of said door extending outward from said other corner in the plane of said door, a second portion extending at right angles from the free end of one leg of said U-shaped portion and parallel to the edge of said door and terminating in a portion in the plane of said door and extending away from said door, and an L-shaped portion attached to and extending perpendicular to said second portion in the plane of said door and terminating in a portion extending perpendicularly away from said U- shaped section, said L-shaped portion of said swinging stile interfittingwith said L-shaped portion of said interfitting frame bar in spaced relation thereto to prevent direct through drafts around the edge of said door.
3. A door and a frame therefor hingedly connected to each other and having interfitting marginal portions formed by pairs of bars, the bar forming the hinged stile of the door having a cross section comprising a hollow generally rectangular portion having means at one end thereof for attachment to a central door panel, straight portions extending outwardly in the plane of said door and perpendicular to the other end of said rectangular portion at both corners of said other end, and a centrally located arcuate portion extending outwardly away from said door at the other end of said rectangle from between said straight portions, said arcuate member being concave toward the hinged connection between the door and frame, the interfitting frame bar for the bar forming the hinged stile of said frame having a cross section comprising a U-shaped portion extending in the plane of said door and opening inwardly toward said frame, said U-shaped portion being located to contact one of said straight portions extending from the other end of said rectangular portion, a second portion extending at right angles from the free end of one leg of said U-shaped portion and parallel to the edge of said door and terminating in a portion in the plane of said door and extending away from said door, and an arcuate portion extending outwardly from said second portion and away from said U-shaped portion, said arcuate portion of said hinged stile of said door being adjacent but in spaced relation to the arcuate portion of said interfitting frame bar to prevent direct through drafts around the edge of said door.
