Description

No Model.)
- '3. RICE.
- BEER CHIP-7. v
No. 295,944. Patented-Apt 1,.1884.
WITNESSES: I INVBNTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD RICE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BEER-CHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,944, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed August 6, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
1% it known that I, BERNARD Bron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Chips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to thatclass of beer,- chips having permanent figures, designs, indentations, or recesses burned or branded in one or both sides of the surface, for the purpose of increasing their superficies for more effectually clarifying beer in its manufacture.
Heretofore beerchips have been made with regular grooves and indentations cut, sawed, or embossed in them parallel with the grain of the wood, and also at right angles-or oblique to the same, in order to increase the number of the superficies in the wood, and at the same time improve the clarifying properties of the beer-chip.
The object of my present invention is to per-. manently burn or brand in one or more surfaces of the chip figures, lines, indentations, or recesses of any desired design or in any direction, thereby producing an irregular surface and number of superficies, which will more readily take up the impurities of the beer in its manufacture. By burning the indentations or recesses in the chip a permanent roughened surface is always secured, as the liquid will not in any way affect the burned-out parts by swelling or otherwise. The burning or branding, moreover, has the effect to purify the wood by burning out the impurities-such as resin-and slightly charring the woody fibers, and thereby greatly increasing the purifying and clarifying qualities of the chip. It may be remarked that by treating the chip in this manner any desired design of indentation or recess may be made, which cannot be done by rolls, saws, or knives.
The accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2, show my invention, in which A designates the chip itself, and a the indentations, figures, or recesses, made in an irregular way by burning or branding them in the surface of the wood.
In carrying out my invention, I talreaslieet of thin veneer, produced in any of the wellknown ways, and subject it to the pressure, in any suitable manner, of heated plates having the desired designs engraved or cast thereon.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvedarticle of manufacture, a beer-chip having lines, grooves, recesses, or figures of any desired design burned or branded in it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a
\ In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD RICE.
