Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT -oEEioE ASA GREENWOOD, OF TOULON, ILLINOIS.
TENONINGr-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,589, dated August 14, 1860.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA GREENWOOD, of Toulon, in the county of Stark and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful or Improved Tenoning-Frame; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view; Fig. Q., a side elevation, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of it. Fig. 4, is an inner side view of the rear, adjustable bearer. Fig. 5, is a longitudinal section of the front bearer and its adjusting screw.
In carrying out my invention I make use of two bars, A, A, arranged parallel to each other and with a space, B, between them. These bars I connect by means of two cross bars, C, C, placed one over the other and on opposite sides of the bars, A, A, as shown in the drawings. The bars C, C, serve as shoulder guides or to carry inclined shoulder gages D, D, which are formed and arranged as shown.
Between the gages, D, D, and from the bars A, A', respectively, thin projections, E, E', are eirtended they being connected by transverse rails, G, Gr. These rails and the project-ions are formed so as to support and guide a rabbeting plane, end, side, and bottom views of which are given in Figs. 6, 7, and 8.
Besides the bars, C, C', there is another cross bar, H, affixed to the bars A A, in the position as shown in the drawings. This bar carries an adjust-able slider or bearer, I, whose lower edge is formed with serrations, or inclined planes, a, a, a., to rest on similar serra-tions, b, b, made in the bar, H. Furthermore, the bar, I, is held to the bar, H, by screws, b', b, extending through slots, 0, 0. By means of the said serrations or inclined planes and the slots and screws the upper edge or surface of the bearer, I, may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the plane of the underside of the bar, C, as circumstances may require. The bar, C, carries another such adjustable bearer K, the two being provided with adjusting inclined planes as shown at e, e, e, f, f, f, by which when the bearer K is being moved endwise, its upper surface may be moved either toward or away from the lower surface of the bar, C, such movement being effected by a screw L, suitably applied to the bearer, K, and the bar, C. The adjusting bars I, K, combined with the recess, B, are to enable it to support stuff of any thickness that may be used.
M is a stop bar which is hinged to two adjustable blocks, N, N, applied to the bars, A, A by means of clamp screws O, O, working through slots, P, P, the whole being so as to enable the bar, M, to be adjusted with respect to the bar, C. lVhen turned down, the bar M, projects below the upper surfaces of the bars, A, A, and constitutes a stop or gage for the stu to rest against while a tenon may be in the process of being formed on its opposite end. Each bar, C, H, may be provided with a series of holes made vertically through it, such serving to aid in confining the stuff in the tenoning frame by means of pins and wedges.
In operating with this apparatus, the boards, blind or such stuff as is to be tenoned should be placed in the space B and between the bars, C C, and should project beyondI them or their shoulder gages D, D', the proper distance for the length of tenon to be formed. This having been done, the stuif should be secured in place by means of wedges. The plane is next moved along the shoulder gages D, D, and between them and the rails, G, G, so to form the tenon as shown at t, in Fig. 9. After a. tenon may have been formed on one end of a piece of stuff, the piece may be turned about or reversed in the frame, the stop bar, M serving as a gage for it to rest against, while a tenon may be severally made on its opposite ends.
It is intended to have the tenoning frame so made, capable of carrying several pieces of stuff at a time in order that they may all be tenoned at one time.
I claim- 1. The combination and arrangement of the tool bearers, E, E', the shoulder gages, D, D, the holding recess B, and the back gage IWI, such being for the formation of rabbets on opposite sides of stuff by a plane so as to make a tenon on such stuff as described.
2. The combination of the adjustable bars I, K, with the tool bearers, E, E', the shoulder gages, D, D', the holding recess B, and the stop bar, M, arranged and applied together substantially as specified.
