Description
June 24, 1958 L. G. HUXTABLE ET AL ABRADI-NG TOOL. HOLDER Filed June 20, 1957 ing manner.
2,839,817 1 ABRADING TOOL HOLDER Leonard Garth Huxtable, New York, N. -Y., and Eugene A L. Staiger, Greenfield, Massqassignors to Millers Falls- Company, Greenfield, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application June 20, 1957, Serial No. 666,944 3 Claims. (Cl. 29-80) function and which greatly facilitates abrading blade replacement.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description of the disclosure found in the accompanying drawing and the novelty thereof pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing: 4
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an abrading tool holder embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view, on a slightly enlarged scale, of the holder seen in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line IIl-lll in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section, on a further enlarged scale, taken on line lV-IV in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a section, on said further enlarged scale, taken on line VV in Fig. 2.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the holder of the present invention comprises an elongated metal frame having a handle 12 at one end a hand grip or knob 14 at its other end. An abrading blade 16 is secured to the underside of the frame 10 and is supported throughout its length, along its outer marginal edges, by frame flanges 18. The abrading blade 16, as herein shown, is of the perforated type and the o-penwork of the frame 10 permits dust and shavings to pass through the blade perforations and then be disposed of by turning the frame 10 upside down. It will be noted that the frame 10 is reenforced by interconnecting portions at either end and an intermediate web 19.
From Fig. 1 it will be seen that the blade supporting surface provided by the flanges 18 is upwardly offset at both ends by reason of the illustrated beveled portions. In this manner clearance is provided for the blade attaching means now to be described. At the forward end of the frame 10 (Fig. 5), a pin 20 is fast in a frame crosspiece and terminates short of the lower level of the blade 16 (see also Fig. 1). The pin 20 is undercut or grooved to receive one edge of a hole 22 (Fig. 2) in blade 16 as said blade is passed over the pin. The forward end of the blade 16 is thus hooked to the frame 10.
The rear end of the blade 16 is secured in the follow- A pin-like member 24 depends through a slotted opening 26 at the rear end of the frame 10 and terminates short of the lower level of the blade 16 in a manner similar to pin 20. The member 24 is also undercut or grooved to receive the edge of an opening 27 (Fig. 3) at the rear end of the blade 16.
v The blade 16 is maintained in locked relation on the pin 2% and member 24 by reason of said member 24 being drawn rearwardly. This is accomplished by rotating Uni d g a knob-"28 (Fig. 4; which r r 2,839,817 Patented June 24, 1958 I 2 s a threadably receives a rearwardly bent; or angled upper portion of themember 24.
lt'wilibeseen that-the knob -28-isgrooved, intermediate its ends, at 30 to receive the recessed end wall 32 of the frame. This arrangement in combination with the bot- .tom edge of the handle 12 and a projection 34 therefrom provide journal means for the knob 28 and at the same time prevent axial movement thereof.
In passing it can be noted that the handle 12 is secured to the frame 10 by a screw 36 in a novel manner more fully described in our copending application Serial No. 668,201, filed June 26, 1957.
Of greater importance is the fact that the screw 36 .is threaded into aframe crosspiece 38 (Fig. 4) which in combination with a vertical web 40, a bottom wall 42, and a rear wall 32 forms a chamber at the rear of the frame 10. This chamber substantially seals off the threads of screw 36 and the threaded portion of the pin-like member '24 from dust and shavings resulting from use of the blade 16 and thus prevents fouling.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A holder for an abrading blade, said holder comprising an elongated frame having undercut means at one end for engaging an inwardly facing edge of the abrading blade adjacent one end thereof, an open topped chamber defined by walls including a rear wall at the other end of said frame, undercut means extending from said chamber to engage an inwardly facing edge of the abrading blade adjacent its other end, said undercut means having an integral portion extending rearwardly within said chamber, the rear wall of said chamber being slotted to the top thereof, a knob threaded onto said rearwardly extending portion and grooved to receive opposite portions of the rear wall defining said slot, and a handle secured to said frame covering the top of said chamber and closing off the top of said slot across the said opposite portions to maintain the knob in said slot.
2. A holder as in claim 1 wherein the frame is provided with marginal flanges for engaging the marginal portions of longitudinal edges of the abrading blade.
3. A holder for an elongated flat abr-ading blade having a hole adjacent each end, said holder comprising an elongated frame having depending flanges for engaging the longitudinal marginal edges of said blade and maintaining at least the central portion of the blade in a flat condition, the lower portions of the forward and rear portions of said frame being upwardly offset, a fixed undercut pin depending from the forward ofiset portion of said frame to engage an edge of one of the holes in the abrading blade, said pin terminating short of the lower work engaging surface of said central portion of the blade, a pin-like member having an undercut portion depending from the rear offset portion of said frame to engage an edge of the other of said holes in the abrading blade, said frame having an open topped chamber defined by walls at its rear end, said chamber walls including the rear end wall of the frame, a wall forwardly thereof, and a bottom wall provided with a slot permitting extension of the pin-like member'therethrough,
said pin-like member having an upper horizontal portion said frame, said screw extending through said chamber 684,171 and being threaded into one of the chamber Walls; 1,529,472 2,127,176
