SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,406, dated August 21, V1883.
I Application filed May 17, 1883. (No model.)
iro ZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, AUGUsTINn LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellows Falls, in the county of W'indhani and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful N ib- Iron ibrScythe-Snaths, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to nib-irons for Scythesnaths; and its object is to provide simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient means for splicing the nib-iron in lieu of welding it, which latter is a costly and troublesome process.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, showing my improved nib-iron and the nib-wood or handle in position on the scythesnath. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through where the ends of the nibiron are spliced. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on a longitudinal plane throughthis splice. Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofthe parts of. the nib-iron separated.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the nib-iron proper, which is bent in the forni of a loop, B, that enc-i1 cles the seythe-snath G in the usual manner, and has its ends brought together, as shown at D D. Heretofore these ends have been simply welded together, passed through the nib-wood or handle, and then secured by a nut; but this method of welding the irons has proved very expensive and generally unsatisfactory.
E designates a tip-piece, which' is vpreferably formed of malleable iron, having its outer end portion, F, screw-threaded and provided with a recess, G, in one side at its inner end.
' cess, as shown.
.now placed in position, (it being provided with a longitudinal perforation, L, to receive the nib-iron,) and the whole is secured by a nut, M, working on the screw-threaded end F of the tip-piece E.
The advantages ofmy invention will be readily understood and appreciated.. It is very simple and inexpensive, and is far more durable and eliicient in practice than if it were welded;
besides, the parts can be readily interchanged for substitution or other purposes.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the-looped nib-iron having the transverse groove in its adjoining ends, the tip-piece having the screw-threaded end and provided with the recess in its inner end which receives the grooved ends, and is formed .with the end bridge and side iianges bent over these ends, the nib-wood or handle, Aandthe end securing-nut, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTIN E LAN E.
