Application July 12, 1956, Serial No. 597,461
1 Claim. (Cl. 20680) This invention relates to merchandising and more particularly to a display device which may be utilized to conveniently hold and display hosiery, as well as a plurality of swatches of material showing color lines, the
display device being so designed as to be conveniently incorporated in a loose-leaf binder and/or special carrying case.
As is well known, hosiery is now manufactured in many different styles and/or patterns and colors, together with a wide variety of patterns, and in the merchandising of such hosiery, it is customary for salesmen to carry samples thereof, which must be maintained in clean, attractive and presentable condition at all times and yet be readily available for inspection. While individual packages for such hosiery may be employedflhese are inconvenient and bulky and consequently, an arrangement which will permit incorporation of samples in a loose-leaf binder and/ or special carrying case effectively protects the same and, at the same time, provides a readily available means of inspection. It is also common practice to manufacture several different basic styles of hosiery and to provide a variety of colors in each basic style and accordingly, one sample of the basic hosiery style may be displayed and a plurality of swatches showing the various colors available in that style may also be carried and displayed in order to assist the salesman.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a hosiery display device which may be conveniently and economically manufactured from readily available material, such as cardboard, or the like, and which may be incorporated in a loose-leaf binder, and/or special carrying case.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hosiery display device, including means for retaining folded hosiery in place in flat, readily visible condition and, at the same time, to retain and display a plurality of swatches or material showing the different patterns available in the particular style of hose carried by the display device.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hosiery display device for retaining folded hosiery in a flat display position and at the same time, permitting convenient removal or replacement of such hosiery for inspection purposes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hosiery display device for holding and displaying hosiery and in which such hosiery is securely held in place without mutilation or damage thereto and without necessitating the use of fastening means extending through such hosiery.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front plan view of a hosiery display device constructed in accordance with this invention and showing folded hosiery in place thereon in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 a rear plan view of the hosiery display device shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. With continued reference to the drawing there is shown a hosiery display device constructed in accordance with this invention and which may well comprise a generally rectangular panel having top and bottom edges 11 and 12 respectively and side edges 13 and 14. The panel 10 may be provided with a plurality of apertures 15 adjacent the side edge 13 in order to permit convenient incorporation of the panel in a loose leaf binder or other similar device.
- The panel 10 may be cut in any desired manner from any suitable material, such as cardboard, plastic or the like,,and the entire panel may, if desired, be formed in a single die-cutting operation. There is provided in the panel 10 an elongated slot 16 spaced from the top edge 11 and substantially parallel thereto and the slot 16 is formed with a tongue 17 extending from the bottom edge 18 of the slot 16 and terminating in spaced relation to the top edge. The side edges 20 and 21 of the tongue 17 terminate in spaced relation to the side edges 22 and 23 respectively of the slot 16 and notches 24 and 25 are provided in the side edges 20 andv 21 respectively of the tongue 17. Received inthe notches 24 and 25 and extending around the tongue 17 is an elastic band 26, the purpose of which will be presently described.
A second elongated slot 27 is provided in the panel 10 spaced from the first slot 16 toward the bottom edge 12 of the panel 10 and substantially parallel to the slot 16. A tongue 28 extends from the top edge 29 of the slot 27 and terminates in spaced relation to the bottom edge 30 of the slot 27. The side edges 31 and 32 of the tongue 28 terminate in spaced relation to the side edges 33 and 34 respectively of the slot 27 and the side edges 31 and 32 of the tongue 28 are provided with notches 35 and 36 respectively. An elastic band 37 extends entirely around the tongue 28 and is received in the notches 35 and 36. The purpose of such elastic band 37 will be presently described.
It is to be noted, that the tongues 17 and 28 are in the plane of the panel 10 and furthermore, that the slots 16 and 27 extend from a point adjacent the side edge 13 to a point substantially midway between the side edges 13 and 14 of the panel 10.
As shown in Fig. 1 in dotted outline, a single sock 38 or if desired, a folded pair of hosiery may be positioned beneath the elastic bands 26 and 37 which will serve to securely hold the sock 38 in place on the panel 10 and it is to be noted, that the notches 24 and 25 in the tongue 17, as well as the notches 35 and 36 in the tongue '28 will retain the elastic bands 26 and 37 in position and the sock 38 will be retained in a flat, substantially unwrinkled condition, due to the fact, that the contraction of the elastic bands 26 and 37 is limited by the side edges of the tongues 17 and 28. As will be seen, the sock 38 is readily visible or may, if desired, be conveniently removed from the elastic bands 26 and 37 to permit closer inspection thereof. The sock may then be readily replaced beneath the bands 26 and 37 and will be retained on the panel 10 for future examination.
Since, as stated above, it is frequently desirable to display a plurality of swatches showing the various colors available in a particular hosiery style, there has also been incorporated in the display device of this invention means for retaining a plurality of such swatches and this means may well take the form of a mask 39 comprising a gengerally rectangular sheet overlying the panel 10 and secured thereto by a suitable adhesive or the like extending around the edges of the mask 39 and leaving the central portion thereof free of the panel 10. The mask 39 is secured to the panel between the top and bottom edges 11 and 12 and extends from the side edge 14t0 a point substantially midway between the side edges 13 and 14 and the mask 39 may be provided with a plurality of display openings 40.
Asbestshown in Figs. 3 and 5, a plurality of swatches 41 may be disposed between the panel 10 and the mask 39 and such swatches 41 will be visible'through the display apertures 40. The swatches 41 may be inserted or removed merely by sliding the same beneath the sheet forming the mask 39 and such swatches will be retained in place in a flat condition and will be fully visible through the openings 40.
It 'Will thus be seen, that by the above described invention, there has been provided a relatively simple, yet highly effective hosiery display device which may be utilized for retaining a sample sock or other hosiery in fiat display condition and protect the same against damage and, at the same time, a plurality of swatches of material showing various colors may be retained and displayed and the entire display device may be con veniently incorporated in a looseleaf or other binder, in order to occupy a minimum of space.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and, therefore, the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
