(Cl. 1511-52) 'fthe telescopic sight is mounted at about the point of balanceof the rearm so that when the rearm is disposed in a conventional carrying case, the telescopic sight is usually adjacent the handle and thus subject to stresses and strains resulting from the carrying of the firearm in the case. The present invention provides means for protecting the telescopic sight as well as the rearm so that protected against injury.

Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a rearm carrying case that is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and capable of being adapted for use with rearms of any selected size or type.

These, together with the various ancillary objects and the telescopic sight will not become misaligned and will be features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this firearm case and telescopic sight protective attachment, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:

Figure l is an elevational view of the invention shown with the case in an open position andwith a firearm disposed therein;

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2-2 of Figure' 1 with the case in closed condition and illustrating the manner in which the invention is adapted `to protect la. firearm having a telescopic sight mounted thereon; and

Figure 3 is a sectional detail view of a modified form of the invention employing detachable means for the telescopic sight protective attachment.

With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates the firearm case comprising the present invention which is adapted to receive a firearm such as a rifle 12 having a telescopic sight 14 mounted thereon. The telescopic sight is usually mounted by adjustable brackets and may in some instances be knocked out of alignment should the telescopic sight 14 be subjected to unnecessary strain. The present invention comprises means for protecting the telescopic sight 14.

The firearm case 10 includes a sheet 16 which is padded yet formed of a exible material such as leather or plastic,

2,872,960 Patented Feb. 10, 1959 which has an inner lining of a felt-like material or cloth, and which has suitable padding. The outer cover is shown at 20 and the felt lining at 22 with the padding designated at 18. The firearm case 10 is provided with suitable handles such `as are indicated at 24 and 26 which are in alignment with the balance point of the weapon to be carried in the firearm case 10. It is noted that the telescopic sight 14 is usually mounted for convenience in use adjacent the balance point of the firearm 12 and therefore, in normal use, the rearm 12 when carried would have the telescopic sight 14 thereof subjected to certain undesired stresses.

The peripheral edge of the sheet 16 is provided with a slide fastener 28 which can be used to close the sheet 16 to form the case. The sheet 16 is foldable along a longitudinal center line 30. Stitched to the sheet 16 by means of stitches as at 32 along the longitudinal center line 30 is a panel 34 of flexible material such as felt having an inner padding as at 36 with the inner edge 37 of the panel 34 lying along the center line 30. This panel 34 is of rectangular shape and has a width greater than one-half of the greatest width of the sheet '16 when spread l out as shown in Figure 1. This enables the panel 34 to be folded into overlying position relative to the telescopic sight 14 and to overlie the firearm 12 as can be best seen in Figures l and 2.

In lieu of the stitching arrangement as is shown in Figure 2, suitable staples or the like may be used or a detachable fastener such as the male and female snap fasteners as indicated at 38 and 40 in Figure 3 can be employed which enables the panel 42 to be readily detached from the sheet 44 of this embodiment of the invention when not necessary. Thus, the rearm case may be readily used to carry firearms without a telescopic sight and the panel 42 may be eliminated thus making the firearm easy to withdraw from the case.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

A firearm case comprising a padded exible protective sheet foldable about a central longitudinal line to form a casing substantially conforming to the contours of a firearm, and a flexible padded panel secured to said sheet for encompassing a telescopic sight on said rearm, said flexible padded panel having an inner edge thereof lying on and in longitudinal alignment with said central longitudinal line, a slide fastener extending about the peripheral edge of said sheet, said panel being rectangular in shape and having a width greater than one-half the greatest width of the sheet when it is spread out in open position for folding into enclosing relation to a telescopic sight, said panel being secured to said sheet by stitches adjacent to and along said inner edge thereof.
