RADIANT HEAT FUEL-BURNER United States Patent fice Frederic O. Hess, Philadelphia,fPa., assignor to 'Selas Corporationof America, Philadelphia, Pa., a corporau tin ofPenns'ylvania This invention relates to a radiant Eheat fuel burner.
More specifically, the invention* concernsaburnetofthe f that the top panels tend .to warp .to a l-lirni-ted extent as a y Aresultwfl the heat-of the burner, and the 'extentoff'such Warpageis `increased '-withwincreased intensity 4ofheat, which is conducted-from,the` burnerto the top pa'nel of -the range.
It is accordingly arrobjectiof thisinvention to provide a'n improved radiant heat'ffuel burnerk structure which overcomes the heating Zand warping problems justvdescribed. Still another objectof this-invention' isto' provide 'akitchen-.rangelhaving :a radianti-heat ga's burn'er which is'suspended from 1the-toppanel of the range, and which Iis therefore free tomove with thetoppanel if all or any part'of the top panel shouldrnove. Still another object of this invention is to rninimizethe transfer' of heat from the burner structure tothe `top panel=offthe range, thereby minimizingtheivvarpage"of -the toppanel and provviding a cooler` exposed range surface.
Still'anothe'r object oflthis inventionis to provide connecting Yand'sealing.rneans associated with `theftop `panel ofi a kitchenrange and with the exposedcover 'plate of the'radiant heatgas burner, which sealing` means not only secures the respective parts together butfalsopro'- tects the'internal--parts of the-gasburneragainst damage froml spilled' foods, fluids; etc.
Another object ofthisinvention is-to providea radiant heat gas burner having an improved and simplified feed means for the-gestand air. VOther objects and advantages of this invention, including the isimplicityand economy. of the same, and the ease With which the invention rmaybe applied toranges and other heaters of 4various types, will further become apparent hereinafter and in the dra-wings, whereof:

Accordingly it will be appreciated that the seal ring 35 and clamp ring 36 secure the cover plate 21, top panel 31, wings 34 and seats 33 in a xed relative position, thereby firmly securing the radiant heat burner to the top panel 31.
It will be appreciated that the burner and top panel are readily assembled by placing the cover plate 21 on top of the exhaust duct 26, the spacing of the cover plate 21 being determined by a spacer ring 42 formed at the top of the exhaust duct 26. The wings 34 are then fitted on the seats 33, and the seal ring and clamp ring structure 3S, 36 is applied downwardly, the vertical slot 37 being aligned vertically with the seat 33 and Wing 34. The seal ring 35 is then displaced circumferentially, whereupon each clamping extension 41 engages the corresponding seat 33, clamping it to the burner wing 34 immediately above.
It will accordingly be appreciated that the radiant heat burner is suspended from the top of the range, and is free to rise and fall should the range top warp. Moreover, the burner fits snugly against the range top even though the latter may not be exactly level.
In accordance with this invention, not only is the disadvantageous effect of the burner heat substantially eliminated, but the extent of such heat is also greatly reduced. It will be observed that the inner surfaces of the exhaust duct 26 are insulated by means of a ceramic liner 44 which covers said inside surface. The liner 44 may comprise a separate casting having the same shape as the inside surfaces of the exhaust duct 26. On the other hand, other forms of insulating surfaces may be substituted, and the ceramic insulation may be applied in other ways, as will readily be apparent.
Turning to the fuel combustion portion of the apparatus, it will be observed that the inner tube 24 has an outwardly extending flange 43 having a plurality of vertically extending openings 45 which are arranged substantially perpendicular to the cover plate 21. It will be appreciated that the partial pre-mix consisting of gas and air flows vertically through the openings 45 into the combustion space 22. Although it has heretofore been believed necessary to introduce the partial pre-mix in a radial direction outwardly across the combustion space 22, it has now been discovered that excellent combustion characteristics are obtained in accordance with the new construction just described. The radial ow of secondary air from the tube 24 coacts with the vertical gas flow to form a flat, uniform flame which spreads out radially against the surface of the refractory disc 20. This is an excellent flame since it quickly and uniformly heats the refractory ring to incandescence.
It will be appreciated that the radiant heat gas burner preferably includes automatic pilot operated means for igniting the mixture of gas and air, as well as other apparatus, as illustrated in the aforementioned co-pending patent application of John Roger Williams. Such features are not shown in the drawings, inasmuch as they constitute no part of the present invention.
It will further be appreciated that either raw gas or partial pre-mix may be provided in the annular space between the tubes 24, 25. Such space or passage is referred to for convenience herein as a gas passage or space, although other fuels may be substituted, mixed with air or in the raw state.
Although this invention has been described by reference to one specific embodiment thereof, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes other than those referred to above may be made in the form of the device, that equivalent elements may be substituted for those illustrated in the drawings, and that certain features of the invention may be used to advantage independently of the use of other features, all within the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
