6 Claims. (Cl. 311-1) The present invention relates to tables.
The primary objects of the invention are to provide an all metal and plastic table of round configuration, particularly suitable for classroom use but not limited to such use; to provide such a table having a simple but especially sturdy sheet metal base, tubular metalsupporting columns, and channel bar top frame for the support of a plastic top panel; and in general to provide such a table which is reasonably economical in construction, rugged and durable in use, and attractive in appearance.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the new table;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of parts thereof taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of parts thereof taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the various parts and subassemblies of the table shown in disassembled relation; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the middle portions of the two pedestal elements of the table at their point of intersection.
Referring now in detail to these drawings, the table there shown comprises a base assembly generally designated 10, supporting columns 11, and a top assembly generally designated 12.
The base 10 comprises a pair of elongated horizontally disposed pedestals 13, 14 of downwardly opening channel form having horizontal upper web portions and spaced depending side portions. The pedestal 13 has a cut-away upper middle portion 15 (see Figure 5) and the pedestal 14 has a cutaway lower middle portion i6, whereby the pedestals 13, 14 may be nested at the same level in right angularly intersecting relation at their middles as seen in Figures 14 and 6.
Each of the pedestals has a pair of vertical sockets 17 cylindrically formed in the side walls thereof by complementary semicylindrical embossings in said side walls and disposed between the middle of the pedestal and its opposite ends respectively, the horizontal upper web portions of the pedestals 13, 14 being cut away at these points so that the lower ends of the tubular metal columns 11 can be seated in the sockets 17 and welded to the pedestals. Feet or glides 18 are dependingly secured as by welding to the outer ends of the pedestals for the structure to rest on, and scuff strips 19 are applied to slots 20 in the upper outer ends of the pedestals.
A rigid reinforcing member 21, best seen per se in Figure 5, has a horizontal middle web portion 22 which in the assembled position of the parts as seen in Figure 6 extends through the cut-away portions 15, 16 of both pedestals 13, 14. The reinforcing member 21 has a downwardly extending pair of arms 23, 23 embracing therebetween that portion of pedestal 13 which lies below its cut-away portion 15, and has an upwardly extending 2,843,435 Patented July 15, 1958 pair of arms 24, 24 embracing therebetween that portion of pedestal 14 which lies above its cut-away portion 16.
An upwardly opening channel bracket 25, also best seen per se in Figure 5, is disposed in the lower middle portion of the pedestal 13 and in the assembled positions of the parts as seen in Figure 6 abuts against the middle web portion 22 of the reinforcing member 21. Fastening means are provided in the form of a bolt 26 which passes downwardly through vertically aligned openings in the horizontal upper web of the pedestal 14, in the middle web portion 22 of the reinforcing member 21, and in the lower web portion 27 of the channel bracket 25, and a nut 28 is threaded on the lower end of the bolt 26 for securing the parts in assembly. If desired an apertured cap 29 may be interposed between the head of the bolt 26 and the upper surface of the pedestal 14 to lend a more finished appearance to the structure where the pedestals 13, 14 intersect.
The four tubular metal columns 11 extend from their cylindrically formed sockets 17 in the pedestals 13, 14 upwardly and outwardly and terminate in horizontally outwardly extending arms 3t). Struts 31 of angle bar form (see Figure 3) are each bent to provide end portions 32 which embrace the adjacent sides of an adjacent pair of the columns upper arms 30, and to provide angularly disposed intermediate portions 33 connecting said end portions 32. The adjacent end portions 32 of a pair of struts 31 which lie on opposite sides of one of the upper arms 30, desirably have their meeting upper flanges secured together as by welding 34 (see Figure 5). Bolts 35 are passed through aligned openings in the columns upper arms 30 and in the vertical flanges of the struts end portions 32 and are provided with nuts 36 for securing these parts in assembly. As seen in Figure 5, two crossbars 37 are welded to the struts 31 for strengthening the structure.
A circular frame 38 of inwardly opening channel form is secured as by welding to the outer extremities of the struts 31. A round top panel 39, desirably of plastic material, is disposed over the upper surfaces of the struts 31 and the circular frame 38 and is secured to the frame by means of an outer finishing rim 40 circumscribing the top panel and the frame and desirably secured to the frame as by means of rivets: (not shown).
It will thus be seen that the invention provides a sturdy and attractive round table constructed entirely of durable metal and plastic. While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described it will be understood that numerous details may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. In a table: a base having a plurality of vertical sockets therein; a plurality of columns having their lower ends seated in said sockets and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom and terminating in horizontally outwardly extending upper arms; struts each bent to provide end portions embracing adjacent sides of an adjacent pair of upper arms, and to provide angularly disposed intermediate portions connecting said end portions; fastening means securing said end portions of the struts to said upper arms of the columns; a circular frame secured to the outer extremities of said struts; a round top panel disposed over the upper surfaces of the struts and the circular frame; and an outer rim circumscribing the round top panel and the circular frame for securing the panel to the frame.
-2. A table according to claim 1 in which the struts are of angle bar form and the circular frame is of inwardly opening channel form.
3. In a table: a base comprising a pair of horizontally elongated pedestals disposed in right angularly intersecting relation at their middles, each of said pedestals having a pair of vertical sockets therein disposed between its middle and its opposite ends respectively; four columns having their lower ends seated in said sockets and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom and terminating in horizontally outwardly extending upper arms; struts each bent to provide end portions embracing adjacent sides of an adjacent pair of upper arms, and to provide angularly disposed intermediate portions connecting said end portions; fastening means securing said end portions of the struts to said upper arms of the columns; a circular frame secured to the outer extremities of said struts; a round top panel disposed over the upper surfaces of the struts and the circular frame; and an outer rim circumscribing the round top panel and the circular frame for securing the panel to the frame.
4. In a table: a base comprising a pair of elongated horizontally disposed pedestals, one of said pedestals having a cut-away upper middle portion and the other pedestal having a cut-away lower middle portion whereby said pedestals may be nested at the same level in right angularly intersecting relation at their middles each of said pedestals having a pair of vertical sockets therein disposed between its middle and its opposite ends respectively; a rigid reinforcing member provided with a web portion extending through the cut-away portions of both pedestals and with downwardly and upwardly extending pairs of arms embracing therebetween the portions of the respective pedestals which lie below and above said cutaway portions; four columns having their lower ends seated in said sockets and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom; and a table top mounted on the upper ends of said columns.
5. A table according to claim 4 in which the pedestals are of downwardly opening channel form having horizontal upper web portions and spaced depending side portions; an upwardly opening channel bracket disposed in the lower portion of that pedestal which has its upper middle portion cut away and abutting at its upper end against the web portion of the reinforcing member; and fastening means passing downwardly through vertically aligned openings in the horizontal upper web of that pedestal which has its lower middle portion cutaway, in the Web portion of the reinforcing member, and in the horizontal lower web of said channel bracket, for securing said parts in assembly.
6. In a table: a base comprising a pair of elongated horizontally disposed pedestals, one of said pedestals having a cut-away upper middle portion and the other pedestal having a cut-away lower middle portion whereby said pedestals may be nested at the same level in right angularly intersecting relation at their middles; a rigid reinforcing member provided with a web portion extending through the cut-away portions of both pedestals and with downwardly and upwardly extending pairs of arms embracing therebetween the portions of the respective pedestals which lie below and above said cut-away portions; pair of columns secured at their lower ends to each pedestal on opposite sides of the pedestals intersection; and a table top mounted on the upper ends of said columns.
