Description

March 6, 1956 E. G. VALENTINE ET AL BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTOR Filed March 11, 1954 FIG. I.
IN VEN TOR-S. EMMETT G. WLE/Vf/NE BYRON NOELE United States Patent BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTOR Emmett G. Valentine and Byron Noble, Naugatuck, Conm; said Noble assignor to said Valentine Application March 11, 1954, Serial No. 415,466 1 Claim. (Cl. 339-226) This invention relates to storage batteries and more particularly to a battery terminal post clamping device which may be easily attached to and readily detached from said post.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a side view of the battery terminal clamp as it appears in unlocked position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the tapered battery terminal post located between the pair of jaws and eccentric cam, showing in full lines the locked position of the eccentric cam and in dotted lines the released position thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken at right angles to the section of Fig. 2, along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the cam in locked position.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral indicates a storage battery having a terminal post 11 of the usual tapered construction.
The battery terminal connector of the present invention comprises a clamp body 12 having asocket 13 Within which an electric cable 14 is detachably secured by means of a set screw 15, located in a tapped side hole 16. The body 12 is connected at one end to a pair of horizontally spaced concave jaws 17 and 18 having a pair of horizontal aligned apertures 19 and 20. The apertures 19 and 20 are drilled to loosely receive a horizontal stud 21 which is provided with a hexagonal head 23 for convenience in manipulating said stud.
Between the jaws 17 and 18 provsion is made of an eccentric cam 24 rigidly keyed to the stud 21, by a cross pin 22, said cam having a Clll'VCd tangential outwardly projecting finger 25 which is adapted to serve as a releasing device for engaging the top of the tapered post 11 Whenever the hexagonal head 23 is turned counterclockwise by a wrench (Fig. 2) (not shown), into engagement with the top of said post 11.
Operation In operation, a half clockwise turn of the head 23 of .the cam 24 by means of the wrench Will securely lock said cam against the battery post 11, as shown in Fig. 2.
To release the clamp from the battery post, the hexagonal head 23 will be turned by means of the Wrench counter-clockwise, until the finger 25 strikes the top of the post 11 and positively pulls the connector upwardly therefrom.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
In a battery terminal connector, a body member having in one end a cylindrical socket for receiving a battery cable, said body member being provided at its other end with a pair of concave battery post embracing jaws for receiving a horizontal rotatable stud on which an eccentric cam is keyed, said cam having a curved finger on its free end for engaging the top of said post to release the body member from said post, when the head of said stud is turned in one direction by means of a wrench.
