ELMER A. CONVERSE, OF MONTIOELLO', OHIO.
FIRE- ESCAPE LADDE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,796, dated February 6, 1883.
Application filed April 18, 1882. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER A. CONVERSE, of Monticello, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape Ladder, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fire escapes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved fireescape ladder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ladder and section of the wall ofa building, showing the application of the ladder thereto.
Fig.3 is a detail of the ladder in section through one of the steps. and one of the blocks employed to project the steps outwardly from the wall. Fig. this a detail showing a modified form of the tie-Wire.
A represents the ropes forming the sides of the ladder. B represents the steps; (3. the blocks employed to keep the steps away from the walL' D represents the wall; E, the win: F, hook for connecting the ladder, and G an eye-stud attached to the floor H for the connection of the ladder.
I propose to connect the steps B to the ropes I A by separating the strands of the rope a, slipping the ends of the steps between the strands and binding the ropes and the steps by wire loops 1), bent over and crossing the rope diagonail y, or looped across it from side to side of the rope, and also from side to side of the steps, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, using two of said loops and tying them together by a twist-knot behind; or I may make substantially the same tie with one piece of wire, beginning at the back and bending it diagonally across the step and the rope to the front side, the parts then being on opposite sides of the rope and the step at the front; then looping said parts together across the rope and bond ing them back around the steps and rope to V the starting-point, Where they are made fast by a twist-knot, as in Fig. 4.. But instead of tying the wires directly on the ropes behind, I propose to'tie them around blocks '(J, of two or three inches (more or less) thickness, to cause the steps to project so far from the wall D of the building as will enable the person using the ladder to place the step as is necessary for good foothold.
It will be seen that with ladders of this kind, rolled or coiled in a'heap or on a drum or roller in a room, safe means of egress will always be at hand for persons cut off suddenly and without warning from the common ways of escape.
Having thus described my in'vention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a lire-escape, the combination, with the rope A, provided with the hook F at its upper end,ot'thestepsB,inserted between thestrands of the rope, the block 0, and the Wire ties b, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the steps are secured between the strands of the rope, and the blocks secured to the rope and steps by the same tic,'as setforth.
