7 Claims. (Cl. 267-1) The present invention `relates to a shock isolator and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided'a rectangular base plate having upwardly extending end walls each of which is provided with an inturned ange. A rubber buler member is mounted lbetween the ange and the1base, in each case and positioned adjacent its associated end wall. The anges are interconnected centrally with a horizontally extending strap. A pair of downwardly and outwardly extending plates are hinged together at their upper ends and are interconnected with a pair of tension springs. The lower edges of the plates bear against the base which latter is provided with novel damping elements which are'preferably punched threfrom. The strap which interconnects the flanges extends through suitable opening in the plates whereby to retain the device as a single unit and means is provided for attaching such units either singly or in multiples upon the inner wall of, for example, a packing case or the like with the hinged ends of the plates extending toward and in contact with the load carried by such case. The device is such that it utilizes spring means, elastic means and frictional means in combination to resist shock.
lt is accordingly an object of the invention to provide an isolator having combined frictional, spring and/or elastic means for the resisting of shocks.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be fabricated of a variety of materials.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet eiective and eflicient 1n use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a pair of novel shock resisting plates forming a part of the invention.
Still another object of the'invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel frictionally operated shock resisting elements forming a part of the invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel elastic shock resisting elements forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure l is a plan View of a packing casel having a plurality of the devices of the present invention mounted therein in operative position,
Figure 2 is a plan view of an embodiment of the present invention,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2 and showing the ,device in its normal position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the same in compressed condition,
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figures 3 and 5 but showing the device in a position it might assume when rebounding from a shock applied thereto,
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken along line 7-7 of Figure 2, and
Figure 8 is a somewhat enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along line 8--8 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth having .a generally rectangular base plate 10 having a pair of in- A 2,703,233 Patented Mar. l, 1955 ice tegrally formed upstanding end walls 11 each provided with an integrally formed inwardly extending horizontal flange 12. The flanges 12 are centrally interconnected by means of a guide strap 13 which may be formed of two parts and centrally welded, as indicated at 14.
A buffer strip 15, preferably formed of rubber or like material, `is frictionally mounted adjacent the inner face of each of the end walls l1 and held in position by the adjoining portion of the base 10 and its associated ange 12, it being apparent that each of the buffer members 15 extends transversely with respect to the base 10.
A pair of downwardly and outwardly extending shock plates 16 are hingedly interconnected at their upper ends, as indicated at 17 and the free lower ends of the plates 16 bear against the upper face of the base plate 10. The plates 16 have their lower edges extending transversely with respect to the base plate 10 and in parallel relation to the buffers 15. The plates 16 are each centrally provided with a longitudinal slot 18 which slots encompass the guide strap 13, and a pair of springs 19 interconnect the plates 16 upon either side of the slots 18. If desired, other elastic means, as for example, rubber may be used for `springs 19.
The base plate is provided with a pair of inwardly and upwardly directed frictional dampers 20 each of which is adapted to engage the lower edge of one of the plates 16 and is also provided with a pair of upwardly and outwardly `directed dampers 21 each of which is likewise adapted to engage the free edge of one of the plates 16. The plate 10 may be fastened, for example, to the inner face of a box wall 22 by means of screws 23 or the like. A load 24 is indicated within the packing case illustrated in Figure l.
ln operation, it will be apparent that the device of the present invention may be utilized singly or, as shown, for example, in Figure l, in multiples. lt will be apparent that whether used singly or in multiples, that in each case the base plate 10 will be affixed to, for example, the inner wall of a packing case or the like while the hinge 17 will bear against the load 24 to be protected by the device. Referring now to Figures 3, 5 and 6, it will be apparent that the normal position of the device will be as shown in Figure 3 wherein the lower edges of the plates 16 will lie adjacent the lower ends of the dampers 20 and 21. When, however, a downward shock is imparted to the device it will be seen that such shock is first absorbed or partially absorbed by the springs 19 and the ever increasing frictional engagement of the lower edges of the plates 16 with the dampers 21 and that finally the free ends of the plates 16 will come into contact with the buffers 15 and the remaining portions of the shock imparted to the device will be absorbed by such buffers. lt will also be apparent that if the shock imparted to the device be great enough to cause a rebound of the work piece 24 that upon the outward movement of the plates 16, the lower ends thereof will bear against the dampers 20 in ever increasing frictional engagement therewith. lt will also be apparent that the guide strap 13 will act to maintain the plates 16 and their attached springs 19 in unitary connection with the remainder of the device.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a at base plate, a pair of shock plates hinged together at their outer ends and having their free ends in contact with said base plate, said shock plates extending transversely with respect to said base plate, spring means interconnecting said shock plates, a butter strip of elastic material mounted transversely at each end of said base plate and adapted to resist outward movement of the free ends of said shock plates, and means for limiting preparation of said shock plates from said base plate.

A device of the character described comprising a at base plate, a pair of shock plates hinged together at their outer ends and having their free ends in contact with said base plate, said shock plates extending transversely with respect to said base plate, spring means interconnecting 3 said shock plates, a buffer strip of elastic material mounted transversely at each end of said base plate and adapted to resist outward movement of the free ends of said shock plates, frictional means for resisting movement of said shock plates toward and away from said'buffer strips, and means for limiting separation of said shock plates from said base plate.

A device of the character described comprising a at base plate, a pair of shock plates hinged together at their outer ends and having their free ends in contact with said base plate, said shock plates extending transversely with respect to said base plate, spring means interconnecting said shock plates, a buffer strip of elastic material mounted transversely at each end of said base plate and adapted to resist outward movement of the free ends of said shock plates, and means for limiting separation of said shock plates from said base plate, said limiting means comprising a centrally disposed guide strip affixed to said base plate in spaced relation thereto, and a centrally disposed opening in each of said shock plates for receiving said strip therethrough.

A device of the character described comprising a fiat base plate, a pair of shock plates hinged together at their outer ends and having their free ends in contact with said base plate, said shock plates extending transversely with respect to said base plate, spring means interconnecting said shock plates, a buffer strip of elastic material mounted transversely at each end of said base plate and adapted to resist outward movement of the free ends of said shock plates, frictional means for resisting movement of said shock plates toward and away from said buier strips, and means for limiting separation of said shock plates from said base plate, said limiting means comprising a centrally disposed guide strip aXed to said base plate in spaced relation thereto, and a centrally disposed opening in each of said shock plates for receiving said strip therethrough.

A device as dened in claim 1 wherein said base plate is provided with a pair of integrally formed transverse end walls, wherein an inwardly directed ange is integrally formed with the free end of each end wall, and wherein said buffer strips are each frictionally mounted between its associated ange, end wall and adjacent portion of said base plate.

A device as defined in claim 2 wherein said frictional means comprises pairs of upwardly and inwardly directed and upwardly and outwardly directed dampers struck from and integrally connected with said base plate, each member of each of said pairs being positioned adjacent an end of said base plate and said shock plates having their free ends normally in contact with said base plate at the lowermost portions of said dampers.
7. A device as defined in claim 3 wherein said spring means comprises a pair of tension springs each disposed upon an opposite side of said guide strip.
