Description
Feb. 1, 1955 c. v. CQRNWELL.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE:
F'led Oct. 4. 1951 INVENTOR United States Patent O ADJUSTABLE HINGE Claude V. Cornwell, Louisville, Miss.
Application October 4, 1951, Serial No. 249,746
2 Claims. (Cl. 16-129) The present invention relates to an adjustable hinge.
It is a well known fact that doors and other closure means sag or get out of alignment, and when this happens the closure means or door is incapable of properly closing an opening, and the usual procedure is to remove the door from an opening and reset the hinges.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hinge that will permit adjustment of a door or other closure means without removing the element from an opening, adjust the hinges and place the element in proper operating condition.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a hinge that may be adjusted in different directions without removing the door from the hinges.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a hinge having means for centering and locking a hinge in adjusted position.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a hinge associated with a plate element.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means in one leaf of a hinge for adjusting the hinge relative to the mounting plate element.
Other objects of the present invention will become more apparent from the following description when taken is connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a door and frame and showing the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure l, the dotted line illustrating the door open.
Figure 3 is a top view of the hinge per se.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the hinge and showing the rear face of one leaf and the front face of the other leaf with a cover thereon.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the cover.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking nut.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the disc and showing the radial slot.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the plate, showing rear face.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the threaded bolt.
Figure l0 is a fragmentary elevational view of 'the Ihinge and showing the disc positioned on one leaf of the inge.
Figure 1l is an elevational view of the leaf of the hinge provided with an opening and illustrating the position of the threaded bolt in said opening, the plate carrying the bolt being shown in full and dotted lines, one edge of the leaf being shown fragmentarily.
Figure 12 is an elevational view of the front face of the plate and showing the bolt.
Figure 13 is an elevational view of the hinge and showing the rear face of one leaf and the front face of the other leaf.
Figure 14 is a sectional view taken on line 14-14 of Figure 4 and showing the parts assembled, the bolt being shown in a different position than Figure 1l.
Referring to the drawing the numeral represents the hinge having a pair of leaves 11 and 12. Leaf 11 is deice signed to be secured to the jamb of a doorway or other type of opening and it is secured by screws that engage openings 13 in leaf 11. Leaf 12 has a right-angular formation 14 the leaf being provided with a centrally disposed squared opening 15. I provide a plate 16 having openings 17 that receive screws that engage openings 17 and secure the plate to the face 18 of door 19. The plate 16 is provided with a threaded stud 20 that is positioned midway the ends of said plate and adjacent the side edge 21, and the stud may be detachable or it may be lixedly secured to the plate. The stud 20 engages the squared opening 15 of leaf 12 and the stud receives a clamping disc 22 having a radial slot 23 for centering the washer between the side edge 24 and the inner wall 25 of the right angular formation 14. A nut 26 engages the stud 20 and locks the disc 22 and leaf 12 in its desired position to plate 16. A covel 27 is provided and it engages the peripheral edge of disc 22 thus concealing the disc and nut.
In use the leaf 11 is secured to a door jamb by screws, the plate 16 is then recessed in one face of door 19, one edge of the plate being uniplanar with one longitudinal edge of the door, the plate being secured by screws. The door 19 is then placed in the jamb and wedged until the top, bottom and side are in alignment with the jamb. During placement of the door in the opening, the stud 20 engages the squared opening 15 of leaf 12, the clamping disc 22 is then placed on the leaf, the stud 20 passing through the radial slot 23, the disc then maneuvered until it is centered between the side edge 24 and the inner wall 25. The nut 26 is then engaged by the stud 20, the nut tightened, impinging the disc 22 to the leaf 12. The cover 27 is then placed upon the disc 22 thus concealing the elements. The provision of the right-angular formation 14 in leaf 12 provides for easy adjustment when door or similar element gets out of alignment. The provision of the squared opening 15 provides a wide area for any angular adjustment of stud 20 that may be necessary to place a door in proper alignment in an opening.
While the invention has been described involving the structure shown and described, the device is capable of modifications as to details of construction and arrangement of parts within the scope of the invention herein disclosed and claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. An adjustable hinge for a closure in a frame comprising a pair of leaves, and a plate, one of said leaves having a right angular formation, a centrally disposed opening in said one of said leaves, means for xing said other leaf to said frame, means for fixing said plate to said closure, a threaded stud carried by said plate and engageable in said opening in said leaf, a clamping means having a slot engageable with said stud. a nut engageable with said stud for adiustably securing said clamping means and said one of said leaves to said plate, and means engageable with said clamping means for concealing said nut and clamping means.
2. An adjustable hinge comprising a pair of leaves and a plate, one of said leaves engageable with the jamb of an opening, the other of said leaves having a centrally disposed opening, said plate engageable with the face of a door, a threaded stud carried by said plate and engageable in said opening, a clamping means having a slot engageable by said stud, a nut engaging said stud for adjustably securing said leaf and said clamping means to said plate, and means engageable with said clamping means for concealing said nut and clamping means.
