Claims priority, application Italy October 25, 1954 4 Claims. (Cl. 30-31) The object of the present invention is to provide a combination haircutter and razor.
This device consists essentially of a double comb with a handle, between which comb, consisting of two hinged together adjacent parts, an ordinary double-edge safety razor blade is applied, which blade is moved by hand and regulated in a transversal direction, to the right and to the left, by a groved commanding wheel the axis vof which is parallel to the plane of the movement of the blade, the commanding movement as mentioned, regulating the length of the cut of the hair both at the left and the right side of the blade.
The iteeth of the lower part (half) of the double comb are slightly longer lthan the teeth of the upper half of the double comb. A protection shield slidable over the longer teeth may be used when the device is used as a razor.
These and other characteristics will now be shown in greater detail in relation to -a particular form of execution of the invention, which execution is indicated by way of illustration only, without limiting any other form of execution Within the scope and spirit of the present invention and reference is made to the appended illustrations to render the ideas forming the basis of the present invention more comprehensible.
Fig. 1 is a lateral elevation view with a section of the teeth-protection shield in its place.
Fig. 2 shows a partial lateral elevation with the teethprotection shield slid halfway over the teeth.

1 shows the hollow fiat handle of the device which can be made of any suitable malterial, such as plastic material, for example, which handle is made in two parts (halves) held together by suitable means. One of the parts of the handle' is extended into a fixed double comb 1a to which is attached a mobile double comb 1b by means of hinge 2. The fixed comb 1a has in its axis a longitudinal hollow space which space serves as housing for the guiding rod 3, a part of which rod is grooved as in 4, these grooves acting frictionally on the lower surface of the blade-carrier S, the blade-carrier 5 being movable within guides provided in the fixed comb 1a. The rotary movement of the rod 3 is commanded by a grooved wheel 6 which is fixed to the rod 3 and which wheel protrudes on both sides from the handle 1. The mobile (sliding) plate 5 carries a safety razor blade 7, the openings in which blade being placed over corresponding knobs on the blade-carrier 5.
When lowered over blade 7, the mobile double comb 1b is held in position by a U-shaped chrome-plated steel spring 8, the two prongs of which spring are slidingly engaged over two corresponding grooves made in the upper and the lower parts of the double comb.
The device as described is symmetrical with regards to its longitudinal axis III-III (Fig. l). The distance between the bases of vthe teeth of the doub le combs is slightly inferior to the width of the blade, so that when the blade is placed within the centre of the comb, the two cutting edges of the blade protrude slightly on both sides beyond the bases of the teeth. In thisposition the device will cut the hair slightly in either direction. To obtain a longer cut` of hairs, 'the blade is moved downward correspondingly by operating the commanding wheel 6 using the index finger and thumb of the hand in which the device is held.
When it is desired to use the device as a razor, the blade is moved downward as far as it will go, the bladecarrier in this position being arrested by either the left or the right side teeth in the lower double comb (the non-mobile double comb 1a). In this position the cutting edge of the blade protrudes slightly (just the distance required for proper shaving) from beyond the teeth of the mobile double comb. To shave, this mobile part of the comb is used towards the face. To avoid the possibility of the teeth of the fixed double comb 1a protruding beyond the shaving edge of the blade, scratching the face while shaving, the elastic teeth-protecting shield 9 may be slid over these longer 'teeth of comb 1a, leaving the teeth of the mobile comb 1b, the one that faces the face while shaving, uncovered (Fig. 4). This shield 9 has longitudinal openings 9a, these openings allowing the escape of soap and hair particles when the device is used as a razor.
With the safety razor blade removed, the device may be used as an ordinary comb.
In practice, the details of construction, dimensions, form, materials used, etc., may be made to vary without such variations affecting the intention of the present invention. For example, instead of the U-shaped spring, any other system of holding the two combs together may be used, a spring closure etc. for instance. The hollow handle may be used as a repository for blades etc. The device may be manufactured to accommodate a bladecarrier double the length of the ordinary safety razor blade, so that two such blades may be used longitudinally. The device may be so designed and made as to accommodate blades of dimensions and shapes different from those in actual commerce.
Having described our invention as in the foregoing, we make the following claims:
1. A combination haircutter and razor comprising an elongated comb, an elongated swingable comb section hinged to said comb for swinging movement about a transverse axis to and from parallel relation with said comb, a blade cartier extending lengthwise of said swingable comb section and guided for transverse sliding adjustment on said section, a friction roller supported in said comb independently of said swingable section for rotation about a longitudinal axis, said swingable section being movable to position said carrier parallel to and in frictional engagement with said roller, so that rotary movement of the roller will produce transverse adjustment of said carrier.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said roller is proportioned and positioned to engage the blade carrier adjacent its opposite ends to cause and maintain equal transverse adjustment of its opposite end portions.
3. The combination of claim l including a shield slidable longitudinally onto said comb and having a portion extending -around the ends of the teeth of said comb, said portion defining a smooth exterior surface for engagement with the users face when shaving.
