1 Claim. (Cl. 160-367) The present invention relates to improvements in installation of window-screens, and has for its object to provide a device for adapting window-screens, particularly metal window-screens, to be standardized in size.
In the trade, where window-screens are sold retail, it is the custom, when the window-screens are sold, to send a workman to the home or place of business of the customer, and the workman fits the screens to the lateral size of the opening in the window-frame. This custom is necessitated by the fact that the lateral dimension between the inside surfaces of the screen-runners varies with the variation in lateral dimensions of the window-frame openings.
My improved window-screen device will be more clearly understood by reference specifically to the accompanying specification and drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of a window-frame and window-screen to which the device of my invention is applied, Fig. 2 is a partial section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is an isometric view of a portion of one of my window-screen devices, and Fig. 4 is a modification thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a windowframe in entirety is represented at 1, and this windowframe is comprised of what is identified in the art as facia boards, 2, 3 and 4. The sill of the window-frame is shown at 5. The window-frame, as is well known, has an opening which, in the drawing, is filled by top window 6, and screen 7. The opening usually varies in its lateral dimension due to the fact that the manufacture of the window-frame 1, is not a precision job. Hence, the distance between the inside channels or runs of the windowframe varies, and the conventional screens purchased from the distributor or retailer seldom fits properly into these channels, the screen, when inserted into the window-runs or channels, being either too tight or too loose. It becomes necessary therefore, to send out a workman from the supplier to the place of installation to properly fit the screens to the window-frame.
I have, therefore, devised a means for enabling the window-screen supplier to stock screens of standard lateral dimensions, and metal screens are best adapted for the purpose, as they are non-hygroscopic and. non-warping.
My device is best illustrated in Fig. 2 and in Fig. 3, wherein a single screen-run 8, is provided comprised of side-walls 9, 9', forming a channel 10, therebetween. The device may be fabricated from any suitable metal, such as aluminum, and bent to form a flange 11, adapted to be secured to the facia boards by nailing thereto, as illustrated in the sectional view, Fig. 2. In the latter figure one side-member 12, of screen 7, is shown as being inserted in channel 10, of my improved screen-run.
Referring to Fig. 4, which illustrates a modification of my invention, one of the walls 9, which forms channel 10, of the screen-run is preferably cut away for ease of insertion and withdrawal of the window-screen, it, of course, being understood that a pair of these improved screenruns is used, one on each side of the window-frame, and in this modification back-wall 8, of the run is bent backward at the top 13, to close the opening between sidewall 9, and flange 11, to prevent the entrance of insects into channel 10. Flange 11, is securely fastened to the facia board by means of nails 14. Bottom rail 15, of window-frame 6, closes the uppermost portion of the opening against the entrance of said insects at that location.
It will thus be seen by the above disclosure and by reference to the drawingsflhat I have provided a device which eliminates the difficulties hereinbefore experienced in the installation of conventional window-screens, and one which has a twofold accomplishment, viz. that the customer can install the window-screens himself without the need of any particular mechanical skill, and that the supplier can stock standard sizes of metal screens.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
An article of manufacture comprising a runner adapted to receive a window screen, the runner comprising two side walls and a back wall, the back wall having a relatively wide flange with respect to the width of the back wall and bent at a substantially right angle to the latter, and said back wall bent backward at its top to provide a top closure for the channel formed by the side and back walls.
