SEPARABLE BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,279, dated June 12, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM N. ROWE, a

- citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of separable buttons in which the button proper is de tachably connected with an independent shank by means of a spring-catch.

The object of my improvement is to provide the detachable button with a strong, du; rable, and simple form of spring-catch, which can be operated so as to unlock the button from its shank by pressing inwardly upon one end of the catch which projects from the edge of the button. To such end I construct and arrange a spring-catch or locking device for the button, as illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the button with the parts connected together. Fig. 2 represents the button and shank detached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken centrally through the button. Fig. 4 is a section taken on a horizontal plane through the button, above its inclosed spring-catch.

Aindicates the shell of the button, which is composed of two parts or sections, stamped or struck up in a die or spun from sheet metal,'as may be preferred; The lower or under part, a, of the button is formed with special reference to the spring-catch, which is seated and arranged to work therein, while the top part or section, a, which is fitted-to the lower section, is in the nature of a cap or cover for the same. The part a consists of a disk provided with an annular vertical flange, B, around its edge, and the cap a has a marginal flange, which fits upon the flange of the said lower section of the button. This precise mode of uniting the two sections of the button might be somewhat varied, that shown, however, being simple and effective.

0 indicates the shank with which the button is to be detachably connected. This shank is made rigid with .a disk, D, and is provided with amortise or slot, E, with which the springcateh engages when the button and the shank are united. The spring-catch F consists of a flat plate having at one end afinger, F, which projects through an opening in the edge of the button, and having at its opposite end a slot, f, in which a pin, 1', secured to the disk of the lower part, a, of the button, is secured, whereby the said plate is guided when moved upon the disk upon which it rests. The said plate of this spring-catch is provided with. a central slot, G, which is formed so as to come over the central opening, H, in the lower part of the button, and at one end of said slot is a eatcl1- finger, K, designed to enter the slot in the shank after the latter has been passed into the button through the opening, which is formed in the disk of its lower part or section.

The spring L consists simply of a curved spring plate or wire, arranged within thelower part of the button, and having one end secured to the said part ofthe button and its free end engaged with the sliding catch-plate, -so as to cause the finger on the outer end of the plate to normally projcct'out from the edge of the button, and the catch-finger K to lie across the opening through the center of the lower part of the button, so as to engage the shank and hold it in connection with the button until it I is desired to disconnect the two.

To detach the button from the shank it will only be necessary to press inwardly upon the finger of the catch, which projects laterally from the edge of the button, whereby the catch will be pushed against the spring resistance and be disengaged from the shank, thereby allowing the shank to be withdrawn from the button.

Havingthus described my invention, what I claim. is

' 1. The combination, with a disk having a mortised shank, of the button-sl1ell provided with a central opening in its lower portion for receiving the shank and inclosing a springcatch, F, consisting of a longitudinally-slotted plate provided at one end with a finger projecting through the edge of thebutton-shell, at its opposite end having a slot in which a pin secured to the button-shell is received, and at its middle providedvwith a catch-finger extending into its slot and normally held in position across the central opening in the button IOC by means of a spring, L, said members being constructed and adapted for operation sub stantially as described.

2. The combination, in a separable button, of the disk provided with a shank adapted to be engaged by the spring-catch of the buttonshell composed of the two parts a and a, the slotted springeateh F, inclosed within the but ton-shell, and provided with a finger, F, at one end, a slot, f, receiving a fixed pin at its opposite end, a catch-finger, K, for engaging the shank, and a spring, L, which causes the f n-7,. ger at one end of the button to be projected out from the edge of the button-shell, the said part a of the button-shell being composed of a 15 flat disk having a central opening and an annular marginal flange, and constituting a seat for the spring-catch, substantially as described.
