United States Patent 2,791,011 DRAIN TROUGl-i CQNSTRUCTIGN Hcrmanus A. Heep, Utrecht, Netherlands Application May 12, 1955, Serial No. 597,925 Claims priority, application Netherlands May 15, 1954 3 Claims. (Cl. 20- 70) This invention relates to a device for collecting and draining off water of condensation from windows, glass doors and the like, the said device comprising a profilated strip of material having in cross-section substantially the form of a double U, a receptacle for receiving the water of condensation being formed on one side of the middle leg and a space for receiving the pane of glass being present on the other side of the said leg, at draining-off system for the water of condensation being arranged below the pane of glass. In this manner the water of condensation flowing down along the pane of glass is prevented from coming into contact with the sills or cross lathe of window sash or doors equipped with such a device.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that in the space for receiving the pane of glass a horizontal partition is arranged between the middle and one outer leg of the profilated strip of material in such a manner that a sheath-like space is formed communicating with the receptacle for the water of condensation and with the atmosphere. The device according to the invention offers the advantage that the inner and outer painting have a longer durability and the water of condensation cannot damage any more the painting of the sills of window sashes. Wooden window sash cross members, pins, etc. do not rot any more due to the detrimental influence of the water of condensation and swinging window sash do not get stuck any more due to freezing. The receptacle may communicate, below the horizontal partition, through a plurality of holes with the atmosphere. This reduces the draught considerably as the air entering through the holes due to a gust of wind is met by the air contained in the sheath-like space so that the latter serves as a butter or expansion space. Moreover, a gust of wind cannot drive the water back into the space because the water can be taken up by this space. This space then serves as a temporary reservoir for the water of condensation. When the gust of wind has passed, the water may flow away through the holes communicating with the atmosphere. If desired, the pane of glass may be supported over the entire bottom side by the upper face of the horizontal When using an elastic strip or tube, for ex ample of rubber or some elastic artificial material, this strip or tube may also rest on the upper face of the horizontal partition so that said strip or tube may be disposed more easily and is positioned quite straight.
A preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention is characterized in that the outermost part of the portion of the profilated strip of material forming the receptacle is higher than the middle part. in this way a second butter space is formed for the air entering through the drain openings so that the incoming air is distributed over substantially the entire lower end of the pane of glass. As the pane of glass has been placed in a separate space, an unimpeded ventilation may take place as this ventilation is not hampered by means supporting the glass pane.
The invention will be described below with reference to the drawings showing by way of example an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in perspective, part of a window sash equipped with said device.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. l.
The device shown in the drawing is arranged on the sill .i' atented May 7, 1957 1 of a window sash 2 by means of screws not shown. This device comprises a profilated strip of material having in cross-section substantially the form of a double U and being closed at its front ends. It is of such a length that it fits between the vertical uprights of the Window sash. At the bottom side of the profilated strip of material there is a space 3 which is filled up with soft putty or the like. When the screws (not shown) are tightened the bottom side of the strip of material is firmly pressed into this putty thus ensuring a good water-tight sealing of this place of attachment.
Between the middle leg 4; and the leg 5 situated at the outside of the window sash a horizontal partition 6 is provided so that a space 7 is formed which communicates with the atmosphere through a plurality of holes 8. This space also communicates through a plurality of holes 9 with a space it between parts 4 and 11 of the strip of material, said space serving as a receptacle and being closed at its ends by a portion 12 transverse to the strip of material. it may be seen from the drawings that the part 11 of the strip of material is higher than the middle part 4.
The space between the parts 4 and 5 engages the lower end of the glass pane 13. Between this glass pane and the leg 5 a flexible tube 14 of artificial material is provided. The glass pane is fastened in the three remaining window sash grooves in the usual manner using putty.
The horizontal partition 6 has openings 15 through which any water entering between the window pane and the parts 4 and 5 may flow into the space '7.
It is obvious that the invention is not restricted to the device as described above and shown by way of example in the drawing, but that it may be modified in several ways without departing from the scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. A device for collecting and draining off condensation water from window sashes and the like, comprising a profilated strip of material of a double U-shape'd crosssectional shape and including a bottom wall adapted to be fixed on the sill of a window sash and three vertical walls upstanding from the bottom wall, said vertical walls being spaced apart and including an inner, a middle and an outer wall, said vertical walls defining side by side chambers, the chamber between the inner wall and the middle wall receiving the water of condensation and the chamber between the middle and the outer walls receiving the lower edge portion of a pane of glass, said last chamber being further defined by a horizontal partition disposed between the mdidle and outer walls and spaced above the bottom wall of the strip, a flexible strip adapted to seat on the partition and bear against the outer Wall and the lower edge portion of the pane to wedge the edge portion tightly against the middle wall, said partition having vertical openings, said middle wall and outer wall having horizontal openings below the partition and said vertical Walls being connected at their ends by vertical end walls which close off the ends of the chambers.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said inner vertical wall is higher than the middle wall.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said bottom Wall is of channel shaped construction and has depending legs which provide a closed space adapted to be filled with putty or the like to provide a water tight seal between the strip and the sill of the sash.
