The precise construction of the parts above named is pointed out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the bowl of a water-closet, which may be constructed of earthenware or of any other material suitable for the purpose, and which is provided with a discharge-valve, B, in one side, near its bottom, while it connects at the opposite side, near its top, with the flushing-pipe O. O is the overflow-pipe. The valve B is secured to a rock-shaft, D, which has its bearings in the sides of the valve-chamber E, and extends through one side thereof a sufiicient distance to make room for a lever, F. The outer end of this lever extends through a slot, (1, in the lifting-rod G, (see Fig. 4,)and is provided with a weight, I), which has a. tendency to keep the valve B closed.
The flushing-pipe Ccommunicates with the water-supply pipe H by a valve, I, which may be termed the flushing-valve, and which is situated in the valvechamber J and closes up against its seat c by the action of the weighted lever K. This lever has its fulcrum on a pivot, 11, and it connects at one end with the stem c of the flushing-valve I, while its opposite end extends through a slot, f, in the lifting-rod, and is provided with a weight, 9. Between its pivot d and weight g the lever K is connected rod is raised by its handle 7; the discharge' valve B of the bowl and tl'ie'flushing-valve I are opened and the matter contained in the pan is washed out, while at the same time the air-cushioning piston L is raised up in the cyl inder M. \Vhen the lifting-rod is permitted to drop the discharge-valve B is immediately closed by the combined action of the weight b on the lever F and the weight 7' on the liftingrod; but the flushing-valve I remains open for a short time after the discharge valve has closed, because the lever K is supported by the air-cushioning piston L, and the slot f in tlie lifting-rod is of such a length that the weight j of said lifting-rod does not bear upon the lever K. The air-cushioning piston is slowly depressed by the weight g of the lever K, while the air from the lower portion of the cylinder M escapes through the opening or openings '1'. During this period of time the flusl'iing-valve I remains open, and the required quantity of water flows into the pan before said valve closes.
The valvechamber E, which contains the discharge-valve B, is provided with a bottom flange, I, which is secured to the flange m of the siphon-trap I by screws 91. In the interior of the valve-chamber is formed a recess, 0, to receive a surrounding flange on the valve seat Q, which is fastened by screws (1 passing through its flange. Between the inner surface of this flange and the breast of the pan is formed a putty'joint, r. The rear portion of the pan rests upon a cup-shaped support, S, which is fastened to ears 8 on the siphon-trap I, while the front portion of said bowl is provided with downwa (Hy-projecting flange t, which rests upon the flange l of the valve chamber. On the siphon-trap P is formed a shoulder, a, and between this shoulder and the flange t is inserted a wedge, T, by preference of wood. By driving this wedge in, the breast of the bowl is drawn up tight against the face of the valve-chamber, the putty joint 1 serving to prevent leakage. Bythese means the bowl can be very readily adjusted in position, and it can also be readily removed whenever it becomes desirable.
The dischargevalve B is constructed of two disks, 0 and w, the disk vbeing firmly mounted on the rock-shaft D, while the disk w is connected to the disk 11 by a screw, a, passing through its center. On its inner surface said disk w is provided with a rim, 2/, and with an annular rib, e, and inside of this annular rib is placed a gasket, (1, of elastic rubber or other equivalent mz'tterial. By tightening up the screw (1 the gasket (1 is compressed to such an extent that the disk is firmly retained in position; but I do not screw up the screw (1 suificientlv tight to cause the rim I) of the disk In to bear firmly all around against the inner surface of the disk 1*, so that in closing the valve B the disk :0 can yield and accommodate itself to the valve-seat Q, the weightj on the lifting-rod and weight I) on the lever F acting upon the valve B with. sufficient pressure to produce the desired effect.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a water-closet, the combination of the siphon-trap P, provided with the flange m and lateral earss, the cup shaped saddle S, detachably connected with the ears of the siphon-trap, the valvcchamber E, having a bottom flange, detachably connected with the flange of the trap, and the bowl A, joined at its breast end to the "alvcchamber, and at its other end rcstiiig in the cup-shaped saddle, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the siphon-trap l? and valve-chamber E, detachably connected together, and the trap having a shou1der, w, with the bowl A, provided with a flange, 2, a putty joint, r, at the breast of the bowl, and a Wedge, T,,arranged between the shoulder on the trap and the flange on the bowl, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' 3. The combination, with the bowl A, valve chamber E, and valve-seat Q, all detachably united, of the shaft D, extending through the valve-chamber, the valve B, hung on said shaft and composed of two disks and an interposed elastic gasket, the inner disk resting 011 the valve-seat, the weighted lever F, attached to the shaft of the valve outside the valve-chamber, and the lifting-rod G, connected with the lever, substantially as described.

The combination, substantially as herein described, of the pan A, the valve-chamber E, containing the discharge-valve B, the rockshaft D, the lever F, extending through a slot in the lifting-rod G, the flushing-valve I, the air-cushioning piston L, and the lever K, connected to the flushing-valve and to the aircushioning cylinder and extending through a long slot in the lifting rod and the flushing pipe.
