Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOMURTRY, OF FAYETTE COUNTY, ASSIGNOR' TO- FARMER DEWEES,
, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVED MODE 0F SECURING METAL HOOPS 0N COTTON-SALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,866. dated April l0, 1860.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN MGMURTRY, of the county of Fayette, in the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Mode of liIaking Fastenings or Ties to Metal Hoops or Bails for Cooperage and the Baling of Cotton, Hemp, &c.5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. The nature of my invention consists in making a bend on each end of the met-al hoop or bail at such an angle that when those are hooked together and their ends bent under toward the inside of the hoop or bail, it4
. will form a fastening or tie equal in strength to any other portion of the hoop or bail.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
With a simple machine I bend the ends of the hoop or bail at an angle of sixty degrees, as shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, signed by me and forming a part of this specification. I'then hook the ends together, as shown in Fig. 3 of the accompanying draw- Rnissun ings. I then bend both ends under on the inside of the hoop or bail, as shown in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings.
Fig. l represents a bale of hemp or cotton with two of my metal bails fastened or tied as above described. Figs. 2 and 3 represent the different operations of making the fastening or tie as above described.
The letters of reference on the several parts traced in the different figures Will, it is believed, give a clear idea of the nature of the invention.
As above remarked, I make the bends on the ends of the metal hoop or bail at an angle of sixty degrees, as this is the only angle that Will bring the sides of the hoop or bailA straight with each other Without trimming the ends of the hoop or bail, which trimming is troublesome and expensive.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bending of the ends of metal hoops or bails, substantially as described above, for the purpose of making the fastening of the ends of same, as shown'in the accompanying drawings, for the purposes set forth.
Witnesses: JOHN MGMURTRY.
J oHN C. HANsBEo, 'Isaac Cook.
