2 Claims. (Cl. -31) The invention herein disclosed is a hassock and bed construction, convertible from one into the other.
Objects of the invention are to provide such a structure in a form which can be quickly and easily converted from a hassock into a bed, or from the bed back into the hassock, and which will be of simple, sturdy, low cost construct-ion.
Particularly it is a purpose of the invention to counterbalance the parts so that only slight effort will be required to effect the conversion from one article of furniture to the other, and to coordinate the parts so that the folding and unfolding operations can be effected in practically a single, continuous, uninterrupted operation.
Other desirable objects and the novel features through which the purposes of the invention are attained are set forth and will appear in the course of the following specification.
The drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrate a present practical embodiment of the invention but structure may be modified and changed as regards the immediate illustration, all within the true intent and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure in the folded, hassock forming condition;
Figs. 3 and 4 are side views illustrating the opening or unfolding operation;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the parts completely opened out into the bed forming relation.
In Fig.- l the hassock forming body of the device is designated 9. It is shown as having a top cushion 14 and it will be appreciated that thi may have a slip cover or the like.
The remaining figures show the base structure as made up of an open rectangular frame into which can be lowered the inner mattress frame 11 which is hingedly connected to the outer or upper mattress frame 12, the two carrying the double, folding mattress 13 which is of full bed length.
The hassock cushion 14 is secured to the opposite side of the outer mattress frame 12, and this may be slightly tapered in thickness, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, to stand horizontally when the hassock is closed, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the extended, full length bed position shown in Fig. 5, the outer frame 12 is supported by legs 15 which are lowered by pivoted links 16.
The headboard 17 is hinged at its lower edge to the back of the inner mattress frame 11 and is raised from position between the doubled mattress sections by toggle links 18, 19 and pull links 20.
The inner end of the inner mattress frame 11 is raised by toggle links 21, 22.
Elbow links 25 guide the inner mattress frame laterally in its raising and lowering movements and links 26, 27, pivotally connected together and to the links 23, preserve proper spacing of the opposing ends of the two mattress frames.
The pull links 19 for straightening the headboard raising toggle levers 18, 20, are shown connected with the intermediate pivots of those toggle levers at 31, and the ends of the upper toggle levers 18 are shown pivotally connected with the headboard at 32, above the hinge 52. Links 19 are pivotally connected at their opposite ends with frame 11, at 33. The frame lifting toggle levers 21, 22 are pivotally connected at their upper and lower ends with mattress frame 11 and base 10, at 34 and 35.
The toggle raising push links 30 are connected with the actuating levers 29, at 36.
The short links 23 are shown pivotally connected with the inner mattress frame at 37, and the elbow links 25 are shown pivotally connected with this same frame at 38.
The bars 24 connecting the two mattress frames are shown pivotally connected with the inner mattress frame at 39 and the leg lowering bars 16 are shown connected with bars 24, at 40. Bars 24 are pivotally connected at their opposite ends to the outer mattress frame 12, at 41.
The pivotal connections of links 27 with the upper mattress frame are designated 42.
The rocking links 25 and 28 are pivotally mounted on the base frame at 43, and links 28 are pivotally connected with the upper mattress frame at 44.
The drag links 16 are shown pivotally connected with the legs 15, at 45, and the latter are pivotally mounted on the upper mattress frame at 46. Lugs 47 on the sides of the legs 15 serve as stops for the links 16, preventing the legs from pivoting past a dead center position which might lock the legs against unfolding, as will be clear from Fig. 2.
The center hinge points of the lifting toggles 21, 22 are designated 48 and pivotal connections between links 23 and 26 are designated 49, and those between links 26, 27, as 50.
51 designates a brace connecting and holding the sides of the inner mattress frame 11 in spaced parallel relation.
What is claimed is:
1. A folding bed and hassock construction comprising an open center base frame of approximate hassock outline, two coextensive mattress frames hingedly connected together in end-to-end relation and foldable one over the other into said base frame, hinge bars pivoted at opposite ends to adjoining end portions of said mattress frames and providing the hinge connection therebetween adapted to maintain said frames in substantially spaced parallel relation when folded down in the base, a full length mattress pad coextensive with said mattress frames and foldable at the center between said hinge bars connecting the mattress frames in spaced relation, toggle levers connected between said base frame and the inner end of the lower mattress frame and arranged when straightened to lift said mattress frame in the base, elbow levers pivoted on the base and pivotally connected with the inner end of the upper mattress frame and arranged to swing outwardly and downwardly when the upper mattress frame is raised and unfolded, said elbow levers having leverage extensions projecting downwardly into the base 3 frame in the folded position of the parts, push links extending from said leverage extensions to the midpoints of said toggle levers whereby on lifting the upper mattress frame said toggle levers will be straightened to raise the inner end of the lower mattress frame, a headboard pivoted at the inner end of the lower mattress frame in position to fold down over that part of the mattress pad located thereon, toggle levers connected between said mattress frame and headboard and arranged when straightened to lift the headboard to upright position, push links extending from the center pivots of the first mentioned toggle levers to the center points of said headboard raising toggle levers to thereby effect lifting of the headboard when the lower mattress frame is raised, links pivotally connected between the base and the outer end of the lower mattress frame for guiding and sustaining said end when the mattress frames are raised and unfolded, legs pivoted to the outer end portions of the upper mattress frame and push-pull links pivotally 0011- nected between said legs and said hinge bars and arranged to lower the legs as the upper mattress frame is swung upward and outward to extended position and to raise said legs as said upper mattress frame is folded upwardly and swung downwardly over the folded headboard and lower mattress frame.
2. The invention according to claim 1, in which said folding legs of the upper mattress frame are provided with lugs engageable with said push-pull links intthe fully folded condition of the parts to prevent movement of the legs past locking dead center.
