When a furnace of this type is tilted, the discharge opening travels in the horizontal direction for a distance that the ladle, into which the furnace is to be emptied, must follow. Attempts have been made to avoid this disadvantage by providing the axis of tilting in the discharge opening or in the vicinity thereof. However, when the furnace is mounted in this manner, considerable forces are required for tilting, because the centre of gravity of the furnace must then move upwardly.
According tothe invention, a tilting device is provided in which, while the furnace is tilted with little elfort, the discharge opening travels'only such a short distance that the ladle need not be moved.
According to the invention, the device includes a rocker which, when the furnace is tilted, rolls off on an advantageously horizontal track. In this construction of tilting device, the centre of gravity moves substantially horizontally.
One construction of furnace according to the invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of alternative driving means.
1 is the rotary furnace which is rotatable about its axis on the rollers 2 and which is secured against axial displacement by the rollers 3, which bear against the outer walls of rings 3a of rectangular section, which are applied in spaced relation around the furnace 1. Mounted on each side of the frame supporting the rollers is an arcuate moon shaped rocker member 4, which is adapted to roll off on a horizontal track 5. The radius of curvature of the rocker member 4 and the position of the tilting axis relatively to the furnace axis are so selected that, when the furnace is tilted, its discharge opening 1a travels a minimum distance in the horizontal direction, the centre of gravity being horizontally displaced. The rocker member 4 and/or the track 5 are provided with teeth 6, which serve to prevent the rocker member from slipping or sliding on the track. Each rocker member 4 is provided, at positions spaced apart, with three projections 7, 8 and 9, over which is passed a chain 10 which is secured to the projection 8, and in which is engaged the pulley 11 of hoisting gear 11a for effecting the tilting movement. When the furnace is to be emptied and moved into the position shown in dot and dash lines, it is lifted by operation of the hoisting gear 25, so that the rocker member 4 rolls over the track 5. The hoisting gear 25 must then follow this direction of movement along a track 13a, and assumes the position denoted by the dot and dash line 11a. As may be seen in the drawing, the discharge opening 1a of the furnace travels only for a short distance in the horizontal direction when the furnace carries out this movement, so that the metal tlowing out of the furnace passes into the stationary ladle 12 in any position of the furnace.
In one particular construction of the invention the part 5a of the track, on which the furnace rests in the horizontal position, is mounted to be rotatable about a vertical axis which intersects the axis of the furnace. In this manner it is possible to turn the furnace horizontally so as to empty it in any direction by tilting. For this purpose, the chain 10 extends from the projection 7 to the projection 9, so that the lifting gear may engage at one time in the one end of the chain, and at another time in the other end of the chain. In addition, due to the furnace being provided to be rotatable about a vertical axis, it is possible to change the tiring position of the furnace. Furthermore, the furnace may be moved in this m-anner into different positions, for example into the position in which it is charged, repaired and red. As the furnace travels horizontally upon tilting, it may thus be moved in a simple manner from the chargingand melting-hall into the casting-hall.
Instead of a hoisting gear, other driving means such as hydraulically-operated tension and compression rods may also be used for tilting the furnace.
v Such driving means is shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
A piston 15 is displaceable in a cylinder 14 which is rotatable about an intermediate axis 13. The piston rod 15a carries at its top-end a roller 15b, which is guided in a horizontal curved slot 4a. The slot 4a is provided in a support disposed on the rocker member. The piston rods 16a and 17a of the piston 16 and 1'7 respectively, moving in rotatably mounted cylinders 18 and 19, can also act on the roller 15b. The pressure chambers in the cylinders are in communication with the piston rod 15a, which is of tubular section and open at the bottom, by means of flexible pipe-lines 20 and 21, controlled by stop- cocks 22 and 23.
When the furnace is to be tilted, water or any other hydraulic means--which, when the stop- cocks 22 and 23 are closed, can act only on the piston 15 to cause the tilting movement through the piston rod 15a and the roller 15b-is forced under pressure into the cylinder 14, so that the rocker assumes the position shown in dotted lines.
When the furnace is to be tilted in the opposite direction, and for this purpose is turned through about a vertical axis, the position at which the roller 15b engages must be displaced. For this purpose the stop-cock 22 is opened, so that the pressure means, before being able to move the piston 15, displaces the piston 16 by means of the hollow piston rod and the movable pipeline 20 to such an extent that the roller 15b strikes against the other end of the slot 4a, the resistance offered by the piston 16 to the pressure means at that position thus exceeding that of the piston 15, so that the piston 15 is displaced to cause the tilting movement of the furnace.
The cylinder 19 and the co-ordinated elements 17, 17a, 21 and 23 perform the same function as the cylinder 18 and the elements 16, 16a, 20 and 22; they serve to return the cylinder 14 into the position shown in full lines, if the direction of tilting of the furnace is to be changed.
We claim:
1. A tilting furnace comprising, in combination, a horizontally disposed container for the material to be treated; a framework on which said container is supported; rollers mounted in said framework, said rollers permitting rotation, of said contained within said supporting framework; a. pair of arcuateparallel rocker members on which. said framework is supported; parallel tracks over which said rocker members move in the tilting of the container from the horizontal position tothe vertical emptying-3 po.- sition;A andi means` for moving the rocker membersr to tilt the furnace, said last mentioned moving means includingy a pivoted cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder under hydraulic pressure, a connecting rod secured at one end to said piston, a roller secured to the other end of said connecting rod, a slotted member secured to said framework in which slot said roller is movable, and means for moving said roller intov one or other of the end positions in said slot according to the direction of tilt of the container.
2.y A tilting furnace comprising, in combination, a horizontally disposed container for the material to be treated; a framework on which said container is supported; rollers mounted in said framework, said rollers permitting rot-ation of said container within said supporting framework; a pair of arcuate parallel rocker members on which said framework is supported; parallel tracks over which said rocker members move in the tilting of the container from the horizontal position to the vertical emptying position; and means for moving the rocker members to tilt the furnace, said last mentioned moving means including a pivoted cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder under hydraulic pressure, a connecting rod secured at one end to said piston, a roller secured to the other end of said connecting rod, a slotted member secured to said framework in which slot said roller is movable, means for moving said roller into one or other of the end positions in said slot, according to the direction of tilt of the container, including cylinders pivotally mounted on said framework, pistons movable under hydraulic power in said cylinders, and rods .connecting said pistons to said rollers.
3. A tilting furnace comprising, in combination, a horizontally disposed container for. the material to. be treated; a framework on which said container is supported; rollers mounted insaid framework, said rollers permitting rotation of said container within said supporting framework; a pair of arcuate parallel rocker members on which said' framework is supported; parallel tracks over which said rocker members move in the tilting, of the. container from the horizontal position to. the verticak emptying position; and means for moving the rocker members. to, tiljt the, furnace, said-v last mentioned moving means including a pivoted cylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder under hydraulic pressure, a connecting rod securedat one end to said piston, a roller secured to the other endv of said connecting rod, a slotted member secured to said framework in which slot said roller is movable, means for moving' said roller into one or other of the end positions in said slot according to the direction of tilt of the furnace,y including cylinders pivotally mounted on said framework, pistons movable under hydraulic power in said cylinders, rods connecting said pistons to said rollers, and means for passingy hydraulic fluid to the piston cylinders for changing the direction of tiltV before itis passed to thel piston cylinder for tilting the container.
