Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QF ICE.
JOHANN FEIX, OF ALBREOHTSDORF, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
PRODUCTION OF ENAMELED OR METALLIZED GLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,014, dated April 1'7, 1883.
Application filed January 30, 1883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHANN FEIX, of Albrechtsdorf, Austria-Hungary, have invented improvements in the production of enameled and metallized glass and fictile ware in imitation of enameled-metal work; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the manufacture of a new product in imitation of enameled metal; and it consists in the combination of a body or support of glass, porcelain, ceramic, or other fictile ware with a metallic layer or film applied by. electro-deposition and an enameled decoration.
I am aware that it has before been proposed to apply the process of electro-deposition to the decoration of glass and porcelain, but only for the production of designs in gold or silver. It has never been applied to ordinary enameled articles of'which the enamel is attached by the galvanic baths, and the product of this invention has never heretofore been obtained.
In carrying out this invention I proceed as follows: I take, for example, a vase or other article of glass, porcelain, ceramic, or other tictile substance, and cover it with a layer either of platinum, nitrate of silver, graphite, or other analogous substance which is a condoctor of electricity. I then apply enamels, according to a design, in any suitable style, and fire them as in ordinary Work. The enamels should be hard enough to resist the action of acids and of the galvanic baths. It is unnecessary to here state the composition of the enamels, as they will vary with the nature (No specimens.)
and the color of the decoration to be produced, and the means whereby suffici'ently-hard enamels may be obtained is Within the common knowledge of enamelers. The article thus coated and enameled is then suspended in an acid or cyanide bath, wherein those portions not covered by the enamel and upon which the platinum or other previously-applied conductive layer is left exposed receive by electro-deposition a thick coat of metallic copper, zinc, or silver without loosening the enamel. This having been done, the desired aspect may now be imparted to the article by polishing, silvering, nickeling, or otherwise, thus producing objects of all kinds or shapes in perfect imitation of enameled-metal work, whether ancient or modern.
I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a fictile body covered with a non conductor of electricity, substantially as described, and containing above said covering a layer of enamel, as specified.
- 2. The process herein described 0t ornamenting fictile substances, which process consists in first covering such substance with a non-conductor of electricity, substantially as set forth, in then applying enamel thereon and firing it, and in then applying an elec: tro-deposit to the non-enameled part, all as described.
J OHANN FEIX.
