HAT-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,581, dated April 10, 1883.

' which device can be carried in the pocket and hung on chairs in theaters, churches, halls, 850., for the purpose of holding the hat.

The invention consists in making a hatholder of wire or a narrow strip of metal, in the form hereinafter described and claimed.

Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are perspective views, the former of my invention when made of wire and the latter when made of a narrow strip or plate of metal.

An endless piece of wire is bent to form a spring-hook, A, and then the wire is bentnpward at C from the lower end of one shank of the book A, and spring-coils B are formed by each strandof wire. From the said coils the wire extends downward about parallel with the part 0, extending upward from the shank of the hook, and the end of the downwardlyprojecting part is bent upward toward the part 0, projecting upward from the lower end of the hook-shank to form a hook, D, which is pressed against the upward-projecting part 0 by the spring-coils B. The two strands of wire, whichare parallel throughout, are separated a short distance and are braced and stiffened by. one or more cross-pieces, E, of wire, or by a wire cross-piece, E, and a cross-plate, F. The wire strands are also stiffened by the free ends of the hooks A and D. The hook A is passed over the upper edge of the back of a chair in a theater, public hall, church, &c., or over the edge of some other suitable object, from which edge the hat holder will thus be suspended. It is held in place by the spring in the wire. The part 0 and the hook D will then be on the back of the chair. The rim of the hat is placed between the part 0 and the hook D, which is pressed against the rim by the spring-coilsB, and the hook in turn presses the rim against the part 0. The hat will thus be suspended from the holder. The device is placed on the back of the chair in front of the person. The hat will thus be held in such a manner that it cannot be soiled or injured. If a person wishes to pass by the seat the hat and the holder can easily be removed from the back of the seat.

The device is small and compact and can easily be carried in the pocket.

The hat-holder can also be formed of a metal strip, if desired.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A portable hat-holder formed of a plate or two parallel wires connected by cross-bars, bent to form a spring-hook at each end on a separate back, and adapted to be used as described. I

2. The combination,with a wire bent to form a book, A, an upwardly-bent part, 0, springcoils B, and a hook, D, of one or more crosspieces, E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
