3 Claims. (Cl. 37--45) This invention relates to show shovels of the type adapted to be attached to the forward end of a motor vehicle and of the type having laterally traveling conveyors for carrying snow from a scraper blade to a side or sides of a roadway, and in particular a scraper having a horizontal conveyor and a vertically positioned conveyor providing a L-shaped trough whereby snow scraped by the scraper is carried to the side or to sides of a roadway with horizontal and vertically positioned conveyors.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for rapidly carrying snow of a scraper or snow plow away from the scraping elements without the snow sticking to side surfaces of a conveyor trough or the like.
With the conventional type of snow shovel where snow is carried to the sides of a roadway with conveyors the snow is deposited upon a conveyor belt or section in a trough and means is required for preventing the snow sticking to sides of the trough above or at the sides of the conveying elements. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a snow conveying trough formed with a plurality of conveyor belts whereby stationary elements positioned to hold snow are removed from the path of snow traveling from a scraper blade.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting a plurality of conveyors in combination with a scraper blade whereby snow scraped by the blade drops into a complete traveling trough with the bottom and one side of the trough positioned to carry snow from the blade to the side of a roadway upon which the snow shovel is traveling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a snow shovel adapted to be attached to a motor vehicle and means whereby conveyors of the snow shovel are driven by a power take off of the vehicle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a snow shovel wherein snow from a scraping blade is deposited into a traveling trough in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other features and advantages in view the invention embodies a substantially L-shaped frame having a horizontal and a vertical section with conveyor belts journaled at the ends and positioned to travel over the horizontal and vertical sections, a scraper blade positioned to feed snow and the like to the conveyors, means for mounting the L-shaped frame on a motor vehicle and means for driving the conveyors from the power take off of the vehicle.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a motor vehicle having a scraping blade in combination with traveling conveyors carried by the forward end thereof.

Figure 6 is a cross section taken on line 66 of Fig. 1 showing a sliding connection between the frame of the snow shovel and vehicle whereby the angle of the scraper and conveyors may be adjusted in relation to the axis of the vehicle.
Figure 7 is an end elevational view showing the scraper and conveyor and illustrating the scraping blade at the discharge end of the conveyor belt.
Figure 8 is a modification showing a plan view, similar to that shown in Fig. 1 showing a device with a snow removing unit positioned on each side of the center whereby snow is carried by conveyors to both sides of a highway or the like.
Figure 9 is a longitudinal section taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 8 illustrating the mounting of the scraper and conveyor elements on the forward end of a motor vehicle.
Figure 10 is a section taken on line 1010 of Fig. 8 illustrating the transmission element at one side of the vehicle.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved snow remover of this invention includes a scraper blade 10 carried by an L-shaped frame having a horizontal section 11 and a vertical section 12 a belt conveyor 13 mounted on the horizontal section 11, a vertically positioned conveyor belt 14 mounted on the vertical section 12 of the frame, scraper blades 15 and 16 positioned to remove snow from the conveyor belts at the discharge end of the conveyor trough, a mounting yoke 17 for pivotally connecting the frame to an arm 18 extended from the vehicle, a similar yoke 19 for adjustably connecting the frame to a socket 20 on the vehicle and a power take off shaft 21 having universal joints 22 and 23 therein for connecting the driving means of the conveyors to a power take off shaft 24 of the vehicle. 7 e
The scraper blade 10 is formed as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 with a back 25 and supporting ribs 26 and the blade is secured to the horizontal section 11 of the frame by bolts 27 that extend through a tongue 28 positioned against the lower surface of the section 11. It will be understood that the scraper blade may be of any suitable size of shape and it may be mounted on the frame by suitable means.
The conveyor belt 13 is mounted on pulleys 29 and 30 which are journaled by shafts 31 and 32, respectively, in bearings 33, extended downwardly from the section 11 of the frame and the shaft 32 is provided with a beveled gear 34 that meshes with a beveled gear 35 on a shaft 36 on which a pulley 37, at one end of the conveyor belt 14 is mounted. The opposite end of the conveyor belt 14 is mounted on a pulley 38 which is journaled in bearings 39 and 40 at one end of the section 12 of the frame. The pulley 37 at the opposite end of the belt 14 is journaled in bearings 41 and 42 which are secured to the section 12 and the scraper blade 16 extends from the bearings 41 and 42, as shown in Fig. 3. V
The conveyors are driven from the power take off 24 through the connecting shaft 21 and through beveled gears 43 and 44, the gear 44 being positioned on a shaft 45 which is journaled in bearings 46 and 47 of a yoke 48 that is secured by bolts 49 in the section 12 of the mounting frame. A sprocket 50 mounted on the upper end of the shaft 45 is positioned to receive a chain 51 which is also trained over a sprocket 52 on the shaft 36 of the vertically positioned conveyor belt 14.
It will be understood that although the driving means of the conveyor includes a chain trained over sprockets, transmission elements of other types may be used and the parts may be connected by suitable means.
-With the parts arranged in this manner a hub 53 extended from the yoke 17 is pivotally mounted by a pin 54 on an arm 18 extended from a motor vehicle and with the arm of the yoke 19 extended through the socket 20, the angle of the scraper blade and conveyor trough may be adjusted by sliding the arm 55 in the socket. The arm 55 is clamped in the socket with a set screw 56 and the socket 20 is carried by an arm 57 extended from the vehicle.
The vertically disposed section 12 of the frame provides a backing plate supporting the belt 14 whereby snow thrown against the belt 14 is retained in position over the belt 13 and with both belts traveling at the same speed the snow is carried to the discharge end of the trough formed by the vertical and horizontal belts. The snow is removed from the belts by the scrapers 15 and 16.
In the design illustrated in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 the scraper blades 60 and 61 are positioned in the form of a V and a V-shaped element 62 at the center directs snow passing upwardly at the point of the blades toward the belts at the sides.
vIn this design horizontal belts 63 and 64 coact with vertically disposed belts 65 and 66, respectively to carry snow from the dividing elements 62 toward the discharge ends of the conveyors at the sides of the snow shovel.
In this design the endless belt conveyors 65 and 66 are journaled in vertically positioned backing plates 67 and 68, as shown in Fig. 9 and the plates 67 and 68 are supported from a mounting bracket 69 on the forward end of a vehicle 70 with braces 71 and 72, at the center, and 73 and 74, at the sides.
In this design a beveled gear 75 mounted on the extended end of a power take off shaft 76 of the vehicle meshes with a gear 77 on the vertically disposed shaft 78 which is journaled in bearings 79 and 80 on the braces 71 and 72, respectively.
The shaft 78 is provided with a sprocket 81 over which a chain 82 that is also trained over a sprocket 83 on a shaft 84, is trained and as shown in Fig. 8 a gear 85 on the shaft 84 meshes with a gear 86 on a shaft 87 which is journaled in bearings 88 and 89 and on which a pulley 90 of the conveyor 65 is mounted. A beveled gear 91 at the lower end of the pulley 90 meshes with a beveled gear 92 on a shaft 93 on which a pulley 94 of the conveyor 63 is mounted, the belt of the conveyor 63 being trained over the pulley 94 and also over a pulley 95 at the opposite end.
The pulleys of the conveyor 65 are mounted on vertically disposed shafts, with a pulley at one end on the shaft 87 and a pulley at the opposite end on a shaft 96 and the shafts are journaled on the frame with suitable bearings.
