Altadena, Calif.
Application March 3, 1950, Serial No. 147,446
This invention relates to the class of furniture and is directed particularly to a combined sofa and table structure.
A particular object of the present invention is to provide, in combination, a sofa structure and a foldable table, wherein the sofa is constructed with a recess or chamber in the arm and the table has foldable leaves and is designed, when 2 Claims. (Cl. 155-123) folded to be inserted into such recess, with apart of the table serving as a closure panel for the recess when the table is housed therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination structure of the character above set forth, wherein a novel mechanism is provided for latching or securing the folded table in the recess and for effecting its release and partial ejection therefrom, when desired for use.
Other objects and advantages of the inven- 2 tical closure or door panel 20 which fits in the opening I3 when the table is housed. This panel 20 additionally functions as a front leg, having its lower end extended for this purpose below the bottom rail I1, as shown in Figure 2. v
Cooperating with the bottom end of the panel 20, to support the back part of the table, is a provide the slot 23.
tion will become apparent as the description oftthe same proceeds and the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a view in perspective of a combination sofa and table constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the table drawn out and set-up for use.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the arm of the sofa, from the front to the rear, showin the folded table housed therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral I generally designates a sofa of a type having end arms II of full height and of substantial thickness.
In accordance with the present invention one of arms II, here shown as the right arm, is constructed in hollow form to provide a recess or chamber I2, and the front of the arm has an opening I3 through which the hereinafter described foldable table may be inserted and withdrawn.
The table is generally designated I4 and as shown comprises a vertical square body frame I5 consisting of the top and bottom horizontal rails I6 and I1 respectively and the front and rear vertical rails I8 and I9 respectively.
The front rail I8 has secured thereto the ver- The arm II also includes the top wall I21) and at its front end is a depending flange or lip I3a which forms the top edge of the opening I3.
The under face of the top wall I2b has formed therein the longitudinally extending guide groove 24.
Fixed to and upon the top of the center leaf 22, at the rear end thereof, is a guide lug 25 which slidably engages in the groove 24. The forward travel of this lug 25 in the groove 24, when the table is drawn out, is limited by the lip I3a.
Hinged to each side edge of the top center leaf, by hinges 26, is a wide drop leaf 21. These drop leaves are supported horizontally in the plane of the center leaf 22, each by a leg 28 which has rigidly secured to it at the top and bottom the arms 23 and 30 respectively. These arms are hinged to the top andbottom frame rails as at 3I to swing on a vertical axis whereby the leg may be closed against the side of the frame or swung outwardly therefrom as shown in Figure 1.
As shown in Figure 2 the depth of the chamber I2 is considerably greater than the length of the frame I5 so that when the table is within the chamber the back rail I9 is spaced from the back wall I20.
Secured to the back wall I2c just below the bifurcated end of the center leaf is a vertical g iide 32, through which extends the latch pin The top wall I2b, above the guide 32, has an opening 35, in which is located a button 36 which is carried upon the top end of the pin 34. The pin enters the slot 23 in the back end of the center leaf, as shown, when the table is housed.
Below the pin '34, the back wall I2c has chamber a downward pressur" 'l t k i rasped and the =-table" draw n but 'to the full eio v tent to permit the side leaves to be raisedfi" mounted thereon a bracket 31 to which is p-ivotis mounted on the leg 39 by the upwardly and 5 rearwardly inclined arm 4!. To urge this swinging of the bolt at all times, however, a spring 42 is connected between the leg 39 =andl-thelblfeq i 31 below the pivot as shown.
