Manufacturing Company, Framingham, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application'September 18, 1951, Serial No. 247,120 8 claims. (01. 101-318) 1 This invention relates to machines for printing price tickets and other articles and has for its objects a machine which is simple and economical in construction, which is easily and quickly adjjustable to tickets of different kinds and which is durable and reliable in operation.
The machine of the present invention comprises a type-carrying head for printing the ticket or other article, a platen for backing up the article while being printed, an inking pad, means for moving the head back and forth through long strokes in which the head and platen come together and alternately through short strokes in which the. head and pad meet, together with mechanism for producing relative movement between the pad and the head transversely of the aforesaid movement of the head so that the pad does not obstruct said long strokes, the headmoving means comprising a part oscillating about an axis and carrying adjusting screws located different distances from the axis so that they act on the head alternately, one at the end of the short stroke and the other at the end of the long stroke, so that the length of each stroke may be adjusted independently of the other with a single oscillating part. The mechanism for moving the inking pad back and forth between operative position and retracted position preferably includes a feeder for advancing the articles to be printed; the printer and pad moving back and forth together. In the preferred embodiment the head moves up and down, the pad and feeder move horizontally along a predetermined path and the axis of the oscillating part is parallel to the aforesaid path.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an end elevation showing the printing head in uppermost position and the ticket feeder and ink pad in advanced position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the parts in the same position; and
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in different positions, the head being shown in retracted position in Fig. 3, inking position in Fig. 4 and printing position in Fig. 5.
The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises a frame I, a vertical guide 2 mounted on the frame, a printing head 3 slidable up and down in a dovetail guideway in the guide 2, a printing chase 4 on the bottom of the head 3, a feed finger 6 for feeding a strip of tickets T under the printing head and an inking pad 1 for inking the type on the bottom of'the chase 4. The ticket strip T slides over a platen 8 mounted on the frame I and the strip is guided by guides 9 which overhang the edges of the strip. The inking pad I is mounted on a slide I l which slides on the ticket guides 9, the slide being guided by guides l2 mounted over theticket guides 9.
r The ticket feeding pawl 6 engages in perforations or notches in the ticket strip in the usual way to advance the strip a distance equal to the length of one ticket each time the pawl is moved from left to right (Fig. 2). The pawl 6 is pivotally mounted on the side of the upstanding rear end [3 of theslide Use that the ink-pad slide andfeed finger reciprocate back and forth together. ,These parts are actuated by a cam [4 through the medium of a cam follower I6, a
shaft ll, an arm I8 and an adjustable link 19,
theparts being yieldingly urged forwardly by a spring 2| which holds the cam follower it against the cam I74. V
The printing head 3 is yieldingly urged toward its uppermost position shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3 by means of spring 22. It is moved downwardly against theaction of this spring by means of a cam 23, a cam follower 24, a bell-crank 26 pivotally mountedin 21 and two screws 28 and 29 on the upper end of the bell-crank. The cam 23 has a low rise 3! to advance the printing head to its intermediateinking position and a higher rise 32 to move it all the way down to the printing position shown in Fig. 4. The bell-crank 26 engages the head only through the medium of the screws 28 and 29. The bell-crank is so shaped and the screws 28 and 29 are so adjusted that .only the screw 28 engages the head in the short inking stroke and only the screw 29 engages the head at the end of the printingstroke. Thus the length of the inking stroke may be adjusted 'by means of the screw 28 without effecting the printing stroke; and the printing: stroke can be adjusted by the screw 29 without effecting the lengthof the inking stroke. 7
- The cams I4 and 23 are so shaped and positioned that the sequence of operations'is as follows; While the inking pad is in the forward position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 under the printing head the rise 3| on cam 23' forces the chase of the printing head down against the inking'pad to ink the type. Then while the head is retracting to uppermost position and "starting down again the inking pad is Withdrawn .out of the path of the printinghead by meansof the rise on cam l4; and inasmuch as the feed pawl'B is mounted on'the ink-pad "slide the ticket feeder is also retracted. With the ink pad and ticket feeder in retracted position the high rise 32 on cam 23 depresses the printing head through its full stroke to print the ticket. As the printing head rises from printing position the ink pad and ticket feeder again advance to the position shown inFigs. 1, 2 and 8.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims. For example it will be understood that the machine maybe provided with a cutter to sever the foremost ticket from the ticket strip.
