L. G. BUETTNER.
LAGING STUD SET 0R PUNCH. No. 263,110. Patented Aug. 22, 1882'.
FlG.1.,
u I nchs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
LOUIS G. BUETTNER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS;
LACING-STUD SET OR PUNCH.
SPECIFIEZATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 263,110,'dated August 22, 1882.
Application filed July 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS U. BUETTNER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lacing-Stud Sets or Punches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in instruments for affixing eyelet-hooks t0 boots and shoes in which lacing is used, with especial reference to an instrument for which a patent was granted to me January 4, 187 6, and numbered 171,770. In that instrument a pointed punch of the usual construction is used in connection with a lug having a slot passing horizontally from front to rear. A change in the construction of the eyelet-hooks used as above stated necessitates a change in the construction of the punch in order torender the same available in properly securin g the eyelet-hook to the boot or shoe. In the eyelethooks for which the instrument formerly patented to me, as above mentioned, was adapted the hole extended entirely through the shank, while in the present construction of said eyelet-hooks the inner end of such hole is closed.
My present invention consists in makingthe punch, or portion that serves as a punch, with a rounded teat or projection surrounded by an outer rim, which construction serves to spread open the end of the shank of the eyelet-hook and curve over the end thus spread, by which it is more firmly held in the leather and a heater job attained.
Beferrin g to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a pair of pliers to which my invention is k applied. Fig. 2 represents the jaws of the pliers open and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a section of the same with the jaws closed.
Fig. 4 represents in detail the lug that holds the eyelet-hook, and Fig. 5 is a section of my improved punch.
To the upperjaw, A, is a block, D, in the central part of the face of which is a rounded projection or teat, d, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and surrounded by a rim, 6, showing a curved space between the two. The outer edge of the block D outside of the rim 0 is beveled, as shown. The lug 0, attached to the opposite jaw, B, is provided with a slot from front to rear, into which the eyelet-hook is inserted, and is substantially the same as described and shown in the patent above referred to.
In operation, the eyelet-hook being inserted in the slotted lug O and the leather F properly adjusted, the block D is brought down,
'when the projection or teat d forces open the shank of the eyelet-hook, thus spreading the edges, which are turned up in the curved space surrounding the teat and are firmly secured to the leather by the rim 6.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In an instrumentfor affixing eyelet-hooks to boots and shoes, a block or punch, D, constructed with a central teat, d, and a rim, 6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the punch D, constructed as described, of the slotted lug O, attached respectively to the jaws A B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS G. BUETTNER.
