This invention relates to dispensing and more particularly to a dispensing closure for a container such as a bottle, jar, can or carton.
Heretofore various types and forms of dispensing closures have been provided but they have not been entirely satisfactory due to their tendency to leak and the inability to effectually seal the contents of the container against evaporation and exposure to the air which causes loss and deterioration of the contents. Also previous closures of this general type have not been unitary structures but have had various parts which were subject to loss and also these prior closures were difcult to manipulate in opening or closing the container.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a dispensing closure comprising a minimum number of parts which may be easily and economically manufactured and which may be assembled with the container and easily manipulated to provide an effectual fluid tight seal and also be opened to the degree desired for dispensing of the contents.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a dispensing closure which may be fabricated in its entirety and subsequently assembled with the container to provide a unitary structure which cannot thereafter be removed from the container thus preventing loss of the closure or parts and yet being manipulable to perform its intended function.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a dispensing closure which is of relatively small size and attractive in appearance and in which means is provided to facilitate the drainage of uid which has not been dispensed from the closure back into the container, thus preventing waste of the contained material.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

With continued reference to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 1 a container I0 having an elongated neck II provided with screw threads I2 and terminating in a reduced neck portion I3 providing a dispensing opening i4 in the container. Neck II is also provided adjacent the lowermost thread with an annular shoulder I5, the purpose of which will presently appear.
A cup shaped closure I6 is provided for the container I0 and this closure may be conveniently formed of plastic or other suitable material provided on the internal surface thereof with threads designedto mate with the threads I2 on neck II. Closure I6 may also be provided With a dispensing opening Il disposed centrally in the outer end thereof.
In order to seal the dispensing opening I4 in the container ID, there is provided a cup shaped member I8 having an annular recessed flange I9, a reduced cylindrical intermediate portion 20 and an enlarged recessed head or flange 2|. Intermediate portion 26 may be provided with a series of apertures 22 through which the contents of the container I0 may flow when the closure is in open position.
In order to eiectually seal the dispensing opening I4 the head 2l of the cup-like member I8 is provided with a sealing gasket 23 which may be formed of cork, rubber or other desirable material and which may be securely held in place by cement or by being crimped into the annular bead-like portion 2li of the head 2 I.
Cup-like member I 8 may be secured in a recess 25 in closure I6 and may be secured in place, if made of metal, during the molding of the closure IB, or as shown in Fig. 5 may be provided with screw threads 26 on the annular shoulder I9 adapted to mate with threads provided in the closure I6. Member I8 may also be formed of plastic and sealed in place in the closure I6 by use of a hot tool applied to the juncture between the annular shoulder I9 and the interior of closure I6.
It is intended that the closure I6 and its associated parts be permanently assembled with the container I0 permitting only the necessary movement to open and close the closure for dispensing purposes. In order to carry out this intention,
the lower portion of the closure I6 is provided with a skirt 21 extending below the shoulder I5 on neck II of the container Il), there being an annular space 28 between skirt 21 and neck II for reception of a closure retaining member 29. Also in order to conveniently secure the retaining member 29 to the closure I5 the lower edge of skirt 21 is provided with an annular flange 39 on the outside surface thereof.
As best shown in Fig. 4, the retaining member 29 is provided with an annular channel 3I which is adapted to receive the lower edge of skirt 21 there being an upstanding annular flange 32 which may be crimped over the upper surface of flange 30 to secure member 29 in place on closure I6. Also provided on member 29 are an annular series of upstanding spring fingers 33, the internal diameter of the opening formed by upper ends 34 being slightly greater than the external diameter of neck I I but less than the diameter of shoulder I5.
It will thus be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 that in assembling the closure I5 with the neck II of container I9 it is only necessary to engage the threads of closure I5 to move the same downwardly on the neck I I toward the body of the container I0. This movement will result in spring lingers 33 passing over the shoulder I 5 and when the ends 34 of these lingers reach the lower edge of shoulder I5 they will snap inwardly into the annular space 28 beneath the lower surface of shoulder I5, thus effectively preventing upward movement of closure I6 beyond the point of engagement of the upper ends 34 of ngers 33 with the lower surface of the shoulder I5. The fingers 33 are so proportioned that the range of movement is sufficient to permit adequate opening of the dispensing aperture I4 whereby the contents of the container I may be dispensed.
In order to prevent leakage of the contents of the container I0 along the outside surface of reduced neck I3 and around threads I2 to the atmosphere cup-like gasket supporting member I8 is provided with an annular gasket 35 secured in the recess of flange I9 by beading over the edge thereof or by cementing the same in place. The inner annular surface 35 of the gasket 35 is proportioned to provide a tight engagement with the outer surface of reduced neck I3 but this engagement is not sufliciently tight to preclude rotational and sliding movement of the gasket 35 and cup-like member I8 with relation to reduced neck I3.
It will thus be seen that in operation it is only necessary to rotate closure I6 in the proper direction to raise gasket 23 away from the upper surface of reduced neck I3 thereby disposing the apertures 22 in cup-like gasket supporting member I8 slightly above the upper edge of reduced neck I3 as shown in Fig. 2 whereby upon inversion of the container I0 the contents thereof will flow outwardly through apertures 22 around bead 24 and outwardly through dispensing opening I1- As explained above, the outward movement of closure I6 is limited by the engagement of the ends 34 of fingers 33 with the lower surface of shoulder I thereby preventing removal and consequent loss of the closure I6. Upon reverse movement of closure I6 gasket 23 will again seat on the upper edge 0f reduced neck I3 thus effectually sealing in the contents of the container I9.
It is of course understood that the closure of this invention may be made without the skirt 21 and member 29 in order to provide a closure member which may be applied to a container or removed therefrom at will. The elimination of these features in no way effects the sealing properties of the closure and this structure would merely be utilized when a removable cap or closure was desired.
A modified form of the invention is disclosed in Figs. 6 to 9 and in this form the closure I6 is substantially the same as that described above, being provided with screw threads mating with screw threads I2 on the neck I I of the container I0. Closure I6 in this modification is also provided with the annular skirt 21, annular flange 30 and retaining member 29 secured thereto. Also in this modification neck II is provided with annular shoulder I5 beneath which the spring :lingers 33 are disposed to prevent removal of the closure I6.
In accordance with this modification of the invention the upper surface of reduced neck I3 is sealed by a gasket 31 adhesively or otherwise secured in a downwardly opening depressed or recessed portion 38 of a platelike member 39. Member 39 is also provided with an annular series of apertures 43 disposed substantially midway between the periphery 4I thereof and the periphery of depressed portion 33.
In order to seal against leakage along the outer surface of reduced neck I3 there is provided an annular gasket 42, the inner surface of which tightly engages the outer surface of reduced neck I3, gasket 42 being disposed in the annular skirt 43 of a member 44 which is also provided with an outwardly ilared flange 43. Gasket 42 may be secured in place in skirt 43 by beading over the edge 4-1 thereof or may be cemented in place. The upper surface of flange 46 is provided with flutes or corrugations 48 which extend from the outer peripheral edge thereof inwardly to the opening formed by the inner surface of gasket 42, thus forming radial channels the purpose of which will presently appear.
In the operation of this form of the invention it is only necessary to rotate the closure I5 thus raising the gasket 31 away from the upper surface of reduced neck I3 a distance limited by the engagement of the upper edges 34 of spring fingers 33 with the lower surface of annular shoulder I5 whereby upon inversion of the container I9 the contents thereof will flow outwardly through reduced neck I3, apertures 40 in platelike member 39 and through the dispensing opening I1 in the outer end of closure I6.
When the container I3 is returned to upright position this may result in a small quantity of the contents thereof remaining in the space between the upper end of closure I8 and the upper surface of plate-like member 39. If this condition does exist the excess material may flow backwardly through apertures 4D and down the inclined channels formed by flutes or corrugations 4S in member 44 into the interior of container I through the reduced neck l 3Whereupon the closure I6 may be rotated in the reverse direction to reseat the gasket 31 on the upper surface of reduced neck I3 thus effectually resealing the contents of the container. The position of the closure I6 and gasket 31 inY open or dispensing condition is clearly shown in Fig. 7.
It will thus be seen that by this invention there has been provided a simple yet effective dispensing closure which is composed of relatively few parts and which, once it is assembled with the associated container, cannot be removed therefrom, yet is easily manipulable to perform its intended function and which will permit drainage of excess material backwardly into the container and eiectually seal the same against leakage or exposure to the air. This dispensing closure is also of relatively small size and may be given a pleasing appearance harmonizing with the remainder of the container, the manufacture of the device being very economical due tothe fact that the majority of the parts thereof may be molded and that the few assembly operations necessary may be performed by relatively unskilled labor.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a cylindrical neck provided with external screw threads, an outwardly extending annular shoulder on said neck adjacent the lower extremity of said threads and an upwardly extending reduced neck portion providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a cylindrical member having a restricted dispensing aperture centrally located in the upper end of said member and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, a depending cylindrical skirt on said member having an outwardly extending annular flange adjacent the lower end thereof, a closure retaining member secured to said iiange and having a plurality of circumferentially disposed upwardly extending spring fingers positioned within said skirt and below said shoulder whereby upon application of said closure member to said neck said lingers will snap over said shoulder and thereafter prevent removal of said closure member from said neck, sealing means disposed within the upper portion of said closure member and comprising a supporting member, a sealing gasket fixed in said supporting member secured within said closure member and tightly embracing said reduced neck portion whereby rotary and longitudinal movement of said gasket relative to said reduced neck is permitted but leakage thereby is prevented, a second sealing gasket mounted in operative relation with respect to said first mentioned gasket for movement therewith and seating when said closure member is in closed position against the top surface of said reduced neck thereby preventing leakage from said container, and said supporting member having a plurality of apertures therethrough adjacent said gaskets whereby upon movement of said closure member to open position the contents of said container may iiow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member.
2. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, an outwardly extending annular shoulder on said neck and an upwardly extending reduced neck portion providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end of said member and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, a depending cylindrical skirt on said member having an outwardly extending annular iiange adjacent the lower edge thereof, a closure retaining member secured to said iiange and having a plurality of circumferentially disposed upwardly extending spring 1ingers positioned within said skirt and below said shoulder whereby upon application of said closure member to said neck said lingers will snap over said shoulder and thereafter prevent removal of said closure member from said neck, sealing means disposed within the upper portion of said closure member and comprising a supporting member, a sealing gasket fixed in said supporting member secured within said closure member and tightly embracing said reduced neck portion whereby rotary and longitudinal movement of said gasket relative to said reduced neck is permitted but leakage thereby is prevented, a second sealing gasket mounted in operative relation with respect to said mentioned gasket for movement therewith and seating when said c10- sure member is in closed position against the top surface of said reduced neck thereby preventing leakage from said container, and said supporting member having a plurality of apertures therethrough adjacent said gaskets whereby upon movement of said closure member to open position the contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure.
3. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, an outwardly extending annular shoulder on said neck and an upwardly extending reduced neck portion providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end of said member and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, a skirt on said member having an annular fiange thereon, a closure retaining member secured to said flange and having a plurality of upwardly extending fingers positioned within said skirt and below said shoulder whereby upon application of said closure member to said neck said lingers will snap over said shoulder and thereafter prevent removal of said closure member from said neck, sealing means disposed within said closure member and comprising a sealing gasket fixed in said closure member and tightly embracing said reduced neck portion whereby rotary and longitudinal movement of said gasket relative to said reduced neck is permitted but leakage thereby is prevented, a second sealing gasket operatively mounted in operative relation with respect to said first mentioned gasket for movement therewith and seating when said closure member is in closed position against the top surface of said reduced neck thereby preventing leakage from said container, and said sealing means having a plurality of apertures providing communication from one side to the other of said gaskets whereby upon movement of said closure member to open position the contents of said container may iiow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member.
4. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with-screw threads, lashoulder 'on said -neck below said `screw threads, .said neck terminating in an `upwardly extending reduced neck portion providing a-dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising -a 4member Ahaving a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw `threads meshing with the threads on said-neck, means-on the lower-end of said member permitting the initial application of'said member to-said neck lbut thereafter preventing removal .by -engagement with said shoulders, sealing means within said v-member and movable therewith engaging the top -and side surfaces of'saidreduced neck whereby leakage from said container is prevented and said sealing `means having a plurality of apertures through said sealing means outwardly of the top-of the neck-and above the bottom of the sealing means providing communication from one side to the other ofisaid sealingmeans whereby when said vclosure is in yopen position lthe contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said-closure member.
5. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a-closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshingwith the threads on said neck, means-on said member lpermitting the -ini-tial application ofsaid member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said-member and comprising a cup-shaped element having a lower annular recessed ange, the outer wall of said flange being imbedded in the material of said member, a reduced cylindrical intermediate portion and an upper recessed annular fiange, an annular gasket secured in the recess of said lower flange, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, a gasket v secured in the recess of 'said upper flange and adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the top surface of said reduced neck thus sealing in the contents of said container, and said intermediate `portion having a plurality of apertures therein substantially -midway between said upper and lower flanges whereby upon movement of said member tovopen position the Acontents of said Ycontainer may flow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said member.
6. A dispensing container and adjustable closure ktherefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member for permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing meanssecured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a cup-shapedfelement having a lower recessed flange, the outer wall of said lia-nge being imbedded in the material of said member, a reduced intermediate portion and an upper recessed flange, a gasket secured in the recess of said Alower flange, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, a gasket secured inthe recess of fsaid -upper ange and adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the top surface of said reduced neck thus sealing in the 'contents of said container, and said intermediate portion having a plurality of apertures therein substantially midway between said upper and lower flanges whereby upon movement 'of said member to open position the contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the 'dispensing aperture in said member.

A dispensing'container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having `a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof Vand 4internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said `member Ypermitting the initial application of'said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a cup-shaped element having a lower recessed flange secured to said member, a reduced intermediate portion Aand an upper recessed flange, a gasket secured in the recess of said lower flange, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer 'surface of said reduced neck, a gasket secured in the recess of said upper flange and adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the top surface of said reduced neck thus sealing in the contents of said container, and said intermediate portion having a plurality of apertures therein substantially midway between said upper and lower anges whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said member.
8. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, terminating in :an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a cup-shaped element having a lowei` recessed flange secured to said member, a reduced intermediate portion and an upper recessed flange, a gasket secured in the recess of said lower flange, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, a gasket secured in the recess of said upper flange and adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the top surface of said reduced neck thus sealing in the contents of said container, and said intermediate portion having a plurality of apertures therein whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may owthrough said reduced neck, said .apertures and the dispensing aperture in saidmember.
9. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on' said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck, means providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprsing a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a cup-shaped element having means mounted therein tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, a second means secured in said cup-shaped element and adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the top surface of said reduced neck thus sealing the contents of said container, and said cupshaped element having a plurality of apertures providing communication from one side to the other side of said cup-shaped element whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may iiow through said reduced neck, said -apertures and the dispensing aperture in said member.
10. A device as defined in claim in which the outer wall of said lower flange is provided with screw threads meshing with screw threads in the inner wall of said closure member whereby said cup-shaped element is secured therein.
11. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a recessed element having an upper flared iiange, a cylindrical gasket secured in said recess, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, an upper plate-like element having a downwardly opening recess therein, the peripheral edge of said plate-like element together with the peripheral edge of said flared flange being juxtaposed and imbedded in the material of said member, a gasket secured in the recess in said plate-like element, said gasket adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the upper surface of said reduced neck to seal in the contents of said container, and said plate-like element having a plurality of annularly disposed apertures therein substantially midway between the recess therein and the periphery, said flared flange being provided with radially disposed flutes defining channels whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may now through said reduced neck, along said channels through said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member and whereby prior to movement of said closure member to closed position excess material in the top portion of said closure member may drain back into said container through said apertures, along said channels and through said reduced neck.
12. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder 10 on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion kof said member and comprising a recessed element having an upper ange, a gasket secured in said recess, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, an upper platelike element having a recess therein, the peripheral edge of said plate-like element together with the peripheral edge of said flange being juxtaposed and secured to said member, a gasket secured in the recess in said plate-like element, said gasket adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the upper surface of said reduced neck to seal in the contents of said container, in said plate-like element havinga plurality of apertures therein, said flange being provided with radially disposed flutes dening channels whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, along said channels, through said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member and whereby prior to movement of said closure member to closed position excess material in the top portion of said closure member may drain back to said container through said apertures along said channels and through said reduced neck.
13. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said mem-ber permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member and comprising a recessed element having an upper iiange, a gasket secured in said recess, the inner surface of said gasket tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck, an upper platelike element having a recess therein, the peripheral edge of said plate-like element together with the peripheral edge of said flange being juxtaposed and secured to said member, a gasket secured in the recess in said plate-like element, said gasket adapted when said member is in closed position to engage the upper surface of said reduced neck to seal in the contents of said container, said plate-like element having a plurality of apertures therein, whereby upon movement of said member to open position the contents of said container may ow through said reduced neck, through said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member and whereby prior to movement of said closure member to closed position excess material in the top portion of said closure mem-ber may drain back to said container through said apertures and through said reduced neck.
14. A dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, a shoulder on said neck, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck. providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, means on said member permitting the initial application of said member to said neck but thereafter preventing removal, sealing means secured within the upper portion of said member comprising means tightly engaging the outer surface of said reduced neck and a second means adapted when said closure member is in closed position to engage the top sufaee of said reduced neck thus sealing in the contents of said container, and said sealingA means having apertures therein. providing communication from one side to the other side of said sealing means whereby upon movement of said closure member to open position the contents of said container may flow through said reduced neck, through said apertures and the dispensing aperture in said closure member and whereby prior to movement of said closure member to closed position excess material in the top portion of said closure member may drain back into said container through said apertures and through said reduced neck.

A- dispensing container and adjustable closure therefor comprising a container having a neck provided with screw threads, said neck terminating in an upwardly extending reduced neck portion providing a dispensing opening, a closure for said opening comprising a member having a dispensing aperture in the upper end thereof and internal screw threads meshing with the threads on said neck, sealing means within said member and movable therewith engaging the top and side surfaces of said reduced neck whereby leakagefrom said container is prevented, and said sealing means having a plurality of apertures through said sealing means outwardly of the neck toprandabove the bottom of the sealing. means providingv communication from one side to the, other side of said sealing means whereby when said, closure is in open position the contents of said container may flow through said re duced neck, said apertures and the dispensing aperture in. said closure member.
