Description

C. M. ROSE Aug. 26, 1952 HANDBAG Filed D60. 7, 1949 AT'E'GRNEY Patented Aug. 26, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HANDBAG Cecilia M. Rose, Taunton, Mass. Application December '7, 1949, Serial No. 131,590
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to handbags and the like, and has particular reference to a novel construction therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a handbag having pockets which are readily distinguishable by their relative positioning within the handbag, and by descriptive labels.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handbag which is made of a small number of readily cut and assembled parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handbag which combines compactness with exceptionally large capacity.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, and more specifically defined in the claim appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a handbag embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an interior perspective view thereof, the parts being partially separated, and one side being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of one side;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one pocket face; and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a second pocket face.
It has been found desirable to provide a handbag of simple and compact form, which has a series of pockets so positioned that they are readily distinguishable upon insertion of the hand, as well as by designating labels, the pockets being spaced and arranged so that a maximum capacity is available. To this end, I form the pockets to provide vertically spaced openings thereto, whereby each side includes a number of parallel pockets which are relatively vertically displaced, and a substantially large compartment is positioned between the sets of side pockets.
Referring to the drawings, the handbag may be of any size, shape and material, and is illustratively shown as having generally round sides ll, l2, a spacing strip l3, carrying straps l4, l5, and a closure tab it.
The sides I I, I2 are each formed from a blank H, see Fig. 3, which is made of any suitable material, and has an upper portion I8, side edges I9, 20 and a lower edge 2i. A pocket blank 22, see Fig. 4, generally shaped to conform to the shape of the side blank, has an upper edge 23, which may be reinforced and is preferably shirred and includes an elastic, side edges 24, 25 which are sewed to the side edges I9, 20 of the blank l1, and a lower edge 26 which is sewed to the blank I! above the lower edge 2! thereof.
A second pocket blank 21, see Fig. 5, with an upper edge 28, which may be reinforced and is preferably shirred and includes an elastic, side edges 29, 3D, and a lower edge 3|, is superimposed on the first pocket blank with its upper edge 28 spaced below the upper edge 23, its side edges 29, 3D sewed to the side edges 19, 20 of the 2 blank [1, and its lower edge 3! sewed to the lower edge 2| of the blank H.
The other side is also provided with pockets as above described, and the assembly is completed by sewing the spacing strip [3 to the sides, the straps l4 and I being secured to the sides by sewing or in any other suitable manner. The assembly thus includes a central carrying compartment, and pockets at each side which are displaced vertically with respect to each other, with their openings at difierent heights and their bases at different depths.
Each pocket is preferably labelled or tagged, as by designations 32, see Fig. 2, to designate the pockets, whereby the owner keeps the various items in the proper pockets.
I have found that the construction provides maximum carrying capacity and great ease in placing the articles to be carried in the proper pockets. Further, since the lower portions of the pockets are at different heights, the tendency.
to distend the bottom of the handbag as the pockets are filled is overcome. If desired, the number of pockets at each side may be increased, by using additional intermediate pocket blanks. and one or more pocket blanks vertically to each other or to the side to provide narrow pockets.
Although I have described a specific constructional embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that changes in the size, shape, arrangement and material of the parts may be made to suit different handbag requirements, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a handbag construction two sides each having an upper portion, side edges, and a lower edge, and two pockets at each side, the pockets being shaped to conform to the shape of the side, one pocket having an upper edge adjacent the upper portion of the side, side edges sewed to the side edges of the side and a lower edge sewed to the side above the side lower edge, the second pocket being superimposed on the first pocket and having an upper edge spaced below the upper edge of the first pocket, side edges sewed to the side edges of the side and a lower edge sewed to the lower edge of the side, the upper edges of the pockets being shirred and including an elastic, each pocket being labelled by contents designation.
