LIFTER FOR CYLINDER HEADS Filed June 9, 1948 Fred P. Cole I N VENTOR.
Patented Aug. 5, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIFTER FOR CYLINDER HEADS Fred P. Cole, Twin Lake, Mich.
Application June 9, 1948, Serial No. 32,012
1 Claim. 1
the same is attended with considerable difficulty and danger when attempted manually and in the absence of special hoists or the like.
With the foregoing in mind, the principal object of my invention is to provide lifters of simple form and inexpensive construction adapted to be securely attached, easily and quickly, to such heads for use as handles in manually removing and replacing the heads in shops, garages, and the like.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention in a preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of one of the lifters detached and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of a modified embodiment of my invention; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective, partly in section, and illustrating the adapter of the modified embodiment drawn to a larger scale.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, first to Figures 1 and 2 thereof, according to my invention, in the preferred embodiment thereof, a pair of lifters I, in the form of crank handles, are provided for the cylinder head 2, each lifter comprising a bar-like shank 3 with a hand grip 4 extending laterally from one end thereof and the opposite end of the shank 3 being bent at a right angle to form an attaching ear 5 underlying the hand grip 4 and. apertured, as at 6, for bolting to the cylinder head I.
The lifters I are designed to be bolted to the top of the cylinder head 2 at diagonally opposite corners of said head and in upstanding position with the hand grips 4 extending, preferably, over said head. A pair of the usual manifold bolts I may be utilized for bolting the lifters I in place and as shown.
As will now be seen, the pair of lifters I provide handles which may be easily grasped in lifting the cylinder head I, and by having the lifters attached at diagonally opposite corners of said head 2, the head may be carried in substantially balanced condition, rendering carrying easy and safe. Obviously, the lifters I may be turned on the bolts 1 to extend the hand grips 4 outwardly of the cylinder head 2 if that position of the hand grips be found more convenient in lifting and carrying the cylinder head.
In the modified embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 3 and 4, a pair of lifters 8, like the lifters I, are attached in the longitudinal center of the cylinder head 2 in upstanding position with the hand grips 4 preferably turned oppositely crosswise of said head. The attaching ears 5 are supplemented by a pair of adapters, one of which is shown in Figure 4, for attachment to said ears and in the end spark plug holes I0 of the cylinder head 2. Each adapter 9 comprises a cylindrical spacer I I for insertion in the spark plug well I2, said cylinder having a threaded stud I3 on one end thereof for turning into the spark plug hole I 0 and a relatively smaller diameter threaded stud I4 on its opposite end for insertion through the aperture 6 in the attaching ear 5 to receive a nut I5 for clamping said ear to said spacer II.
As will be seen, by attaching the lifters 8, in the manner described, in the longitudinal center of the cylinder head 2, said head may be lifted and carried in substantially balanced position with the lifters 8 providing handles.
In connection with both of the described embodiments of my invention, it is to be noted that the lifters, when attached as described, may be used as stands to support the cylinder head 2 in inverted position on a floor, bench, or the like.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved .to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lifter for attachment to a cylinder head of the type having a sparkplug well with a threaded sparkplug hole in said Well, said lifter comprising a handle having a shank with a bar-like upper end hand grip extending laterally from one side of the shank, said shank having a lower end apertured ear extending laterally from the same side thereof as said hand grip, a cylindrical spacer seating at one end thereof in the well in overlapping relation to said hole and provided 3 4 at said end with a reduced threaded stud for turning into the hole, said spacer being longer REFERENCES CITED than the depth 01 the W811 whereby the other end The following references are of record in the of the spacer extends out of the well, and a refil f this patent;
