Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER E. MGCONNELL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,591, dated July 4, 1882.
' Application filed March 22, 1ss2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. Mo- GONNELL, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of" Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nut-Locks, and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and cor rect description'of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are employed for preventing the unloosening of screw-nuts on threaded bolts; and it consists of two plates constructed and held together in proper positions, as hereinafter fully described. 7
The accompanying drawings show my invention in connection with fish-bars and railroad-rails. It may, however, be used in connection with the bolts used for any other purpose.
0n the drawings, Figure 1 represents the two pieces of the device as when locked together.
The said figure also includes a detached perspective view of the locking-key. Fig. 2 shows two rails connected together by fish-bars and bolts,'and my improvedmeans for preventing the uuloosening of the nuts upon the latter. Fig. 3 shows my device as constructed for securing the nuts of three bolts, and Fig. 4 the said device constructed to hold the nuts of four bolts. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the key or lockin g plate employed in the latter case. 1
The same letters designate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The letter A designates the base-plate of the device. This is provided with one or more openings for the passage of the bolt or bolts, the said opening made by pressing outward a portion of the metal b. This portion, however,
is not entirely-disconnected, but is held by a narrow neck, so that it may be bent over and hold a key.
The key D is formed with one or both ends bifurcated, or so formed as to straddle the cor- 11ers of the nuts and engage the sides thereof. If this portion of the device is to securebut one nut, then its opposite end should be so cut as to rest against a ridge formed on the baseplate, as at c. The bifurcated end of the key, if made single, or one of its ends, if made double, as at Figs. 4 and 5, has a narrow slot, 0, formed in the corner or angle thereof, so it can be slipped into proper position over the neck of the plate, and in which position it is securely held by bending the outwardly-pressed portion over and against the same.
7 To provide for securing single nuts the basev plate is furnished with a ridge, against which one end of the key rests, as before described, and to provide for securing more than one not one or both of theendsof thebase-plate should be bifurcated, as atff.
Instead-of forming the ends of the key to fit two sides of the nuts, as described, the same effect can be obtained by having the ends of saidkeyD so constructed as to fit against one, three, or more sides of the same. In either case the end of the key should be slotted, so as to he slipped over the outwardly-pressed portion of the plate A.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lS
1. In a nut-locking device, a locking-plate holder composed of base plate A, provided with an outwardly-pressed portion, 1), whereby a hole is formed for the passage of the bolt and a means obtained for securing the locking-plate D in position, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The locking-plate holder herein described, composed of base-plate A, provided with ridge 0, and with an outwardly-pressed portion, 11, whereby a hole is formed for the passage of the bolt and a means obtained for securing the locking-plate D in position, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name.
A. E. MOUONNELL.
Witnesses H. P. SUMAN, P. J. FINNEY.
