1 Claim. (Cl. 128-252) This invention relates to bottle feeding of calves.
An object of the present invention is to provide such a nipple that includes means facilitating application of the same on a bottle.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide such means in the form of raised indicia that affords roughening to improve the grip on the nipple during application to or removal from a bottle.
The invention also has for its objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, easily installed in a working position and easily disconnected therefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple, and of general superiority and serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawing merely shows and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawing, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a calfs nipple according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, in quarter section, of said nipple and shown in place on a bottle.
The present nipple is made of rubber or like material and, therefore, is quite slippery to handle when it becomes wet. The nipple is quite large and, although thick-walled, suitably elastic.
The nipple that is shown comprises, generally, a mounting portion 5, a nipple portion 6, and means 7 on the mounting portion constituting roughening facilitating a nipple particularly for the handling of the nipple when wet. Said portions 5 and 6 and the means 7 are integrally molded in the usual way.
As shown, the portion 5 is provided with a seat 8 adapted to receive the open end 9 of a bottle and the same may be formed according to the form of the bottle end. Said seat is defined by a peripheral wall 10 and a transverse end wall 11.
According to the invention, said end wall 11, on its outer face is provided with the means 7. In this instance, said means 7 is shown as arcuately arranged groups of letters and/or words 12 that are raised above the outer face of wall 11, as best seen in Fig. 2. It is preferred that this indicia be raised materially above said surface and that the peripheral walls 13 of the letters or numbers thereof be sharply defined with respect to wall 11. Thus, the means 7 comprises a multiplicity of sharply defined projections that constitute roughening that facilitates application of the nipple to bottle end 9.
While, in practice, it is preferred that the means 7 comprise indicia relating to the name of the manufacturer, his location, trademark, etc., comparable roughening may be provided by sharply defined projections formed differently than letters and numbers.
While I have illustrated and described what I now contemplate to be the best mode of carrying out my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is, therefore, not desired to restrict the invention to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but to cover all modifications that may fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A calfs nipple comprising, in combination: an elastic molded rubber body having a nipple portion; a transverse wall extending normal to said nipple portion; a plurality of arcuately arranged raised portions on the outer surface of said transverse wall, said raised portions being substantially rectangular in longitudinal cross-section; and side walls on said raised portions, said side walls extending parallel to an axis of said nipple portion, thereby sharply to define said raised portion.
