Description

COMBINED DESK AND SEAT Filed Oct. 28, 1950 INVENTOR. BY /4z5/r7/r. [Mada/a ATTORNEY This invention relates generally to furniture and particularly to a combined desk and seat.
The main object of this invention is to so construct the desk that its cost may be reduced to a minimum and that its rigidity may be increased over other forms of this device previously manufactured by the applicant.
The second object is to so construct the device that it can be easily assembled by an inexperienced person without the need of special tools.
The third object is the construction of a form of outrigger hinge which makes it possible for a blackboard to overhang the supporting tray in all directions without danger of injuring the hinges when the board is carelessly operated.
I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the desk.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the desk.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing the hinge construction.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective showing the manner of uniting the rail and leg members.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective showing the manner of attaching the tray to its support.
Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown a central rail 10 having a channel 11 formed in its under side along its full length.
The front end 12 is square while the rear end 13 is inclined from the vertical. To support the rear end of the rail 10 there are provided the rear legs 14 which are gained together at their upper ends through which is formed a bolt hole 15. At the front end of the beam 10 is an X-shaped support consisting of the gained leg members 16 whose gained portions are provided with the bolt holes 17 which register with the channel 11 and hole 15.
The adjacent sides of the legs 14 and 16 are provided with vertical slots 18 to receive the ends 12 and 13 of the rail 10.
A bolt 19 occupies said channel 11 and its threaded ends 20 extend through the holes and 17. A wing nut 21 on each end makes it possible to securely assemble the rail 10 to the legs 14 and 16. A seat 22 is secured ited States Patent 0 to the top of the rear legs 14 by the screws 23 and to the rail 10 by the screw 24.
The upper ends 25 of the legs 16 are inclined downwardly toward the seat 22 to receive the bottom 26 of the tray whose sides 27 and 28 are secured to the bottom 26 and to each other by the ends 29.
On the top of the tray rim formed by the sides 27 and 28 and ends 29 is placed a thin desk top 30 which overhangs the tray on all four sides. The lower or rear side of the top 30 has a rail 31 which is tongue and grooved to the top 30.
The upper or front edge of the top 30 has a similar rail 32. To each end 29 is secured an angular clip 33 by means of the screws 34. The ends 35 are upturned and provided with a screw 36 which is mounted in a rail end 37.
It can be seen by this simple construction there is formed an outboard hinge which will stand much abuse.
It is the purpose of this invention to so construct the desk in a manner which will make its production commercially practical and, at the same time, greatly increase its strength and to expedite the manufacture and erection thereof.
The bottom 26 is secured to the legs 16 by means of the angle clips 38 which are secured to the bottom 26 by the screws 39 and to the legs 16 by the screws 40.
It is, therefore, my intention to cover those improvements in construction which fall fairly within the following claim.
I claim:
In a desk of the class described, a pair of rear legs arranged as an inverted V and gained together at the top thereof, a pair of front legs gained in X fashion, both pair of legs having vertical slots formed on their adjacent sides, a rail having its ends in said slots and having a groove formed along the length thereof, a bolt occupying said groove and extending through the gained portions of said legs, a seat secured to the top of said rear legs and to said rail and a sloping desk top mounted on the upper ends of said X-shaped member.
