Description

Oct. 19, 1954 D. J. BELL SOCK FOR USE BY GOLFERS Filed Sept. 4, 1953 Dorothy J. Bell INVENTOR.
BY My oug .gJ a 4 a Patented Oct. 19, 1 954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,691,779 SOCK FOR USEBY GIOLFERS Dorothy J. Bell, Chickasha, Okla.
Application September 4, 1953, Serial No. 378,472
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to a novelly constructed and performing sock which is especially, though not necessarily, adapted to be worn by a golfer, particularly a woman golfer, said sock being thought to be novel in that it is provided with facilities for carrying golf tees in a practical ready-to-use manner.
It is a matter of common knowledge that the average woman golfer aspiring to play golf will be wearing apparel affording little pocket space and, under the circumstances, extra provisions will have to be made for handily carrying and supplying golf tees. Confronted with this problem a practical solution thereof has been found wherein the needed and effectual golf tee holding and carrying means is incorporated in a specially constructed sock, one which may be satisfactorily worn in conjunction with conventional-type of golf shoes.
Briefly summarized the invention therefore has to do with a sock which is expressly designed and adapted to be worn by a golfer comprising a closefitting covering for the foot including heel and toe portions and an angle portion which is adapted to extend at least to the top of a golf shoe when in use, said angle portion having means thereon to accommodate and retain golf tees in a readily accessible position for use.
Further novelty is predicated on the stated golf tee accommodating and retaining means which is preferably in the form of a cuff, the latter being being made up of at least one preferably two, complemental down-turned flaps, at least one of the flaps being provided on its exterior side with a fabric or equivalent strip which is stitched transversely at longitudinally spaced points to define loop-like pockets for reception and retention of the readily insertible and removable golf tees.
Other objects, features, and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawing.
In the drawing wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts, throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a golfers sock constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and showing the manner in which the tees are accommodated for retention and use;
Figure 2 is a top-plan view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings with the aid of reference numerals and lead lines, it will be seen that the sock is designed for the woman golfer in the belief that she will find these socks very helpful and convenient in carrying golf tees, especially when her apparel or attire is without golfcarrying facilities. Each sock is the same in construction and a description of one will sufiice for both. Each seek is made of appropriate material and is proportioned and designed so that the ankle portion cooperates with the upper edge of the conventional type golf shoe. The sock proper is denoted by the numeral 4 and it is characterized by a foot covering including a toe portion 6 and a heel portion it. The upper opening of the sock may be referred to conveniently as the ankle portion ill and this is provided with the golf tee accommodating and carrying means. Generally stated the means may be treated either as a cuff or a collar which is down-turned and cooperates with and overhangs the top edges of the golf shoe in an obvious and practical manner. The cuff comprises a pair of accurately shaped flaps l2 and it. These flaps are identical in general appearance in that each one may be said to be generally rectangular in form and joined to the ankle portion by way of a fold l t. The lower edge portion is denoted at it. The transverse forward and rearward ends 2ll20 and 22-42 respectively are spaced apart to form V-shaped openings or crotch portions 2424 which facilitate proper fitting of the sock without restraint or undue binding as might be the case if the flange were endless. On the other hand it is within the purview of the invention to use an endless flange and to make it of slightly elastic material to accommodate the wearer. The golf tee holding means is on at least one of the flanges. The means is made up of a plurality of pockets and specifically it comprises a strip of fabric or strip material of an appropriate kind which is superimposed against the intermediate portion of the exterior side of the fiap between the fold and lower edge, the same being transversely stitched at 26 with the stitchings disposed at longitudinally spaced points and defining loop-like pockets or holders 28 for the golf tees A.
When the sock is in use the flaps overhan the cooperating edge portions of the golf shoe and therefore constitute satisfactory and apt means to successfully accommodate and retain the golf tees in readily accessible position.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readilyunderstood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling Within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
As a new article of manufacture, a sock which is expressly designed and adapted to be worn by a golfer comprisin a close fitting covering for the foot including heel and toe portions and an ankle portion which is adapted to extend at least to the top of a golf shoe when in use, said ankle portion having a pair of substantially rectangular flaps joined to the upper edges of said ankle portion by folds and bein directed downwardly and adapted to overhang adjacent portions of the shoe, and a strip of material superimposed upon at least one of said flaps and stitched thereto by transverse longitudinally spaced rows of stitchings and defining loop-like tee receiving and retaining pockets, said strip extending horizontally and being situated midway between the adjacent fold and lower longitudinal edge of said one flap.
