The present invention relates to a diaper construction and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.

Generally there is provided a diaper construction which includes a substantially rectangular backing sheet of cotton or other suitable fabric atop which is centrally aiiixed a liner sheet of rubber or the like, the latter being provided with flap portions which are adapted to overlap a centrally located depressed portion in which may be placed a removably mounted pad of sponge rubber or like material. The pad itself is provided with a pair of recesses one of which is adapted to adjoin the anus of an infant while the other recess is adapted to adjoin the infants urinal organ. One of the features of the invention is the provision of registering openings in certain of the aforementioned flaps which register not only one with another but with the recesses in the pad.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel diaper construction including a reusable absorbent pad forming a part of such invention.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in constructions, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.

A further object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel flaps having registering openings forming a part of the invention.

Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:

Figure l is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention;

Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 but show ing the same in partly folded condition;

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figures 1 and 2 but showing the device in fully folded condition;

Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional View taken substantially along line l l of Figure 1; and

Figure 5 is an enlarged side elevational view of an absorbent pad forming a part of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a substantially rectangular backing sheet It preferably formed of cotton fabric or similar material provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending recess l I in which is afiixed as by gluing, indicated at l2, the central portion I3 of a liner member generally indicated at I4.

Since the liner member I4 follows the contour of the member I2, it is likewise provided with the centrally disposed longitudinally extending recess I5 in which is adapted to be removably mounted an elongated absorbent pad I6 preferably formed of sponge rubber or like material and provided with a relatively large recess ll adjacent one end thereof and a relatively small recess It adjacent the other end thereof.

Referring more particularly to the liner member I 4, it will be seen that the same is provided, in addition to the recessed portion I5, with side flaps I9 and 29 and end flaps 2| and 22. The flaps l9 and 29 are provided with relatively large openings 23 and 24, respectively, which, when overlapped in the manner shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, are adapted to register with one another and with the recess I1. The flaps I 9 and 28 are likewise respectively provided with relatively small openings 25 and 26 which are adapted to register with one another and with the recess I8 when placed in overlapping condition as aforesaid.

In operation, it will be apparent that with the device in fully opened condition as shown in Figure 1, the pad I6 is placed in the recess I5 whereupon the end flaps 2| and 22 are folded thereover as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings after which the side flap 2!] is folded over the pad I5 and then the flap I9 is folded thereover as shown in Fig. 3. It will now be seen that the openings 23 and 2d are in registry with the recess !1 in the pad I 6 while the openings 25 and 26 are in registry with the recess IS in the pad IS. The device may then be placed upon the body of an infant in such manner that the recess !8 is adjacent the anus of such infant while the recess I l is adjacent the urinal organ of such infant and that access to the recesses I? and I5 is provided through the registering openings aforesaid so that excrement or urine may be passed by such infant and immediately and readily absorbed by the pad it which thereafter may be replaced or first Washed and dried and then replaced in the recess I 5 as above described.

While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a; backing sheet of fabric, a liner sheet of waterproof material afiixed in its central portion to said backing sheet, said central portions of said liner and said backing sheet being depressed to form a central recessed portion, an absorbent pad removably mounted in said recess, said pad having a pair of recesses in the upper face thereof, a pair of elongated side flaps formed integrally with said liner and adapted to overlap the central recessed portion and each having a pair of openings therein adapted to register with the recesses in said pad.

2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said 10 pad is formed of sponge rubber.

4 3. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said pad is formed of a washable absorbent material.

4. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said liner is provided with a pair of relatively short end flaps each adapted to overlie one end of said pad.
