Description
U ITED STATES ATENT FFICE...
JOHN smuAMon, on osWEeo, NEW YORK.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,833, dated December 121, 1882,
' Application filed September 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN SINNAMON, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Immcnts in Straw and Other Light Fuel Burning Stoves, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to utilize straw and other light combustibles as fuel in heating and cook stoves; and to that end it consists in the novel combination and arrangement, with the interior of the stove, of certain devices for retarding the escape of the products of combustion, so as toallow them sufficient time to become perfectly consumed, and also for commingling with said products of combustion the requisite amount ofair to facilitate thecmnbustion of the fuel, all as here inafter m orefully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side and front views, respectively, of my improved straw-burning stove. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on line w x, and Fig. 4. is a top view of the same.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in all figures. p
D represents the outer case or shell of the stove, formed of cast-iron or sheet-iron,as may be desired, and preferably of rectangular form. Said case is provided on the bottom of one of its ends (which may be considered the front of the stove) with a fire-grate, a, and a subjacent ash-pan, H. Over the grate a is the fire-box A, and above the latter is an oven. G, extending from the front end of the case D rearward and forming the top of the fire-box, and a tortuous flue, B, around its bottom, up its rear end, and back over its top to the exit E, as best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. At the rear end of the gratea hollow bridge, 0, is extended across the case D and open at one or both ends, a damper, F, being arranged on the outside of the'case to regulate the ingress of air to the said bridge. The rear wall of the bridge U is perforated to admit air to the flue B immediately back of the fire-box, and thus promote combustion of the partly-consumed fuel which may escape from the fire-box over the bridge. Back of the bridge 0 an inverted bridge, 0, depends from the bottom of the oven G and serves to deflect to the bottom of the case D the products of combustion, and thus retard the same and bring them more intimatelyin contact with the air entering through the perforated wall of the bridge O. The pendent bridge 0 is likewise hollow to allow the air to circulate through it, and thus protectit against excessive heat.
Dampers F are arranged over the ends of the bridge 0 to control the passage of air through it. Said bridge also serves as a radiator of heat, which issues from the same when the damper F is removed from the end of the bridge. I
A door, I, is provided on the bottom of the rear end of the case D, to admit of removing the ashes, which become deposited on the bottom of the case back of the bridges U G.
Havingdescribed myinvention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combinatiom with the fire-box A and fine B, of the hollow bridge 0, rising from the bottom of the line at itsjunction with the lirebox, and having perforations in its rear Side, and the hollow inverted bridge 0, pendent from the top of the flue, both of said bridges being extended across the flue to deflect the products of combustion, and having open ends provided with dampers, substantially as de' scribed and shown.
2. The combination and arrangement, with the case I), of the oven G, extended from one end of said case part way toward the opposite end thereof, and forming the top of the tirebox, and the flue B around its rear end and over its top, and the hollow bridge 0, rising from the bottom of the case, and inverted bridge (1, pendent from the bottom of the oven, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 19th'day of August, 1882.
JOHN SINNAMON. [L. s]
Witnesses: WM. 0. RAYMOND, F. H. GIBBS.
