9 Claims. (01. 248-27 The present invention relates to a mounting device and it particularly relates to a mounting device for clock mechanisms and other timers on panel boards.
It is frequently desirable where large openings have been cut into panel parts to provide mountings, which will permit a timer clock or other meter unit to be placed securely thereon.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a novel mounting of the character described which may be quite broadly applied in connection with meter units, clocks and particularly timers, and which may be readily employed with a minimum of adjustment and manipulation securely to mount such units upon relatively wide openings in panel or meter parts.
Another object is to provide a panel assembly for a meter unit, and particularly for a timer unit, which may be readily manufactured out of stamped parts and Widely utilized for mounting timers upon panel boards.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention. 1
In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory, according to the present invention, to provide the meter unit or timer device with a relatively short, cylindrical casing having recessed, spaced, threaded openings at the forepart thereof to receive mounting screws.
To assemble this meter unit to a panel part, it is most satisfactory to use dished front and back mounting plates, the edges of which will be clamped to the periphery of an opening in the panel board by said screws. The opening will only provide for the passage of the central actuating shaft upon which an actuating handle may be placed.
The handle preferably should conceal the screw mountings. The outside or face disc not only should assist the mounting on the panel board but also should provide a suitable graduated dial face for the meter unit in cooperation with the actuating member.
In the desired form, the opening in the panel part is slotted or notched to cooperate with a projecting lug in the back mounting plate or disc and to fix the position of the unit and prevent turning thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a portion of a panel board with the timer mechanism mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view with the mounting in transverse vertical section taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a separated or exploded perspective 1 view of the various units making up the mounting assembly of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view upon an enlarged scale as compared to Fig. 2, showing the connection between the actuating handle and the main central actuating rod or shaft.
Referring to Fig. 3, there is shown: (a) a handle or actuating member A; (b) a front or face dial plate member B; (c) a panel board C; (d) a rear or back mounting dished plate D, and (e) a timer unit E.
The handle A has a curved base it with thin edges II and a vertical finger-grip member 12. The member I2 has ridges l3.
The member I2 has the blunt edge it and the curved edge IS. A central metal band is acts as a reinforcement. The interior or bottom of the base It of the handle A has the circular grooves l1 and 18. The base it also has the projecting portion [9 with the circular contact 20.
The central opening 2| in the handle A is of square cross section to receive the square shank 22 of the shaft 23. The end of the square shank 22 has a circular portion 25 (Fig. 3) and a groove 26 (see Figs. 2 and. l). The groove 26 receives the split ring 21. The split ring 21 is designed to hold the handle A in position.
The plate B consists of a graduated dial 3%. The plate B has inturned edges 3! to contact the panel board 0. The dial face 30 itself is contacted by the ridges 20 of the handle A. The ridge 20 acts as a bearing against the face 39 of the dial B.
The dial B in the form shown preferably has a black band 32 with the brightmetal portions 3 33 and 34. On the peripheral portion at of the bright metal are the graduations 35, preferably in black. The central bright white metal portion of the dial B carries the opening 38 and the two vertical recessed or bevelled openings 37 for receiving the screws 38.
The heads of the screws 38 normally are concealed by the handle A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The panel board C may be made of metal, plastic, wood, stone or various compositions. The board C has an opening 45 with a key opening or slot 46 to mount the unit.
The back plate or disc D has a clamping rim All with a stamped projection 48 to cooperate with the slot 46 in the opening 45 in the panel board C. The plate D also has two openings 59 to match the openings 3'! in the face dial B. The openings 59 receive the shanks of the screws 39 as shown in Fig. 2. The central opening 50 in the plate D is for the shaft 23.
The face plate 65 of the unit E is indented at 55 around the shaft 23 and is also depressed at 56 around the tapped openings for receiving the ends of the screws 38. The unit is provided with a cylindrical side wall 58 and the insulating back plate 59 which carries the connections 68 and 6! for an external electrical circuit.
In assembly, the unit E is assembled with the plate D. The plate D is then placed on the panel C with the slot 46 registering with the projection 48 and with the holes :9 registering with the holes 57. Then the front plate B is assembled therewith with the holes 3'! registering with the holes 59 and 57. The screws 38 are then screwed into position to hold the unit in place.
The handle A or pointer may then be readily slipped onto the portion 22 of the shaft 23, where it will be held frictionally by the split ring 21.
To disassemble or dismantle, the screws 33 may be removed after the handle A has been pulled off of the shaft 22.
It is thus apparent that the present applicant has provided a simple, readily manufactured, inexpensive, durable mounting unit which may be widely employed in mounting clocks, meters and timing units upon panel boards.
Although the dimensions may be widely vaned, the present mounting is particularly useful with timers of about 2.175 in diameter and 1 in depth.
While there has been herein described a preferred form of the invention, it should be understood that the same may be altered in details and in relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:
l. A mounting for a timer having a cylindrical body on a panel board comprising a backing disc and a face disc, and screws to clamp said discs closely together on said panel board and to said timer, said panel board being provided with an opening which is substantially greater in diameter than said timer and the front of said timer having spaced diametrically opposite screw sockets and said backing disc and face disc having openings to receive said screws aligned with said screw sockets and said screws extending through said openings and into said sockets.
2. A mounting for a timer having a cylindrical body on a panel board comprising a backing disc and a. face disc, and screws to clamp said discs closely together on said panel board and to said timer, said panel board having a relatively wide opening and said discs clamping the periphery of said opening, said panel board being provided with an opening which is substantially greater in diameter than said timer and the front of said timer having spaced diametrically opposite screw sockets and said backing disc and face disc having openings to receive said screws aligned with said screw sockets and said screws extending through said openings and into said sockets.

A mounting for a timer having a cylindrical body on a panel board comprising a backing disc and a face disc, and screws to clamp said discs closely together on said panel board and to said timer, said panel board having a relatively wide opening and said discs clamping the periphery of said opening, said backing disc having a circular embossed portion fitting into said opening, said panel board being provided with an opening which is substantially greater in diameter than said timer and the front of said timer having spaced diametrically opposite screw sockets and said backing disc and face disc having openings to receive said screws aligned with said screw sockets and said screws extending through said openings and into said sockets.

A mounting for a timer having a cylindrical body on a panel board comprising a backing disc and a face disc, and screws to clamp said discs closely together on said panel board and to said timer, both of said discs being dished outwardly, said panel board being provided with an opening which is substantially greater in diameter than said timer and the front of said timer having spaced diametrically opposite screw sockets and said backing disc and face disc having openings to receive said screws aligned with said screw sockets and said screws extending through said openings and. into said sockets.

A mounting for a timer on a panel board comprising a backing disc and a face disc, and means to clamp said discs together on said panel board and to said timer, said means including screws extending through said discs and into said timer, said backing disc, face disc and the front of said timer being positioned closely together in parallel relationship and said panel having a key opening cooperating with a key lug in said backing disc to fix the position of said backing disc.

A mounting system for mounting timers having a forwardly projecting shaft upon panel boards having a circular opening with a slot therein comprising a flat plate carrying a dial, a back plate having a lug fitting into said slot carrying the timer body, said fiat plate and said back plate having central openings, said shaft projecting forwardly through said circular opening and through central openings in said plates.
5. A mounting system for mounting timers having a forwardly projecting shaft upon panel boards having a circular opening with a key slot therein comprising a flat plate carrying a dial, a back plate having a lug fitting into said slot carrying the timer body, said fiat plate and said back plate having central openings, said shaft projecting forwardly through said circular opening and through central openings in said plates, said plates and timer receiving clamping screws extending through said circular opening and clamping said plates together and to said timer upon said circular opening.

A mounting for a cylindrical timer body on a panel board having a large circular opening larger than the diameter of said timer body and having a square-shaped notch at the top of the opening, said timer body having a forwardly projecting shaft, said mounting having front and back plates both screwed together and also screwed to said timer body and said front and back plates having dished recesses aligned to receive attachment screws and the peripheral edges of said plates clamping the edge of said circular opening and the end of said shaft receiving a handle covering the central portion of said front and back plates and the screws mounted therein.

The mounting of claim 8, said back plate having a circular shoulder closely fitting into said circular opening and having a notch fitting into said square notch and said front plate having a peripheral dished edge portion contacting the edge of said opening slightly outside and away from the edge of said opening.
