This invention relates to an assembly for strengthening newly formed Wet delicate paper webs so that the same can be handled without damage.
Specifically the invention deals with a suction drum arrangement for cylinder type paper making machines wherein the pick-up felt of the machine is extended longitudinally beyond the last cylinder mold and has a suction press positioned to act on the run of the pick-up felt between this last cylinder mold and the point where the felt is turned.
This invention will be hereinafter specifically described as embodied in a suction drum arrangement for cylinder type paper making machines, but is not limited to such a preferred embodiment. For example, the forming part of the machine can be Widely varied without departing from the principles of this invention.
According to this invention the pick-up felt of a a cylinder type paper making machine is extended in the machine direction so as to have a horizontal run beyond the last cylinder mold. The felt is trained around a turning roll at the end of this run and passes upwardly around a suction drum to extend therefrom in a horizontal direction above the machine. A feature of this invention resides in the provision of a primary suction drum press to act on a pick-up felt along the horizontal run thereof beyond the last cylinder mold. This primary suction drum press extracts sufficient moisture from the web on the pick-up felt so that the web is considerably strengthened and can be directed around a turning roll without damage. The web is preferably covered with a covering felt also trained through the pri mary suction drum press and around the suction roll that is positioned above the turning roll. The covering felt continues with the web along the run of the pick-up felt above the machine. A suction transfer roll is provided at the point of separation of the covering felt and pick-up felt to maintain the web on the pick-up felt.
It is, then, an object of this invention to provide a paper making machine with a primary suction drum press to act on the freshly made fragile paper web before the direction of travel of the web is changed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paper making machine with a primary suction drum assembly acting on the freshly made paper web immediately after the web leaves the forming surface and before it is subjected to a change in direction of travel.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a cylinder type paper making machine with an extended pick-up felt run beyond the last cylinder mold, and to interpose a primary suction drum press along this run of the felt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pick-up felt arrangement for paper making machines with a plurality of suction presses so arranged as to strengthen the web on the felt without damage to enable the web to be handled at high speeds.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pick-up felt arrangement with a covering felt and suction rolls to strengthen the web of paper conveyed by the felts while it is between the pick-up felt and the covering felt.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description of the annexed sheet of drawings which, by way of a preferred example only, illustrates one embodiment of the invention.
On the drawing the figure is a fragmentary diagrammatic elevational View of a cylinder type paper making machine equipped with a primary suction drum assembly according to this invention.
As shown on the drawing, the reference numeral I0 designates a cylinder type paper making machine having a plurality of cylinder vats ll each containing a cylinder mold I2. A. couch roll l3 coacts with each cylinder mold I2. A pick-up felt H has a lower horizontal run over the tops of the cylinder molds I2 and through the nips between the cylinder molds and their coacting couch rolls l3. A pick-up felt I4 thus receives, on its under face, a web from each cylinder mold l2, and the composite Web W produced by the machine is carried on the under face of the felt I4.
The bottom horizontal run of the pick-up felt [4 extends horizontally beyond the last cylinder vat I I to a turning roll I5. The turning roll receives the felt around the under face thereof and provides an extended horizontal run for the felt and Web beyond the last cylinder vat. A suction press [6 is provided to act on this extended run of the pick-up felt I4. The press H5 includes a plain top press r011 I1 and a suction roll l8 in pressure nip relationship therewith. The suction roll l8 has a suction area I9 extending into the nip from a point in advance of the nip.
The pick-up felt l4 extends upwardly around the turning roll [5 to a suction drum 20 and passes around this drum over the suction area 2| thereof and under a cooperating top press roll 22. A second suction press 23 is thus provided by the rolls 20 and 22. Having thus made a and 21 can functi'onmerely as guide rolls.
The third suction press 25 includes a bottom suction roll 28 and a coacting plain top press roll 29. The suction area 30 of the press 25 extends. from the nip of the press to a point, forward of the nip.

A covering felt 32 is provided'to covertheweb' W as it passes through all three presses I5, 23, and 25. The felt 32 is endless, and a turning roll 33.- in the: loop thereof directs the feltonto the suction roll l8 of the firstsuction press. The. felt 32 thus covers the webW as it passes through the. nip of the first suction press,. andtheweb, between the pick-up felt v and the covering. felt 32, then extends around the turningroll. l and through the nip of the second suctionpress. 2-3. After leaving. the second suction press 23, the web,- while still between the two felts. [-4 and 32., passes through the nip of the plain press 24 and through the'nip of the third suction press 25. After passage through the nipof the third suction press a turning roll 34 also within the loop of the felt 32 directs the felt upwardly away'from thepick-up felt. I 4. The suction area of the third press 25. is effective to retain the web on. the pick-up felt so that the covering felt 32 is separated from the web. An inside guideroll 35 directs-the felt 32 from the turning roll 34 along. a horizontal run above the presses 24 and 25 to a tensioning roll 36 which coacts with an external roll 3 in maintaining the felt 32 in a taut condition. The felt travels from the external roll 31. to an internal turning roll 38. and travels downwardly. therefrom over a guide roll as which holds this run. of the felt outwardly from the upwardlrun of they picls-up felt. A beater t0 acts onthe covering felt 32 as it passesbetween the-guide roll 38 anda:turning roll 41-. The felt travels. from. the turning roll 41- over. guide rolls 4-2 and G3 in ahorizontal direction beneath the first suctionpress 3..
The first or primary suction drum: assembly press IB- sufficiently dew-atersthe fragile'f-reshly formed composite web W so that it can betur-ned around the turning roll l5 without damage. The press l6 acts on the web before the web: issubjected to' any change in direction. of travel. It removes a relatively high percentage of Water from the paper, andthe paper, with. its reduced water content, is sufficiently strengthened. so that the change in direction can be made-more easily and safely. Only ahalf of the. direction change occurs before the web is subjected. to-its second dewatering treatment by the press 23. The second half of the changeof direction takes place as the web passes through this second press23.
From the abovedescription it will be: understood that this invention provides an assembly which efiiciently dewaters. freshly' made fragile paper webs before these Webs are subjected to stresses. The dewatering sufficiently strengthens the webs so that they can thereafter be subjected to stresses such as occur when their direction of travel is changed.
It will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and it is, therefore, not the purpose to: limit the. patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A. cylinder type paper making machine comprising a cylinder mold web forming section, a. pick-sup felt trained over said section and having a lower horizontal pick-up run and an upper horizontal return run, a turning roll at the end of said lower runspaced longitudinally from the endofthe' forming section to provide a lower run portion beyond the forming section, a suction press assembly having a suction roll receiving therearound the. pick-up. felt from. said turning roll to complete the change of direction oftravel of. the felt between the lower and upper runs, a second suction press having a suction roll. and receiving said upper run of the pick-up felt therethrough, the suction roll of said secondsuction press contacting said. pick-up felt, a primary suction pressbetween said. forming section and said turning r-oll, said. primary suctionpress having. a suction roll, and. a covering felt trained through all three of said suctionpresses for covering the web on the pick-up felt continuously from the time it enters thenipof the primary suction press until it leavesthe nip of thesecond suction press, said primary suction press receiving the extended lower run of the pick-up felt therethrough, the suction rollof said primary suction press contacting the covering felt.
2. In a cylinder type paper making machine wherein a webis deposited from a cylinder mold directly upona pick-up felt and transported about substantially a turn in two stages and in contiguous relation with a covering felt and the pick-up felt, the combination of: a primary suction press ahead of the turn arranged to exert its suction. on the covering felt to tend to pull the web from the pick-up felt toward the covering felt, and asecond suction press beyond. the turnarranged to exert its suction on the pick-up felt to tend topull the web from the covering felt toward. the pick-up felt.
3. In a cylinder type paper making machine wherein a web is deposited from a cylinder mold directly upon a pick-up felt and transported about a turn incontiguous relation with a covering. felt and thepick-up felt, the combination of a primary suction press ahead of the turn, said. primary suction press having a. suction element on. the side of the; web which is contiguous with the ccvernig felt, and a second suction. press beyond the turn, said second suction press having a suction element on that side of the web which is contiguous with the pick-up felt, said suction elements being in direct contact with the felts respectively.
4. In a cylinder type paper making machine wherein awebisdeposited from a cylinder mold directly upon a pick-up felt and transported beyond said cylinder mold in contiguous relation with said pick-up=felt,. the combination comprising a plurality of; suction. presses arranged respectively. to receive and operate upon the web while onsaid' pick-up felt at substantially spaced stations beyond the cylinder mold, each of said suction presses having a suction element and a press roll between which said pick-up felt and web pass, a covering felt mounted to travel in contiguous relation with the web on said pick-up felt through said plurality of suction presses, the suction element on the one of said presses nearest said cylinder mold being on the covering felt side of said Web, and the suction element of another of said presses being on the pick-up felt side of said web, whereby the suction presses press the felts together and apply unidirectional suction thereto first toward the covering felt side and subsequently toward the pick-up felt side without separating either felt from the intervening web.
